I had a few late nights at the side project cellar during their stout week and had a craving for fried chicken. This is a fantastic restaurant. Was able to dine in and get a table very quickly. The fried chicken is fantastic and so is the mac & cheese. Will recommend this place time and time again because not only is it phenomenal fried chicken, but it is also celiac friendly. Insider tip, try the fried catfish.

If you’ve been wondering “When did Gus’s start selling fish?” let me clear that up once and for all.
About a year ago, they quietly tested fish on Fridays and Saturdays. It sold so well they said forget the weekends—run it every day. So yes, you can walk into Gus’s any day they’re open and get you some fish without waiting for the weekend.
They also tested out corn nuggets, and those made the cut too. I’ll be back soon to give those a proper taste test.
Now, the part that never changes: the service. Gus’s stays consistent—friendly, helpful, and quick. The food always matches that energy.
This trip I grabbed the fish and four tenders. The batter has that signature Gus’s kick—just enough spice to let you know it’s there, but not enough to set your mouth on fire. Crispy, flavorful, and cooked right.
If you haven’t been in a minute, go ahead and slide through. Gus’s is still doing what Gus’s does: great food, great people, and now… great fish.

Holy cow! I’ve been looking for the best Fried Chicken in STL — and Gus’s is the best I’ve tried so far! Everything was absolutely DELICIOUS. My pickup order was made super quickly, the food was hot and the staff was friendly. The Dark Meat Plate was perfect. The chicken was crispy and seasoned so well, and the sides were excellent as well. Let’s talk about those sides: sweet, tangy coleslaw and tender baked beans. OMG they were almost as good as the chicken!!

The food is 5 stars, the Service is 0 when I walked in to get my food for carry out. I went in to pick up my food at about 7pm last night on 02/14/26 the skinny chick with dreads was on her phone talking to someone on speaker looking at me going back n forth to the kitchen 5 minutes go by she still hasn’t asked me anything. As soon as a woman walks in that doesnt even get in line stands to the left of me [mind you ive already been here 5 minutes] she walks over to her first ask her what she needs. I was baffled she skipped over over me knowingly I was already there standing patiently waiting for my food I could see sitting there on the counter. Luckily the woman said “this man was here before me” or I would of said something. You need to fix this because it is not a good look. DO BETTER . Now the food was exceptional compliment to the chef the chicken is a perfect spicy, Mac n cheese was delicious and the fries were good. I would of put 5 stars if the chick wasnt such a poor worker. You cant be on your phone while youre working now I understand if she was taking an order but she clearly wasnt it was her cell phone.

Fried Chicken – 4/5 – The fried chicken was so crispy! Really liked it, but note, if you don’t like dry chicken, you won’t like it. It’s not saucy at all.
Coleslaw – 4.5/5 – loved the coleslaw, it was so creamy!
Fries – 4.5/5 – perfectly fried, they were so fresh and really good
Ambiance – 4/5 – just a casual spot for fried chicken
Service – 5/5 – my waitress was so friendly and attentive, really appreciated the good service!

I was so excited to finally taste this that they call, world famous fried chicken. Very disappointed unfortunately!! I am a conisour of fried chicken, and make the very best at home. Whenever I eat out, 95% of the time I order Fried Chicken. This chicken was spicy, when I did not order that. Is it all like that or did they mess it up? It has hardly any breading, hardly visible at all and not a very good flavor. It was crispy to the point of hard and extremely chewy. Kinda gross really. It was very overcooked (is this the norm?) I tend to think it is because it was piping hot as I went at a slower time. Honestly, I am 63 years lld and have eaten Fried Chicken all of my life, and this was one of the very worst I have ever eaten!!! Popeyes and KFC have them beat 100%. I cannot understand why people like this. Maybe they just live nearby, and are totally satisfied in the fact they are getting fried chicken at all. Slaw was very good and beans were just okay. I ordered greens as an extra side, and they were just okay too. I won’t be returning.

Gus’s is the absolute bees knees. This chicken is perfectly cooked and mouth-wateringly juicy. Crispy as the dickens. I believe they use a spicy marinade because it permeates into the meat, itself. Top 3 southern style fried chicken in STL hands down.
My only qualm is that they use cheap, low quality ranch. I counteract this shortcoming by bringing my own ranch from Wingstop which always pairs beautifully.
