What an absolute gem in Reno. Easily the best, authentic Chinese food I’ve had in Northern Nevada, possibly ever. Tucked away in the back of an unassuming shopping mall is Chinese cuisine well worth making a trip for.
I was immediately greeted when I entered, and started with some hot tea. I ended up ordering Garlic Cucumbers and Dry Stir Fried Pork Intestines. The cucumbers were light and refreshing with a punch of garlic. The intestines came out crispy and piled high with red fried chilis and szechuan peppercorns. I am a huge spice nut and this absolutely hit the spot! (If you have a low spice tolerance you may want to ask for less spicy as the server did not ask how spicy I wanted it). The cucumbers were the perfect accompaniment to balance the heat and numbing from the chilis.
When I first looked at the menu, I thought the prices were a bit high. After seeing the enormous portion sizes, it all made perfect sense. There was easily enough for 2 full meals for me (245lb, 6ft3in man with an appetite). The portions are clearly designed to be shared. On that point they also feature traditional Chinese style banquet seating with the lazy suzan in the middle for family style eating.
All told I was extremely impressed with the food quality, service, portion sizes and ambiance. I will absolutely be adding Shanghai Bistro to my regular rotation!

Shanghai Bistro has become our favorite Chinese restaurant since its current management took over and brought three fantastic chefs on board. The service is prompt and friendly, the atmosphere is pleasing, and the dishes not only taste authentic, they are also highly palatable. Before heading to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, we stopped for a meal because we were craving some authentic Chinese food. We ordered the spicy wontons, beef noodle soup, beef chow mein, and roasted duck over rice.
The food was delicious and the service was top-notch. The restaurant features a luxurious Chinese-style decor that creates a great atmosphere.
What impressed us most, however, was the kindness of the staff. I accidentally forgot my coat at the table, and our server was kind enough to run all the way to our car to return it to us. We visited around 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 8th. Thank you so much for the wonderful food and the exceptional service!

Absolutely phenomenal. I got the la zi ji with wonton soup and they didn’t hold back on the spices. Pictures on the wall of you don’t know what you want.
Yes they have some American Chinese stuff, and even some more pan-Asian like pad Thai, but you’re not going here for that. You’re going for Chinese deep tracks with soul infused. The name says Shanghai, but the menu is rich with Sichuan and Cantonese offerings as well.
Food comes out when it’s ready, not in some artificial order based on who ordered when. They have tables with lazy susans for your family, where you can order entrees family style and split them all. If you order a whole fish you get the whole fish. Etc. etc.
With due respect, anyone who gave a negative review because the staff aren’t bubbly and their their “fried meat with sticky sauce” wasn’t up to their imagination has missed the point entirely. This place gets it right. If you want it right, go here.

Quick stop on my way home. Food was fast service was friendly. I just had the Sweet and Sour Chicken with steamed rice. It was great and I’ll definitely be back to try more of their menu.
