Review of Sugarfish by Sushi Nozawa

Upon entering Sugarfish by Sushi Nozawa, one is immediately enveloped in an atmosphere that balances contemporary design with a serene, understated elegance. The soft, ambient lighting paired with minimalist decor creates an inviting setting that prepares diners for a culinary journey steeped in tradition and artistry.

Service:

From the moment we were greeted by Matt, our engaging host, the warmth and professionalism of the staff set a high bar. Matt’s expertise and enthusiasm created a comforting environment, guiding us through the menu with a knowledgeable yet approachable demeanor. As our meal unfolded, we were fortunate to be attended to by Brian, whose insights into the dishes complemented the experience beautifully. He not only explained the flavors and components with precision but also infused the evening with a heartfelt passion for sushi that resonated in every bite. Sabrina, with her attentive nature, ensured our needs were anticipated and met throughout the evening, creating a seamless dining experience that felt intimate and personalized.

Cuisine:

At the heart of Sugarfish lies its dedication to sushi craftsmanship. The omakase menu is a carefully curated selection, embodying the philosophy of “trust the chef.” Each dish is a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the honed skills of the chefs in the kitchen. The sushi was impeccably fresh, with each piece telling a story—a narrative brought forth through careful sourcing and technique.

The highlight of the meal was, without a doubt, the nigiri. Each piece was executed with precision, showcasing the delicate balance between the fish and the perfectly seasoned rice. The culinary team excelled particularly with their use of seasonal ingredients; a piece of tuna nigiri was adorned with a touch of wasabi that elevated its natural flavor without overwhelming it, demonstrating a masterful understanding of balance.

While the uni—often a standout delicacy—was mentioned to lack the rich, briny taste one might expect, it was still executed with care, and the overall quality of the meal vastly overshadowed this minor detail. The other offerings were resplendent, creating a symphony of tastes that danced on the palate, leaving a lingering fondness.

Ambiance:

Sugarfish strikes a harmonious balance between vibrancy and tranquility. The open kitchen exudes a sense of transparency, where diners can witness the artistry unfolding. It invites a communal appreciation for the craft involved in creating each dish, fostering an environment that feels both upscale and welcoming.

Value:

For the quality and caliber of the experience, Sugarfish presents itself as refreshingly accessible. The pricing reflects the exceptional ingredients and skillful execution, providing substantial value for the artistry displayed within each dish.

Conclusion:

Sugarfish by Sushi Nozawa transcends the typical dining experience, instead offering a heartfelt journey through the world of sushi that marries tradition with modernity. With attentive service, a carefully crafted menu, and a beautiful ambiance, it is a cherished destination for any sushi aficionado. This restaurant captures the essence of what it means to enjoy food—through connection, experience, and, above all, love for the craft. For those who seek to indulge their senses in exceptional sushi, Sugarfish is a must-visit gem that beckons repeat visits.

Sugarfish on La Brea is the kind of place that reminds you just how good something simple can be when it’s done with absolute precision. I order delivery from here often—it’s hands down the best delivery sushi in LA, which says a lot in this town. But delivery sushi, by nature, is like watching a movie on a plane. Even when it’s good, it’s not quite the real experience.

Walking into Sugarfish resets your palate. The service is quiet, seamless, and ultra-consistent. The food comes out with that same discipline that made Sushi Nozawa a legend back in 1978—there’s nothing showy here, no truffle oil nonsense, just clean cuts of very fresh fish over perfect rice with warm vinegar tang and that melt-in-your-mouth texture. The “Trust Me” menu doesn’t try to impress—it’s not meant to—but it delivers a kind of minimalist mastery that hits every time.

This place is a reminder that basic isn’t boring. Basic is confident. Sugarfish doesn’t need to reinvent anything because they got it right a long time ago.

Got the nozawa set menu – I enjoyed it! The hand rolls were definitely my favorite. It was nice to not have to think about what to order. One thing that surprised me was that they only have sushi on the menu (no appetizers), and the selection is not huge (no tamago!!!). I’m not sure what other places in downtown LA cost, but $39 for the set felt like a good deal to me!

We love Sugarfish, particularly this location. The food is always delicious. Moreover, the service is top-shelf. My wife & i felt welcome from our first date to our anniversary meals. A special kudos to Matt. Matt went above & beyond to correct an error made on postmates… where their customer service lacked, Matt jumped right into action to help us remedy it. He was so kind & thoughtful.

WOW. Literally the best Sushi I’ve ever eaten. I’ve not been to Japan (yet), but I’ve heard that this is as close as you can get to authentic preparation without actually being there. The chef gets the fish fresh daily. But aside from that, it’s just unbelievable in every way – service, taste, quality of fish, presentation, etc.

This will be a regular stop for me when visiting LA

Definitely worth a try, they have specific set menus that honestly work very well! I would approve and this is coming from a person that has had a lot of sushi! It’s something different and it isn’t too costly either, this might be one of the best sushi places in the country. Came here on a whim and it was definitely delicious!!

The Nozawa Trust Me is absolutely incredible quality for the price you pay. Sugarfish is so, so wonderful, and my favorite sushi spot in Los Angeles. Incomparable! (Plus a fixed service charge and no tipping in a time when tipping culture has gotten completely out of control is such a welcome relief!)

I’ve had Sugarfish dine in, take out, and delivery and it just does not miss!

We came here to celebrate our friend’s birthday. We each had variations of the Trust Me menu and every bite was delicious. Plus our server, Sabrina, elevated our dining experience with her knowledge and attentiveness. Thank you for an excellent dinner.

I used to love Sugarfish but was recently surprised and now feel the opposite. The service was great. Sushi and handle however weren’t – not as well cured , tasted bland or old. They have also reduced the ratio of fish in favor for more rice – almost felt like I’m having an onigiri. I do hope they improve and bring it back to what it was.

Nice place, love the interior.
But not impressed.
The first thing I didn’t like about the place is that the waiters made me feel in a rush,to eat and leave as quick as possible.
And secondly from all the different sushi and plates I tried, only liked the hand rolls. All others were not as good as I was expecting based on the prices and reviews online.
Overall an ok experience nothing bad. But definitely if you looking to enjoy great sushi it’s not your place.
