I was looking for somewhere to eat while visiting the DMV area. So I found them on Google maps. When I got there I ordered the Catfish dinner with collard greens, Mac & cheese with cornbread and a side of Peach Cobbler for dessert❣️❣️❣️ It did not disappoint. The food was top shelf deliciously delicious❣️ Google maps has them rated as 4.6 somebody miscounted. Johnny Ray’s Sultry Soul Food is a 10/10. This place is Grandma Approved❣️ I will be back and bring friends with me.

The food was soo good they’d nearly sold out of everything. Literally, I got the last order of wings for the day and they were delicious! Isaiah and Beans (chef) were incredible. My family was in town from TN and we always make a point to buy-black. We stumbled upon this gym early afternoon. The food was top tier and they allowed us to stay there and eat the food fresh even though they were closing. Lol even after closing people kept coming in asking to buy whatever they had. Everything was a hit! The brand, okra, chicken wings, Po’ Boy, fish, macaroni, corn bread, yams, etc… We’ll be sure to stop by next time we’re in the DMV.

Very delicious food! We ate in and I got the fish, Mac and cheese, yams, and greens to split for me and my toddler! They didn’t have a high chair or booster seat so not really baby/toddler friendly environment (I had to hold my toddler while eating) but the food made up for it! It was very delicious and well seasoned. The fish was on the edge of too salty but altogether it was very good! My toddler ate it up! I would recommend it!

I grew up in a southern family, so when I moved to Silver Spring, I tried to find the soul food before anything else. This place serves type of food that sticks to your bones & truly feeds the soul. My group tried a variety of things.

I cannot recommend this place enough. My Granny passed a few years back, and stepping into this restaurant was like sitting at her table again. The yellow rice, the simplicity of the banana pudding, the crispiness of the okra… all of it was SO SO good. It’s on my list to come back here again soon.
I would highly recommend the fried catfish, pork chop, okra, and potato salad. Everything was amazing but those were my standout bites.
If you grew up eating banana pudding with vanilla wafers & whipped cream, this is the place to snag it up.

LISTEN! It was after Galentines, Valentines and folks just hungry for some good food day! It was 86 on the ribs, 86 on the waiting, 86 on the potato salad, 86 on the yams, Johnny Ray’s whole menu is bussin’ so you just keep orderin’ until you you get a protein and 2 sides that are not 86ed . Man the catfish, Cornbread, collard/cabbage mix, Mac and cheese, cabbage/ kielbosa and string beans was worth the wait. Listen! Johnny Ray’s Soul Food got Silver Spring on lock! You know its fresh and cooked to order because they cannot keep it in the pots. Do yourself a favor, pull up! Leave happy with whatever you end up enjoyin’ and take a breadpuddin’ to go . GREAT STAFF, CUSTOMER SERVICE TOP NOTCH, cannot wait to stop thru again!

First visit, I had the catfish sandwich with string beans. The catfish sandwich? Solid 9/10. The homemade coleslaw on it was everything—sweet, tangy, and just the right crunch. As for the string beans, they took me straight back to those old-school, first-Sunday-after-church dinners. Comfort food at its finest.
Second round, I went with the pulled chicken sandwich (8/10) and mixed greens (a mix of collards and cabbage). That sandwich was delicious, and the greens were well-seasoned, clearly made with turkey meat—not overly salty, just flavorful and soulful.
If you’re looking for that real, homestyle flavor with a modern twist, Johnny Ray’s is definitely worth checking out.

Stopped by with my family for some comfort food, and everything hit the spot! The whiting was crispy and well-seasoned, the meatloaf was hearty with delicious gravy, and the mac and cheese was a toddler-approved favorite The collard greens and candied yams were both excellent, just like the friendly service. The owner even brought over to-go boxes—but we didn’t need them because we cleaned our plates!

I was just googling spots to eat nearby and this place caught my eye. I ordered pickup as I didn’t really have time to sit down and eat. From reading the menu it reminded me of back home (North Carolina). To find GOOD country soul food, outside of my own home, in this area, is VERY VERY rare. Chile when I tell you this food is bussin! I had the whiting platter with cornbread, candied yams, and Mac n cheese. Everything was so good! I will be back for sure. I’m trying everything!
