First Place Cafe in Nitro, WV, absolutely lives up to its name! This restaurant serves up some truly amazing food that is both delicious and beautiful to look at.
The chicken sandwich and the hamburger were delicious. The quality is evident not just in the incredible taste but also in the presentation—the food was visually perfect, showing real care in the kitchen.
And don’t overlook the side! The fries were delicious, perfectly cooked, and the ideal complement to the main course.
For a meal that is a perfect combination of flavor, quality, and visual appeal, make 1st Place Cafe your next stop.

So, I could not leave another review without deleting my previous review from 2 months ago.
My wife and I have been traveling the country for work for the past 10 years, and we have experienced a vast amount of diners and cafés and none of them have come close to the quality of the meals they provide here and the level of flavor she is able to pack into each one and that’s not including the portion sizes.
Everything is prepared fresh per order, and I don’t mean from a freezer or pre-made to cooktop.
Anytime I go somewhere to eat that has a Rueban on the menu, that is what I order, and I believe that this place has the best one i have ever had the marble rye is grilled perfectly and is crisp until the very end. My wife ordered the Bacon Steak Burger with all the fixens she was very pleased with her choice.
We very much recommend a visit. You won’t be disappointed unless you don’t like good food

This place is definitely worth a visit. The food tastes amazing and large portions. My wife ordered the original chicken sandwich with fresh cut fries, and I ordered the ruben.
Everything is made to order, so there is a little bit of a wait if they are busy but definitely worth the wait. There are eleven two top tables and one four top tables. It is a small, clean diner with great service and reasonable prices.
All of the sauces are made from scratch in house and are amazing. They will allow you to try a little before you order if you are unsure, I loved that! The blue cheese dressing is the best I have found in the Charleston area.
If you enjoy lemonade, make sure to try theirs, like everything else it is made from scratch not from the fountain or a can.
Sandwiches come with or without fries. If you are dining with someone, chances are only one of you will need to order your meal with fries. There were two of us and we still didn’t finish them. In addition, the sandwiches are HUGE and well worth the cost. Both of us took half of our sandwich home.
I ordered the Nashville Chicken and my friend ordered a cheeseburger. Both were delicious
***SIDE NOTE*** Be sure to try the pickles which are available to purchase by the jar!
Give them a try & ENJOY!!!
One of the most consistent things we’ve heard about 1st Place Cafe is that the portion sizes are very large. Knowing that, we were somewhat prepared for a big sandwich and a good bit of fries. We were still blown away by how enormous the portions were, they’re absolutely gigantic. The Nashville Blue chicken sandwiches we got took up most of a full size plate, and even with a very large pile of fries on our plates, we still had a ton of fries left over. So yes, the portions here are huge.
The food itself was great. I’m usually not a huge fan of very skinny fries but these are perfectly crunchy and well seasoned, making them very enjoyable. The Nashville Blue chicken sandwich was excellent, the spice level was pretty much perfect to give a pleasant heat but not enough to make it painful, and the blue cheese sauce provided a good counter to the heat. The breading was crispy and perfectly fried. The buns were soft but still held up well to the weight of the sandwich. Overall, just a very well made meal.
Although the menu prices may seem a little high, when you see the amount you’re getting, they’re completely fair. I really can’t overstate enough how huge these portions are. We definitely got our money’s worth and still have leftovers.
Definitely give 1st Place Cafe a try, the food is great, and the prices are very fair for the portions you get.
Ordered the American Classic Steak Cheeseburger, Original Chicken Sandwich, Nashville Blue, and the Reuben for entrees.
American Classic Steak Cheeseburger- tasty fresh toppings on a great burger.
Original Chicken Sandwich – huge sandwich topped with fresh toppings. Great taste, very satisfying.
Nashville Blue – similar to the original chicken sandwich, but with more tang. The toppings really make this sandwich truly tasty, particularly if you like bleu cheese and spiciness.
Reuben – misses the mark, the roast beef and bread are perfect; but the sauerkraut and dressing could use some improvement. The sauerkraut didn’t really come through and the dressing was too messy/thin/watery. Still a sandwich worth getting, just non-ideal in my opinion.
Fries – so good and plentiful they’re worth addressing separately. It was hard to stop eating the fries, particularly when dunking them in the sauces (extra charge for the extra product). We had two adults and two kids when we ate here, two orders of fries coupled with the four sandwiches we ordered completely filled us up and left us with snacks for later. The fries were surprisingly good cold when we ate them later that day.
Minor gripes – food is ordered at the counter, take out and dine in. On the plus side, staff let us know this as we entered. Pre-pay (and for those that use credit/debit cards, tip) is before you’ve enjoyed or didn’t enjoy the meal. Personally not a fan of this as waitstaff rely on tips and walking up to a counter, ordering and paying before you eat forces the customer to guess as to how great the meal and service is going to be.
First off, the atmosphere is fantastic – it’s cozy, welcoming, and has a really lovely vibe. But let’s get to the important stuff – the food. Cassie had the Sweet and Savory chicken sandwich with seasoned fries, and it was absolutely amazing. The chicken was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy, and the seasoning was just right. The sandwich was topped with some incredible sweet and savory toppings that really made it sing.
I went for the Bacon Cheese burger with seasoned fries, and I was blown away. The burger was juicy and flavorful, and the bacon and cheese took it to the next level. And those fries? Out of this world.
Overall, we both agreed that the chicken sandwich was the star of the show – it was easily the best we’ve had in West Virginia. But everything else was also top notch, from the friendly service to the cozy atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back, and we highly recommend First Place Cafe to anyone looking for a great meal. Five stars, no question!
