This was a wonderful dinner experience and a perfect way to celebrate our anniversary. I have been following Chef Yoshihiro Tauchi on Instagram for some time and was so excited to finally try his omakase restaurant in Charlottesville. It absolutely lived up to the anticipation. We booked the 5:30 PM seating, which is a lighter omakase at $70 per person (but I definitely felt stuffed afterwards). The 7:30 PM seating offers a full-course experience at $125 per person. We happened to be the only reservation at that time, which made the evening feel especially intimate. The restaurant is located on the Downtown Mall, and we were first seated on the side couches while Chef Yoshihiro and his wife, Yukiko, prepared for service. They started us off with green tea that was incredibly fragrant and smooth, and you could immediately tell it was high quality. We were then seated at the chef’s counter, which really elevated the experience. Watching Chef Yoshihiro prepare each course with such precision and care was fascinating, and it was genuinely special to see him and Yukiko working together so seamlessly. Every dish was excellent, from the sashimi to the various nigiri courses. We added the wagyu, which was absolutely worth it. The final hand roll was a standout, topped with caviar and gold and filled with a medley of different fish that brought everything together beautifully. At the end, we ate dessert along with complimentary matcha (thanks to chef!!).

While this experience is on the pricier side, I have done omakase in New York and DC, and this was by far my favorite. The quality, thoughtfulness, and intimacy of the experience made it completely worth it. I am a huge fan of Chef Yoshihiro and Yukiko and truly hope to return again soon.

***** Please do not be discouraged by some of the negative reviews on Google. I highly recommend booking a reservation and meeting Chef Yoshihiro yourself to experience his omakase firsthand. While omakase is on the pricier side (and requires reservation!!!), it is important to understand that Chef Yoshihiro imports his fish and many ingredients directly from Japan or abroad, which is reflected in the quality, care, and overall experience. I would not hesitate to return and would encourage others to judge this restaurant based on their own visit rather than online negativity.*****

This was an outstanding experience – the best sushi meal I’ve ever had anywhere, including at very good restaurants in Japan. It’s expensive – a real treat – but worth every penny. We were served many kinds of fish. We’ve never had in Sushi before, all prepared to perfection and delicious. The chef This expert, the Service was perfect. We will return anytime we are in for a very special meal.

I’ve been to nearly every restaurant in Charlottesville and this was by far the best experience and quality I’ve had yet. I finally feel like spending that much was actually worth it. It was so special from start to finish. I’m dreaming of the next time I’ll get to come back. If you have family or good friends who like raw fish, this is a 20/10! Came to the 7:30 seating and split a wine/sake pairing — which was totally enough for both of us!

It’s great to see an Omakase concept in Charlottesville, and the sushi is solid. It is clearly a chef-driven restaurant and lacks when it comes to how the restaurant is operated. Here are some things I wish we knew before going:

-We arrived to a locked door and met the other parties while banging on the door for the 5:30 reservation. It turns out their signage is off, and the restaurant / bar under the big Omakase Obscura sign is not where you go. You go one door to the right. Go figure.
-The phone number for the restaurant doesn’t work. This is not normally an issue, but the system accidentally sent us a cancellation message for our reservation 24 hours in advance. We had to track them down on instagram to confirm this was an error.
-They will not sell you one beer or glass of wine. They refuse and say you have to accept the full chef’s pairing, or you can’t have an alcoholic drink.

We went to Omakase twice over the summer and it was incredible. We went back this week expecting a similar experience and have no idea what happened here between August and now. Both the drinks and sushi seemingly got more expensive, but the sushi is also no longer made fresh by a chef at the bar. The menu is much smaller and the rolls are all pre-made from a fridge on paper plates, which is crazy when charging $13-14 for very basic rolls. The ambiance is also… off. We spent ~$75 for 2 drinks and 3 rolls and it was such a disappointing experience.

It seems as if they’re in a transition phase while building out a restaurant next door but nothing about the branding or menu explain this and the prices just don’t make sense. They should either stop serving sushi for the time being or make it much less expensive. We want this place to be great again!

This is hands-down my favorite bar on the downtown mall; I love coming here with my friends. The drinks are great, the sushi is delicious, and the menu is ever-changing, so it’s impossible to get bored. The staff are incredibly kind and friendly.

Worst service experience of my life. I rarely post negative reviews but this one justifies it. The manager needs a major lesson in hospitality. Felt like an annoyance after spending $90 on an appetizer (mediocre sushi) and two cocktails. Absolute Joke, save your time (and mental health) and go to Ten!

I did the full omakase experience, and it was incredible. Best dining experience I’ve ever had. The wait staff was very knowledgeable about each course. Each dish was beautifully prepared and delicious.

Too dark to see anything, all the sushi is premade and cold. No chef on premise. Paid $43 for a sushi roll a glass of wine and a $5 coke (before tip). An absolute train wreck of a business model. I look forward to them going out of business.

Walked in and was looking to try this place but basically was refused service for what I’m assuming is cause I’m covered in tattoos or cause my hoodie displayed a metal band. Hostess refused to acknowledge me and after multiple times of finally getting her to speak to me, I decided to pass and go somewhere else. Sorry I don’t fit the vibe, guess my money is only good somewhere else.
