This is clearly a bar that went with distillery branding in the early ’10s when it was trendy. They source their whiskey from an off-site distillery, and the staff at the bar, at least when I came in, looked at me weird when I asked after the mash bill.
The whiskeys themselves have been watered down to 40% ABV, which further tells me that this is an operation made to extract tourist dollars and not make good liquor.
For a $15 flight, I expect to either have a conversation with staff who know the general outlines of the production and aging process, or at very least a laminated handout on it to read as I sip; this place had neither.
The straight bourbon has a corn note that veers heavily into iodine, and it’s present in the “Overproof” white dog, so I wonder if they’re making a late tails cut to maximize production. The “whiskey” is bland and unexciting, and certainly not worth buying a bottle of.
If you’re in the area and looking to have a good distillery experience, go visit Wollersheim or Driftless Glen: don’t waste your time or money here.
And bar management: if you don’t want to be judged like this, don’t call yourself a distillery and peddle someone else’s mediocre spirits as your own. This is a choice you made.
I wish I could say this was the worst part, but unfortunately it wasn’t. When I asked what the mashbill on the bourbon and whiskey is, 3 separate workers could not answer the question. In fact, one of them answered “the bourbon was aged for 2 years in a charred barrel.” You would really think an establishment that sells their own distilled products, they would train their employees to have a basic knowledge of the product and the process itself.
The bourbon tasted just like the establishment. Bland and generic. At least it was warmer than the bun, I guess. To be fair, it would probably fine as a mixer, but I will definitely tell you that there are many many other bourbons that are better than this one at $45 or even less.
I stopped in to try a flight of their spirits. Bourbon and whiskey primarily. In the fright, I did try each of their spirits except the vodka and gin.
The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I did double up on the Bourbon and Whiskey, but each of the other spirits was noteworthy and interesting. The ginger Brandy was good, not overy spicy. A nice change if you’re having a Brandy Manhattan or Brandy Alexander. Both the Bourbon and Whiskey are very nice for small batch. Can be enjoyed both straight or in cocktails. The Rum was probably the most interesting, sweet, and a bit of spice, definitely great for cocktails.
Would highly recommend stopping in to try.
