My man and I are self-proclaimed Chinese buffet connoisseurs. I grew up eating authentic Chinese food cooked by native Chinese people. So take my word for it – this is not a good choice for Chinese buffet. While the selection of dishes is decent, and the restaurant is spacious and clean with mostly friendly staff, the food is the most important thing, and the food is not great. A dine-in restaurant that doesn’t serve its best food for Saturday lunch isn’t worth your money. The egg rolls are greasy and taste like they need to change their grease. Most dishes are either undercooked or burnt. The “stuffed” mushrooms are too moist with zero flavor. Even the ice cream doesn’t taste right, and there’s only chocolate. You can drive a few more miles to Pittsburg or Fort Scott and get much better food for your hard-earned dollars. I wish we had.

Warning they don’t accept debit cards or credit, cash or check only. There’s no sign saying this until you go to eat at the restaurant.I’ve had better but for 6.99 it wasn’t bad at all. A good variety, the fried Catfish was old tasting and over done. The general chicken was ok no real defining flavor. The water was horrible and I don’t drink soda so that was a little bit of a let down, lemon juice didn’t help either. I think for the price and a smaller town it is worth a visit if your hungry, it’s about 5-8 minutes from I 49.

I really wanted to like this place, but I don’t even know where to begin. Let’s start with the tea I ordered. I took one sip, and it left a stale, moldy aftertaste that reminded me of an unpleasant experience I had at another restaurant that wasn’t cleaning their tea dispensers properly. I didn’t complain because it was just tea, so I drank my wife’s drink instead and moved on, hoping the food would be better.
At first, things seemed promising, but then I bit into some chicken that made me feel sick. It had a fatty, processed taste that was hard to shake. I tried another piece, which was okay, but the next one was just as bad as the first. Some of the chicken was decent, but the noodles and rice were inedible—I’d rather eat microwaveable rice and noodles, to be honest.
To add to the disappointment, no one ever checked to see if we needed drink refills, and the restaurant had a lingering unpleasant smell. It felt like the place could use a deep clean and maybe some brighter lighting to see what you’re actually eating.
When we went to pay, the line was long, and the interaction with the cashier was uncomfortable, as if she was upset that we didn’t finish our food. I almost forgot to mention the signs on the buffet warning not to waste food. Well, I wasted plenty, and trust me, I’m usually someone who clears my plate.
Sadly, it’s a one-star experience overall. I wouldn’t recommend this place, and I definitely won’t be coming back. I never thought I’d find Chinese food I didn’t like, especially as a fanatic, but I wish them the best in improving their restaurant.

Awesome Cashew Chicken!!! Visiting family in Nevada, MO from Texas and California (family gathering) and stopped into Chinese Chef for lunch. The food was buffet style (not what we wanted, but we stayed and tried it and we’re so glad we did!). We ordered it again the next day for a large party and everyone in the house went back the next day – and this is a group of world-traveling foodies – they couldn’t believe how fresh and delicious it was! When I’m back in Nevada, I’ll be visiting Chinese Chef our first night back!
