The food was terrible. The macaroni and cheese did not taste good. The mashed potatoes tasted like they made it with sour milk. They had almost 0 southern cooking. They had carrots and green beans, mashed potatoes, corn, and I think that was it for the vegetables. The service was terrible. The lady that helped us was nice but then we asked for some milk and she just completely forgot because she was a senior citizen so we just left without our milk. The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful. It’s a very cozy restaurant if you wanted to go for just a salad it’s probably the best place to go. The dessert was also good. The prices were really fair, but I just really wasn’t into the main hot foods. I didn’t think they tasted good and they need to have more southern fair.

Down the street from Stetson University in DeLand, FL, there’s a big green house hiding a serious comfort-food situation. Cook’s is basically a Southern cubby hole of home cooking.

I ordered turkey and stuffing – you choose one meat and then get unlimited starches, veggies, drinks and a dessert for $20.99. Want more meat? It’s about $5 extra. There’s a full salad bar, plus a rotating hot bar that changes daily, so it’s very “pick your own Sunday plate” energy.

I was in town for three days and my mom kept saying, “This place is outstanding.” I didn’t believe her. I was wrong. The food is hearty, the service is top-tier, and they’ll even box your dessert to go if you’re too full to eat it there.

Check out my lobby photo and count how many people are staring at me like, “Who is this man doing a photo shoot at Cook’s?” I was there for two seconds and apparently that was two seconds too long.

This is the best place to fellowship for senior birthdays!
4 or more in party, the birthday person meal and cake (upon request) is free. The food and service is always great and the service is down home good! There is always something for everyone to enjoy. Also, they are open on Christmas!
The pics are from my mom’s 88th birthday! This is the second time that she’s had her birthday celebrated here. Her birthday party was here last year as well. Since then, there has been several birthdays for seniors from my church held here. Love the restaurant and the staff! Recommended highly, for small business meetings too.

My friend and I came here on a Sunday for an early dinner (roughly 4pm). The parking lot was full which was a good sign as we’d never been here before.

The restaurant itself used to be a house which only added to the charm of the place. We were quickly greeted and seated with our server, Debbie. She asked if we had been there before and we both said we hadn’t. She explained how it works which was simple- you get one meat, unlimited hot side bar (veggies) and salad bar. That was around $15 per person. Or for $20 you get all the above, plus a drink and a dessert. We decided to go big or go home.

I’m not a vegetable fan so I skipped the salad bar. My friend liked it fine. For meats I chose the well done roast beef and he went with the ham. The hot side bar was underwhelming. More vegetables. I was hoping for pasta or possibly rice.

The food was amazing and the meat was served in fair portions. Everything tasted homemade. Didn’t even feel like we were at a restaurant- it was like being at grandmas house.

Along with bringing your drinks, the server brings the garlic bread which was amazing. They also bring the desserts. Too many to choose from. They make everything in house and with 20 different desserts, it wasn’t easy to pick just one. I went with the brownie and my friend ordered a strawberry parfait.

I don’t have the biggest sweet tooth and I almost ate the whole massive brownie!!! We left full and satisfied. This place is a rare find in a world where chain restaurants reign supreme. We drove 45 minutes to eat here and we both will be back.

Small town feel. Love the old fashioned style decor. Small , quaint and charming restaurant. This was my second time dining here. Great place to get away from the over the top new style restaurants. No loud music. No flashy over the top high price drinks . The food is served to you cafeteria style. Fresh Country style food and restaurant. The desserts are second to none!!!!! A must have if your sweet tooth is large. I would recommend this place. Older crowds simply love this hidden gem. The younger crowd should take time and visit Cook’s.

Our waitress Debbie and the guy at the carving station was great. The other employees not do much. When we came no one greeted us even the hostess and the waitress who were at the host stand. They too worried about the waitress paying her lunch bill. We had never been here before so I asked do we wait to be seated? The waitress seem annoyed and she will help you when she is done. No welcome or I will be with in a moment, no greeting. But our waitress made up for it. Most of the staff walked around with grumpy or annoyed expression. One waitress was giving mean looks to everyone. Our food was good. The ingredients seemed fresh. Overall it was a good dining experience.

There was no wait time going to my table. I really liked the staff. They were really on top of everything. I liked the meat carver in the buffet line. He was very nice and polite to me. The food was great for the price I would 100% go back.

First time visit
Warm, “homie” atmosphere
Friendly staff
The food was good 3.5
The selection was not good. Only 3 vegetables to choose from and 3 starch items. Mashed potatoes with gravy was ok, Turkey and dressing n green beans were good. The best thing was the table bread. Desserts were dry but had some flavor. We were the first customers, and looking at the dessert area, some were left overs from day before, which led to desserts being dry. You can only pick 1 meat and 1 dessert but refills on vegetables. The salad was fresh and cold. It was 19 per person for salad bar, vegetable bar, 1 serving of meat and dessert (that they serve), and drink included. Price is fair value but would be a better value if the vegetable bar, which you get refills, had a better variety. The staff offered a refill on meat for 5$. You can just get salad bar, but if doing so, check the topping selection. They did have different types of salads. If we ever pass through Deland again, we will try it again for nostalgia and request the same booth(9). If we lived in Deland, maybe 2 or 3x a month, it’s not your “goto” place. But for a small lunch meeting or to take a client or friend for the first time is a neat experience. Evidently it’s the ole family home place. 100ish seats, mainly 4, tops but I’m sure they can accommodate larger parties. Again, kudos to our server and the cashier lady who told us about the history.

Best Buffett in Central Fl. Been serving excellent salad, choice of excellent beef, chicken, fish and lamb! Dessert selection is huge, pies cakes and many specials! I loved the cherry crumble pie and huge chocolate chip bread pudding. Reasonable price but expect a crowd!
