First off – the quality of the meat is good. I mean really good. You can tell especially with the brisket. It’s only seasoned with salt & pepper (which I love because I hate when the seasoning overpowers the flavor of the meat) and smoke. The serving of thick slices was more than enough and even with the thick pieces it was fork tender. Took a bite with a little bit of fat that was left on and I do believe I almost swooned. (I said “almost” because come on-we’re in Delco and it takes a lot to make us swoon ). I only ate half because honestly, I wanted to make sure I could have it again tomorrow. The collards were solid. They were a little more chopped than I prefer but that’s just me. The little bits of smoked meat with them and nicely salted made it a perfect side to the brisket.
Orders come with a piece of sweet potato cornbread which I had never had but it was definitely an improvement over most restaurant’s drydrydrydry corn bread/muffins/sawdust bites that no amount of butter can help. Tender and cooked all the way so not goopy or overly “wet” because of the sweet potatoes in it. And it didn’t even need butter! You also get pickles which have a bit of a bite and they can certainly help cut the heaviness of a platter of smoked meats but they weren’t my favorite. Doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong with them, they’re just crunchier and with more heat than I like in dill pickles ♀️ He loved them though. Speaking of hims….
He ordered the smoke wings Shanghai style which means hoison bbq sauce, sesame seeds and scallion slices. I saw them when he was fixing his plate and was a little worried bc of their size (larger than average wings). We rarely get wings anymore bc we’ve yet to find any as good as Jack Cassidy’s were. What we have found is that a lot of places like to serve these big drums and splits but they never ever (ever) cook them long enough to render the fat so they always just seem ….slimy? Cassidy’s had that perfected and I don’t know what voodoo chicken wing god they paid to teach them how to cook perfect wings but it was worth every penny they paid or sacrifice they gave.
Tanglewood has nailed their wings because the pieces render the fat and flabby skin perfectly in the low and slow heat of the family. Then they get a flash in the fryer for heat and crispiness (and thank you voodoo chicken wing god for telling them to avoid coating or breading,!) so when you order them, they are still pretty large, but the meat is tight! Not slimy, not overcooked, just poultry perfection. And I know he dug them because the bones were so clean-not a trace of sauce, meat or bits-what was left on the plate looked more like a recently excavated dinosaur fossil that’s been baking in the heat for a thousand years than a pile of chicken wing bones
He didn’t want any sides, just wings, and his only regret he said was not getting 2 orders
And did I mention the service? I stopped in on my way home from work on a Friday evening and not only were they not out of anything (and they had plenty of customers) I walked out with my order in only about 15 minutes! And they were kind and professional.
I’m so glad we finally ordered there and we will most certainly be back. I mean they have street corn and honey crisp slaw and smoked kielbasa to try-oh my!
Burnt ends are available, but only on Thursdays
Did not get many pictures before we attacked the food. And since I ate the brisket with my hands and licked my fingers like an animal, I didn’t want to touch my phone
If you go, talk to the staff behind the counter (say hey to Jimmy!). Ask for their recommendations if you’re not sure what to order. You definitely can’t wrong.
I’m already thinking about what to order next-nom nom
I myself ordered brisket and bratwurst with a side of beans. It also came with a side of cornbread and a choice of two sauces. All was pretty good. I would not mind eating here again the next time I am up that way
