NW District’s ramen game has just leveled up with the stupid delicious bowls at Baka Umai Ramen Den.

First night of soft opening tonight, but you can tell that they are already pro’s from their other location on SE Hawthorne.

Warm greeting, great sake recommendation, and most importantly, awesome ramen.

3 things that set Baka Umai Ramen Den apart from the many other great bowls of ramen in Portland:

1. Multiple veggie options. TanTan, Shoyu, Miso, and more.

2. Traditional brothy ramen plus mazemen (brothless ramen), and tsukemen (dipping noodles) – and veggie versions of each.

3. Spice Lover’s Menu. You know it’s going to get interesting when Hatch and MaLa are on the tame end of things. Are you brave enough to try Reaper Ramen? ☠️ (I am 100% not , personally)

I had the Miso Ramen (veggie version) and was prepared to be underwhelmed as I usually am with miso broths, which are often bland and watery. I knew I was in for a treat when I could smell the savoriness of broth when the bowl was set down. Yum.

Perfectly fried Ota tofu, pickled veg, green onion. A great choice for my first visit and I can’t wait to try everything else eventually.

Husband had the TanTan Tsukemen and loved it.

The owners are so sweet, too and remembered that I’d emailed them like a ramen crazed freak after I first saw the sign go up.

Great little Ramen den. Assortment of whole food broths and toppings for every preference. Ota tofu even! Had Shoyu poultry broth, well balanced. Assorted house made condiments. Noodles fresh. Menu has loads of non ramen bites too.

I’ve been waiting for a ramen spot on 23rd for years and I’m so happy Baka Umai moved in! The ramen here was absolutely amazing, I appreciate all the different options they had for their ramen. The meat was tender and juicy, the broth was filling and tasteful; nothing else I could ask for from this bowl of noodles.

I love my dish here and will definitely be back!
