What an awesome place. We just PCSed back to Cherry Point and I’m always looking for cool places to relax with some hot tea or coffee. This place did not disappoint at all. I loved that tea pot and all the tea options they had! Definitely need to go back for some dessert. I overheard someone saying how good the cheesecake was!

“I know where we can go for lunch,” my mom said. “The Old Pinnix. It’s a Jason place.”

In my mother’s parlance, that means authenticity, local color, and food or drink that feels like you may have stumbled onto the next James Beard winner before the rest of the world does. She lives in New Bern. I don’t. But when she says something fits my taste, I pay attention.

The Old Pinnix occupies a former drugstore established around 1913 beside the railway depot, and it wears its history well. A model train rests on the shelf above the door. Old photos of the depot in its prime line the walls. Glass apothecary jars and vintage Pepsi bottles sit comfortably among board games that look like they were rescued from someone’s childhood closet.

The seating area is a mishmash of low tables, comfortable chairs and couches — the kind of place built for board games, tea, or plain old conversation, which feels like a bit of a lost art these days.

Toward the back, the bar rises from what appears to be the original pharmaceutical shelves, now repurposed to hold liquor bottles instead of tonics. Chad and Natasha worked the room with the ease of people who know their regulars by name — definitely a sign of a “Jason” place.

The drink menu leans heavily on fresh herbs, with jars full of mint, rosemary, and other greens lining the bar waiting their turn in some craft cocktail. My Bloody Mary had real heat and admirable restraint — no clutter of skewered garnishes, just clean spice, balance, and depth.

The food menu is built entirely around toast — tartines — assembled at a single station. The choice of breads reads almost like a wine list, encouraging you to think about structure and pairing.

I ordered the “Pepper Popper”: tiny red and golden biquinho peppers, arugula, and goat cheese spread on sourdough. The peppers brought just enough brightness to lift the creaminess of the cheese. The arugula added a peppery edge. The sourdough was toasted with intention — firm enough to support the toppings but still offering a proper chew.

As we paid, we debated staying for coffee or tea from the extensive list. We didn’t — which simply gives us a reason to come back.

Amazing little jewel in downtown New Bern with great service and perfectly crafted cocktails. I ordered the Havana with ham and pulled pork which was a smoky and flavorful delight. Will definitely be back.

I was in from out of town and my friend (who is a local) and I were choosing a spot for mid week lunch. We chose this place based on the ambiance from reviews and generally because it has basically perfect 5 stars. And it did not disappoint! We brought my friend’s two kids and (to be clear, while it was not busy) the kids enjoyed dancing to the music while we sat and enjoyed a drink. I can’t say enough good things about the menu. I had the Cherry Rosemary Old fashioned, my friend had the dragon fruit basil smash. Both drinks were absolutely amazing. My friend is gluten free and was able to order a gluten-free toast while I had the sourdough. We both ordered the highly recommended goat cheese, avocado, mango salsa and bacon topped toast. Overall, the entire ambiance combined with the service and the food, I really wish that this place was in my hometown so I could continue working my way through the menu. I loved that they had comfy seating options around a coffee table, tables alongside regular tables, and casual seating options with couch as well. The entire place is decorated and themed around the fact that it used to be a pharmacy. Overall, absolutely loved this place. I know I already said that but I can’t say it enough. I will definitely be back next time I’m in town! See photos for the drinks and toast ordered during our visit!

I enjoyed the look and feel of the place. The vanilla cinnamon bun latte and avocado toast (on sourdough) were amazing! Service from start to finish was great! Would definitely come back.

Ended up at The Old Pinnix twice in one weekend during a recent trip to New Bern. Highly recommend. It’s a fun place to stop by for a cocktail and light meal. We tried 6 different toasts, and while they were all delicious, the Pig and the Goat as well as the Caprese were our favorites. Also, probably had my favorite Spicy Bloody Mary from any restaurant.

Came here for the cafe vibe on a Sunday afternoon, as the restaurants in the core of downtown were either closed or too crowded.

The food menu consists of eclectic snack-sized meals. The prices are reasonable considering the size, so be prepared to order multiple items if you want a full belly. The Loaded Hummus was a unique vegetarian treat, but the Rye’d or Die Reuben Toast was the standout of my visit.

We were greeted with a warm and friendly atmosphere when we met up with friends for brunch. I highly recommend the Mediterranean toast or the avocado toast—they’re both delicious! The menu also offers a great selection of teas and adult beverages. The space is filled with natural light and is located in the charming Old Pinnex building. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal!

Huge foodie girl from Orlando, FL and the food was top notch. Open faced sandwiches with sweet & savory options. We both got savory. I asked for one typically cold to be warmed & they accommodated me. The best food I’ve had since moving to NC honestly. Tea came in a tea pot which was super cute. 10/10. Hope to be back. Only negative, paying homage to prolific Serial Killer of children with the bathroom art, like why? Gross. But aside from questionable bathroom decor, solid food.

Found this little jewel online looking for a day trip brunch place out of town, but not too far from home. (Emerald Isle). Met immediately by friendly “WELCOME IN, HAVE A SEAT WHERE YOU’D LIKE”. Almost immediately, we were brought menus on neat little wooden boards tied together with old hemp twine, fresh water, and an offer to acclimate us, as this was our first time in. The menu was large but only offered many forms of toast. Savory, sweet, salty/sweet, different culture themed toasts. (lasagna toast, gyro toast with hummus, and Tadziki, for example). Breakfast and lunch menu. It was difficult to decide, but I bet any choices we might have made, we would not have been disappointed. We chose 4 different toasts to sample. They offer many types of bread to choose from for your foundation. They have a large adult beverage & tea menu also. We chose one from each. All fresh ingredients and tea leaves were free steeped in a real tea ball and glass kettle. Accompanied with the tea was your very own tea sand ⌛️ timer, so you’ll know exactly when your fresh tea leaves have steeped to perfection.
Dessert was fresh brewed, YUMMY black, strong like an ox coffee, just the way I love it with a coffee cake and bread pudding. I will say the dessert cakes were our least favorite part of this adventure. They were tiny bit dry and bland. Unexpected as the rest of the meal was a home run. We dismissed it as possible at the end of the week dessert weekend servings. Either way, we weren’t mad at anyone. It’s totally worth the drive, and I’m surely going to be going back very soon and taking friends and family.

PS
Another perk to this place is its excellent location, old downtown close to great shops, and the Tryon palace old NC capital history and close by the water.
