Got a later start than usual on this day, I’m normally the first customer when I roll up to a place like this while on the road. But when I arrived just a little after 7 am, the counter was already full of locals having breakfast.
Little did I know when I picked this spot that it was the diner featured in Norman Rockwell’s “The Runaway.” How insanely cool. And, although the original owner, Joe, and most of the memorabilia are gone, the swivel stools and the counter still are, and that’s where I sat. Because of course.
There is something about eating at places like this that just fills my soul. The food was excellent by my standards, with crispy bacon, a perfect omelet, well done home fries and a perfectly buttered and toasted english muffin. $14.98 before the tip. Unreal.
I would have taken more photos, but didn’t want to disturb the locals, and besides, there are plenty of pics on these reviews already.
I just wanted to give a shout out to the new owners for keeping this place going, and thriving, preserving the past and serving a damn good breakfast at a damn good price.
I will be back, as I’m in the Lee area quite a bit every summer.
As someone else here said … best breakfast in the Berkshires.

Joe’s Diner is hands down the best spot for breakfast in The Berkshires. Awesome prices and the quality of the food is unbeatable. Scrambled eggs were cooked to perfection, bacon was crisp, and the shredded hash browns were amazing. The over-easy eggs were done just right, the pancake was the perfect size and fluffy. A great classic American diner, which we love. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. We’ll stop by every time we’re in town.
NOTE: they only accept cash but have an ATM on site.

Very nostalgic and homey. Didn’t catch our waitresses name, she was very pleasant and had a sense of humor. Took photos for us and we also adlib Norman Rockwell’s “Runaway”. A must visit. The food is very good, well priced and reminded me of my younger days.

My Wife and I have eaten here numerous times, & there’s never been an off day. Regardless of what we ordered its always been on point. Everything from Burgers, Breakfast & even Seafood! They only will accept cash and have an atm near the restroom area in back of diner ($2.50 fee) just a FYI/heads up. Great staff all very friendly and accommodating to all ages, races, and backgrounds.

We stopped for lunch and the food and service was great! Very friendly staff and more-than-reasonably-priced, delicious meals. Swedish meatballs on noodles was excellent and chicken salad sandwich was perfect. We will definitely return!

Entered the diner and wished the waitress in sight a good morning. Her response was a rude stare. Walked right out as anyone should. I get you might be having a bad day but all you gotta do is to nod in acknowledgement and point me to a seat if a smile is too much to ask for.

Made famous by the painting The Runaway by Norman Rockwell, whose museum is located in nearby Stockbridge, Joe’s Diner still has the famous lunch counter setup, along with a wall displaying prints of the painting. The Diner is no-frills and affordable, serving the same fare as Rockwell would have eaten in the 1950s. No where else will you get such delicious fish and chips at a bargain price. Locals and tourists alike are super friendly.
