Our party of six, including kids, was seated in the bar area, and unfortunately there was an overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke throughout the entire meal. It really reminded me of the days when smoking was allowed in restaurants and made it difficult to enjoy the meal.
It was also much louder in that area of the restaurant, and the music sounded like it was a broken record.
We’ve always had good experiences here otherwise and hope this is something that can be improved.
Reservations were made for a party of 20-25 in advance to celebrate birthdays for family and friends. Upon arrival 3:00 pm January 17, 2026 the manager J J stated the party room was not available? She stated the party room required a reservation along with a fee of $750.00.
The attempt was made to try and explain when the reservation was made it was not stated of a special reservation or fee. I asked for a manager after realizing the staff member was not willing to listen or assist. J J stated she was the manager and I was not going to disrespect her? I did not use profanity nor initiated a threat . My family and I reserve this same party room without a fee at least 2-3 times per year. We have made the same reservation for the last 3 years.
The staff was awesome with the exception of J J the manager. The food was great! However, J J the manager is in need of customer service training. I’m sad to say we will not dine with Sixty Six Taphouse in Winston Salem again.
What stood out most was the clear difference in how we were treated compared to white customers around us. As a mixed-race family, we left feeling singled out and unwelcome. It did not feel like an environment that was welcoming to people of all races.
Even my baby, who is normally very social and calm, seemed visibly uncomfortable. He became unusually tense and needed constant reassurance from me the entire time. As soon as we left and got into the car, he immediately calmed down, which was very unusual for him and concerning as a parent.
Additionally, my partner paid to play songs on the jukebox, and the songs he selected were in Spanish. One of the songs was turned off before it even finished, despite being paid for. This added to the overall feeling of being unwelcome.
It’s especially disappointing because the food itself was good, but the service and overall experience took away from that completely.
While writing this review, I also looked through other reviews and noticed that some other customers of color described feeling similarly unwelcome. I have never in my life been treated this way at a restaurant, and it was honestly shocking and upsetting.
This experience left a lasting negative impression, and unfortunately, I will not be returning. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and works to ensure that all families, regardless of race or background, are treated with equal respect and made to feel welcome.
