My family and I frequent cafe rio often, we love the food however service recently has taken a turn downhill. We ordered online from the layton location and when the order was brought back home we realized several of the salads were wrong.

Specifically I had ordered a veggie salad with no cilantro. The salad I got had cilantro on it and was missing the pico, tortilla strips, and only had one scoop of guac (the veggie salad typically comes with two scoops). I had also specifically ordered the tortilla with melted cheese to help the tortilla from getting soggy. The salad however came with the cheese on top of the rice and beans not protecting the tortilla from getting soggy at all. We also had orders 2 large tortillas on the side and instead they swapped them and gave us 4 small tortillas. We specifically wanted the large tortillas.

Where they redeemed themselves was when we called the general cafe rio number and they gave us a credit to go back and get it fixed. We returned to the store and without telling any of the employees what had happened and why we were back we ordered, this time in person. I was amazed to see the difference in ordering in person vs online. In person they made it correctly and I had no issues (I never told any of the employees in person I was coming back to get it fixed from their original mistakes). But also the amount of lettuce between the two salads amazed me. The salad I ordered online (pictured on the left in the photos) was skimpy and kinda sad looking. The salad I ordered in person (pictured on the right) was what I remember as a typical cafe rio salad.

Ultimately I do love cafe rio and would return. However maybe not to that location AND I recommend ordering in person and not online, I frequently have issues when ordering online. They did fix their mistakes and I greatly appreciate it. I hope in the future they train their staff better on online orders so they can give customers an equally good experience whether in person or online.

The food always hits. But I don’t think I’ve ever been to a café Rio more chaotic, chickens running with there heads cut off-esque, ever. There was some 30 year old working the take out line that I swear her diet consist of red and blue crayons.

Again, the food is always good, I just didn’t appreciate the extra hour and a half that I had to wait for it (2nd time now).

Recommend avoiding on the weekends.

I come here often and order the same thing. I’ve never encountered an employee who isn’t kind, patient, and giving great service. We got take out here on Christmas Eve and for some reason, my rice tasted horrible. My husband got the same rice and his was fine but he tried mine too and it was bad, I couldn’t even eat it. It’s hard to explain but it was mushy and super salty. I love this place so I called and asked if I could have my food remade. They put me on hold and got a manager. When they came back on the line, they told me to come in and get a new salad. I came in and they had already told the employees so they were expecting me. They told me the batch of rice they used is still the same so I opted for no rice. All of the employees were so kind and accommodating. They apologized many times and got me a new salad quickly. Mistakes happen and that’s just a part of life but they did a great job making it right and I’ll keep coming back here.

This was my first time ordering and picking up from this restaurant. They were efficient in getting me my food on time. The customer service was excellent. The restaurant was nice and clean. The food was great except they gave me a flour tortilla that was hard. Glad I ordered an extra one! But they had to have known it was hard when they packaged it up with my soup. I will eat here again, though!

Lucky I give it two stars, the only person that was kind and helpful was the guy at the very beginning asking what we wanted, after that the woman topping our salads barely spoke loud enough for anyone to hear her. Got frustrated with my grandma that she couldn’t hear her. The boy running the register could care less to help customers and looked upset when he had to put together our chips and queso. Bathroom is disgusting looks almost never cleaned. The fan in the men’s one is very broken and makes and horrid sound and is covered in disgusting dust and grime. The soda machine is not wiped down and had ice completely filling the drain on it, as well as no ice coming out. Over all just not a good cafe rio experience wouldn’t eat at this location again

Deleted my old review to revise this current menu change. Like most places lately, Cafe Rio has made an adjustment to their menu that’s quite disappointing. First off is a general price increase with no real additions or betterment of the food to justify it. Overall food quality is still fine but the taste is off especially with a revised line of sauces that are mediocre at best. The old habanero sauce has been replaced with something quite gross and even if i wanted it, it’s not available to order through the app, requiring you to go inside. This sadly makes it so my go-to order isn’t really available anymore, hense why I hardly go now. Every trip is becoming more depressing than the last with iffy quality and ingredients. Service is still fantastic but if the menu no longer has anything I’m interested in I just don’t really bother anymore. I hope to be able to come back and devour burritos like I used to.

Loving coming here! This cafe Rio location is always clean with many seating areas inside or outside! The employees were welcoming and quick to serve! I got the sweet pork salad topped with Mexican corn and my husband got a steak bowl! Ingredients always taste fresh and delicious!

UPDATED REVIEW 6/16/2024:

We decided to get Cafe Rio for dinner today since it’s Father’s Day and we didn’t want to cook.

We aren’t happy with the new ordering system. If you order a salad, it doesn’t come with everything on it. You have to pick and choose what goes on it and you’re out of luck if you don’t remember what goes on a standard Cafe Rio salad.

We always order extra meat and they never give us extra meat. This time it seemed like they actually gave us less meat and the portions are getting so small. I remember back in the day when the salads would fill the lid and we’d actually get good thick slices of lime and a heaping scoop of guacamole. The salads are so small now that they could use a flat lid for the to-go containers instead of the tall lids.

I will say that tried a bowl and I really liked it. I ordered the Chicken & Elotes and I was very unimpressed with the size when I first saw it, but I ended up feeling full after eating only half of it. The flavor was on point and I think I’d order another one in the future.

Flavor is still good, but I’m not happy with the portion sizes getting smaller. It’s frustrating.

UPDATED REVIEW 12/24/2023:

I haven’t been impressed with this location lately.

We called Cafe Rio on Christmas Eve to see what time they closed. They said 8:00pm, so we made sure to put in our order at least an hour before closing (6:55pm). Our order was supposed to be ready at 7:10, but it wasn’t ready until 7:27. We stood there for at least 15 minutes before someone even spoke to us. I’m not sure why our order was so late because they weren’t very busy.

Right after we walked in at 7:10, one of the employees locked the main doors and then put a note on the other door that said “we are closed because it is 24. No enter.” A few people walked in right after he put up the sign (which he shouldn’t have put up yet) and he got mad at them and kicked them out. Another employee spoke to him in Spanish and told him he shouldn’t do that because of the cameras. He didn’t seem to care though.

The food and service at this location has definitely gone downhill.

ORIGINAL REVIEW 2021:

Delicious! We had this for our Christmas Eve dinner. I had the sweet pork quesadilla on a wheat tortilla, my boyfriend had the sweet pork burrito smothered in sauce (with habanero sauce on the side), my oldest had the chicken salad, and my youngest had the chicken quesadilla.

All of us loved our food. I usually always get the red sauce (hot), but I think I’m going to get habanero from here on out. It was sooo good and not too hot at all.

We placed our order to go. When we got there, it was all ready for us and sitting on the counter. We were in and out in less than 3 minutes.

We love cafe rio and will be back soon.

This is the best Cafe Rio I’ve ever been to. The food is always on point and the staff are amazing! They’re always smiling, always friendly and always doing their best to take care of their customers. Because of this, and the great deals on the app, I’ll continue to be a frequent customer.
