I come in a few times a year for work, always a stop when in town for the iconic establishment and close to the the hotel. Good drink specials different nights. Herb is great and love talking with him! Still remember my first Southern Belle with him! Definitely a college bar though which while im not exactly out of that crowd yet can be a little tough to get a seat and tables get overtaken by the groups so hard to find a spot for a single guy and not really a good place to hangout and try to meet someone or strike up a conversation due to it all being groups. Only other thing is the sticky floors in the bathrooms with no doors or toilet seats lol but I understand college kids. Can take a little while to get a drink but Herb always takes care of you and the girls are nice!

I try so hard to love The U. Herb is great, does a great job anytime he serves us, overall takes good care of his bar. The atmosphere has had a clear shift. it’s gotten really hostile lately, the vibes in general are bad, it feels dangerous in there now. Service takes forever and the drinks aren’t as good. All the seasoned bartenders have left, working with all new bartenders, and we give them grace for that but they are also just rude. several occasions they’ve told us they were out of the ingredients for drinks, just to walk across the bar and put the exact ingredients into a different drink. they don’t want to make anything that takes time or effort. the bar is just scary now, and gross, and sub-par. really sad to watch it go down hill.

Absolutely amazing college bar! The owner, Herb, is not only super kind but might know everyone on campus – he has endless stories about campus and the hundred of thousands of people he’s crossed paths with!

came right at last call and a girl with brown hair and a red top looked at me, looked at her coworker and said “im not serving anyone else” there were also about 6 other people BEHIND the bar WORKING, and everyone ignored me. i work in a restaurant, I get it, but i would be reprimanded if i said or did this in front of a customer. very disrespectful

This was my first visit to the Union. The owner was very nice, but the 3 girls that were bartenders seemed to be new or standoffish. The owner seemed to be doing most of the work and interacting with customers.
I went here with the intention of having a drink and getting food. After ordering a drink, I asked one of the female bartenders for a menu, and she informed me that they don’t serve food.
We were disappointed considering the name say Pub and Grill.

Wouldn’t give it 1 star. The website says they serve food. So we wanted to try something different. We walk in the floors are very sticky, it smells like straight liquor (it’s a bar so it’s expected) & no one even spoke to us. My husband asks about where to sit & order something to eat & the bartender says we don’t serve food here. So we took our business elsewhere. Website needs updated. Didn’t like the decor. The only thing I did like was the music that they had on there.

Owner would not allow anyone with a Michigan ID to enter due to a shooting that took place somewhere close by, not even in the bar, over a month ago. Apparently the guy was from Michigan. So nobody from Michigan is allowed in? Ridiculous. This place is anti-American, don’t give them your money.

They recently got a new company making their food in the kitchen, and the food itself is fantastic. Generally, the place is too busy for my liking. Even when it isn’t , I genuinely feel that it takes too long to get a drink. I think the main problem is that the surface area of the bar itself is too large for the amount of bartenders they have. Which in this case is too few, but the prices are very good. The only reason I would maybe avoid this place, though, is that there are bar fights, and while they’re not frequent, they get pretty bad.

My wife and I went to The Union the past two Mondays since our local Southside Bar is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays. While there is no food service at The Union on Monday evening the bartender was super nice and I had a beer and my wife a mixed drink at a reasonable price. We finished and paid our check. All was good. But the Monday bartender suggested we come back and try the fried pickles. Fast forward to Friday, April 19th at about 5:30pm.

We entered The Union and were greeted by a nice gentleman. We found two seats at the bar. I ordered a Budweiser and my wife ordered a Bahama Mama. We were asked to pay upfront which is I guess their policy. We asked for menu’s to order food. The bartender said that if you order food it will come out “back there” and you will have to get it yourself. Strange and not customer focused but if that is your policy so be it. We waited and nobody ever came back to take our order or ask if we wanted another drink. We left and took ourselves and our money to our local Southside Bar where we were greeted and both had burgers and fries. We were not told that our food would come out somewhere, the bartenders brought it to us with a smile.

So to the owner of The Union, you have a nice place and on Monday your bartender is awesome. But our experience on April 19th left us more than disappointed. We love to support local businesses and I guess we will continue to patronize our local bar where our business is appreciated. By the way we are in our early 60’s and I am a disabled veteran and my wife is a retired law enforcement officer. Not that it matters though. We wish you well and hope your business is a great success for many years to come.
