It’s hard to find authentic Chinese food but Jeff knows what he’s doing. Things to consider before coming here: you have to order at least 24 hours in advance, it’s only Jeff and his wife cooking and serving so don’t expect the waiters to be attending all of your needs, this is a family style restaurant with a lazy Susan so you can share all your food with the table. Highly recommend you eat here just know it’s not your typical restaurant.

Chef Jeff makes the best Shanghainese food in all of Michigan! There is not a better place for soup dumplings or pan fried dumplings. You can order any dish and you will not be disappointed. You need to call a day or so ahead of time with your order to give Chef Jeff the time to gather the freshest ingredients and make everything from scratch, and it’s definitely worth it. Special shout out to the Shrimp, Tofu, & Salted Egg Yolk Sauce, delicious and delicate.

5/5 Jeff’s is a place that you’d never expect to be as special as it is. Reservations must be made in advance and dine in is the only option. This is because Jeff makes everything fresh from scratch, guaranteeing an unbelievable culinary experience. Most will tell you to come here for the dumplings and that’s good advice. However, my favorite dish is the custom shrimp wonton soup that I ordered since I don’t eat pork. What every dish has in common is they don’t disappoint when it comes to texture and flavor. You can always count on a hot pot of tea that pairs nicely with everything else. Whenever you’re craving authentic Shanghainese, make the reservation.

Final comment is I think the place should be renamed “Mr. and Mrs. Jeff’s Kitchen” since his wife is also an important part of the experience. Her level of service is outstanding. It’s obvious the couple lives to please their patrons.

Won’t get anything like this in the United States. Authentic and delicious. Jeff has great personality and makes the experience all the better. Trust him when placing your order ahead of time. He will not steer you wrong. Will always come back!

Definitely a special and unique place that I would highly recommend! The soup dumplings were supposedly the star of the show, but I personally really enjoyed the sweet glutinous rice wine soup. I love that there were glutinous rice balls with black sesame paste as well as tapioca pearls in there, and it seemed like the black sesame paste was made with some type of lard (maybe pork or duck?) which really elevated the flavors of the whole thing. There’s something so satisfying about sweet and savory flavors with a touch of sourness from the rice wine in that soup. And of course, the dried osmathus flowers floating at the top created the most delicate aroma. The other dishes were wonderful as well, but I’ve never had a sweet glutinous rice wine soup quite like Jeff’s. If my taste buds could sing, this would be it.

Very interesting place!! You call in advance, setup a reservation, they text you the current menu that Jeff is working with and you order in advance. You come in and Jeff makes a personalized meal for you. The food is absolutely next level. Couldn’t recommend this place enough. Soup dumplings are INCREDIBLE!!

It’s a very unassuming place with stellar food. Don’t let the need to preorder deter you, or do – so there’s more availability for me
You won’t regret going to Jeff’s!

Absolutely the best Chinese restaurant in Michigan. They offer authentic Shanghainese cuisine. Dumplings are even better than Din Tai Fung, and everything we had was very nice. Reservation only, and you must order ahead as well because they cook everything fresh on the day. I’ve been to most of the well know Chinese restaurants in the metro Detroit and this place is the best without a doubt.

I don’t understand what these bad reviews are complaining about. It’s clearly stated on the website and the menu that it’s by reservation only, dishes have to be pre-ordered, and only one card per table is accepted.

This is the best Chinese restaurant that you can find in Michigan, or in the Midwest in general. It has very authentic Chinese food — very fresh, umami, and delicious. Jeff and his wife clearly put a lot of effort and care into every stage of the meal preparation, which makes each dish unique and exceptional. I believe Jeff used to be a chef at one of the top restaurants in Shanghai. His dedication to every dish makes this place so special.

This is probably the best Shanghainese style restaurant near Detroit. Most of the cuisine are authentic, such as Xiang You Shan Hu (rice field eel), Zui Ji (wined chicken), and Chao Mian (Shanghai-style fried noodle). You need to reserve at least one day before you visit, not only for space, but also for the food. They need to prepare the food beforehand. One thing you need to know is that it takes a while for them to prepare the food even if you have reserved. It is normal that you come to the restaurant and wait for 30 minutes before you get the meal. In addition, their food is a little expensive. However, I think it is worthy if you are a fan of Shanghainese meal or if you want to try some Shanghainese cuisine.
