Steak ‘n Shake, a classic American brand, was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt who pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milkshakes.
For over 85 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word steak stood for steakburger. The term shake stood for hand-dipped milkshakes. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business.
Today, Steak ‘n Shake remains the better burger leader, serving premium 100% beef steakburgers, hand-dipped milkshakes, thin crispy fries, and more. Steakburgers are made without preservatives or artificial ingredients, topped with fresh produce, and always hand-crafted to order.
Chain known for steakburgers & milkshakes offering a dinerlike space with retro flair.

I sure enjoyed my lunch stop here. The staff was very friendly. The service too, friendly and helpful. My wife and I enjoyed two burgers, shakes and fries. The fries made using tallow were excellent.
The outside appearance has a very nostalgic feel, decor, and a route 66 connection. A great stop and would definitely go again.

This was our family’s first time trying this restaurant, we came because their promise of better ingredients and fries cooked with beef tallow. There was no hospitality, we waited to be seated at the sign next to the register for more than 10 mins. We were passed by the servers several times, they didn’t greet or ask if we’ve been helped. Finally, the manager who was busy with togo orders asked the server if we’ve been helped, the server replied with “I don’t know.” The server then sat us down, we already knew what we wanted, but the server left and never came back, didn’t ask us if we wanted to order drinks, or if we were ready to order. After another 10 minutes we left. The guy who ordered a togo after we were seated got his food and left at the same time we decided to leave.

For it being a S & S, the sweetest, kindest folks working here are just phenomenal! . Special shout out to CJ, Jana, Mia & the others for serving delicious hot food, excellent value and out of this world customer service. We were treated with a healthy mix between family & royalty. Everything & everyone were so incredible. I hope management recognizes these folks , there smiles & incredible value & awards them accordingly. This is not your average S & S. You walk in as a customer and you’re Family! I was surprised by how incredible the value was. Thank you Takhomasak S&S on National & St. Louis. You folks embody what others should be like in this world. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.

Have been to the US many times, but had never experienced this chain until my last trip in early December 2025. I was pleasantly surprised and pleased at the quality of the food and the ethics of the company. The origin of their ingredients and the way they cook their food is a step in the right direction with regards to healthy eating. For me, this branch (near Andy’s Frozen Custard) was better than the branch on South Glenstone, that decided to close at 7pm the day I visited because they were having a Private Party for Staff. Really?

My husband and I went here for dinner the other day after probably 10 years of not having it. It was only $20 after tip for two meals and shakes. The food didn’t take long to come out and was fresh! The shakes were huge and I could only finish half. The banana was sooo good! We will be back. Remember you can do a half and half shake no extra charge!

Such a great location! It’s on Route 66 and has a lit up sign.
They serve standard Steak and Shake fair which is to say… Delicious burgers and shoestring fries. I got the Western Burger with savory barbecue sauce, fried onions, bacon, cheese… divine!
I even ordered a Butterfinger shake and it was yummy!

I came 60 miles from Carthage to kill tome on Saturday mid-day. Stumbled on this Steak n Shake by chance. Ordered the #2.
Good service and great atmosphere were exceeded by very tasty and fresh burger and fries ( great fries btw).
Not expensive and kid friendly.
I will gladly return to this (joint).

I can’t believe I’ve lived here 17 yrs and this was the 1st time I have had Steak n Shake….
My boss had gotten the Garlic Burger for lunch. It smelled so good that I went and got one, too. When I walked in, the restaurant was full. So, I was expecting a long wait to put in and receive my to go order. That’s fine. There’s a pod cast I wanted to listen to anyhow. But Mia noticed me immediately and put my order in. I didn’t turn my podcast on. Instead, I enjoyed watching the cook make the burger patties and another the fries. And in 7 minutes, my to go bag was handed to me. This burger is delicious! So were the fries, and they hold up well cold (if that makes sense). I had gotten the meal, which included a drink, for $8.99. With the: all-around quick service, nostalgic experience, and quality of food, this is a great value. In the past, McD’s or BK for a quick bite. No more, lol.

I made a quick stop. The facility was not busy at the time since. I was greeted promptly and assisted promptly. I only stopped to use the restroom and grab a large order of fries to split with my son as a snack while we were driving home. Someone, presumably the manager, was counting what appeared to be a large some of money out in the open. I thought that was a bit risky. The fries were over priced ($4.31) and the were lukewarm at best.

Me and my Husband stopped to have dinner there on our way home from Illinois. Steak ‘n Shake restaurants are nostalgic for my husband, he grew up going to them. Unfortunately, during our trip in Illinois, we were unable to stop at one. So we stopped in Springfield, Missouri. Our Waitress Billie Was fantastic! She was so friendly, very knowledgeable and was just all around pleasant. As a business owner myself, someone like Billie is who I would want to represent my business.
We are on our way home back to Texas, but will be stopping again in April. Hopefully we get to see Billie again.
