We stumbled upon this place looking for something interesting to eat near Hood River. We weren’t expecting much, as my family is used to very gourmet pizza places in Portland and elsewhere. We thought we had had the best. We are now starting to wonder if we were not mistaken. What we found was actually the find of our summer, if not year so far.
A rustic, unassuming venue greets you. But don’t let the quaint surroundings fool you. This man is a true artist when it comes to the fresh ingredients, processes and care that goes into his pizza. To start off, there is only one other gourmet restaurant that I know of in Portland that ferments its dough, and I believe I prefer the crust at this establishment. On top of that, they actually import their own flour from Italy specially used in wood fired stoves, hand make their own artisan cheeses, cure their own meats, make their own tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, and grow all their fresh ingredients for every slice of pizza that comes out of this place. And you can taste it in every bite.
Now to what we ordered. We had the Margherita pizza and BBQ chicken. The Margherita pizza had such a fresh simple taste that it really drew you in. The Italian flour crust went perfectly with it, giving it an authentic lightness. The hand crafted cheese really stood out, along with the freshness of the ingredients, basil grown on site, but what really stood out was the tomato sauce, which is made by the owners. Just a hint of subtle sweetness that accents the robust, fresh flavor of that delicious sauce. So flavorful, vivid, and seductive, we found outselves eating much more then we intended and never regretting a bite of it.
And if that was good, the BBQ chicken, was equally good in its own right, if not better in certain ways, in my opinion. Upon taking a bite, you are hit with a multi layered flavor explosion. You can taste the handmade artisan cheese, smokey BBQ chicken, basil grown on site, delicious authentic Italian thin crust. Then there is the in house made BBQ sauce, which is just unreal. Strong, robust, yet not too over powering. Perfect for the pizza. The same question kept coming into our heads, “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL OUR LIVES??” In fact, both pizzas were like a symphony. Everything in their perfect proportion. All working together with vividness, yet complexity. The pizzas were so good in fact that we ate until we could not comfortably eat any more. And then ate the left overs later that night. And all or this for $12 for each 12 inch pizza. A pizza that feeds two people realistically. A small price to pay for such artistry and perfection by people who have to love and believe in what they are doing.
This is obviously a passion and labor of love for the friendly congenial owners. And I feel privileged to have partaken of their hard work and dedication to their craft. If there is a God in Heaven, this man will have his own permanent place soon that will be open year round. And if you don’t stop by this humble abode, and partake of this man’s pizza and passion, you will be sorely missing out. My family and I ate this for lunch and we are still raving about and looking forward to our next visit.
I think you need chef Gordon Ramsey could help. I think service should be good. Not wasting time on cell phone or talking forever with coworkers . I could go on.
I bet they won’t make changes .
Gluck
They didn’t return our calls or texts, they just didn’t come.
We’ve been trying for over a week to recover our deposit and to give Focolare the chance to make things right. It seems that William double-booked himself on the night of our event.
Highly unprofessional and unreliable. Would not recommend ever.
