Full of contemporary yet classic American flavors, The Graduate Homestead Room’s menu is rooted in high-quality, seasonal dishes with a heavy dose of nostalgia. Offerings feature familiar flavors combined with influences from far and wide, ensuring something for everyone on our varied menu. And since every meal is better with something to sip on, we tapped our friend and global beverage creative Bad Birdy to transform our cocktail list into a masterpiece. Think beautiful, well-balanced beverages as fun to order as they are to enjoy. (Bonus points if you can spot all four John Hughes references on the menu!)

First time visiting, but the in-laws are regulars there, they even have their own table. My father in law thought I might not like the limited menu, but I did appreciate the limited, but well prepared foods.
We started with the delicious crab cakes. Excellently prepared and presented with a remoulade garnish, radish slices and green leafs. Next was their home made Mac& Cheese made with real cheese, just like I used to make for my children. My wife had the burger with special dietary requests, which they were happy to oblige. The fries came out hot and fresh. The menu served the needs of my vegan mother in law as well. Sliced crispy crusted bread, lightly toasted was delicious too.
The restaurant located in the Hilton Hotel has gone through numerous changes and styles over the years. Hopefully it has found the proper mix of foods and the quality stays high, so this one lasts for a long time. Its design is of elegance with leather and dark wood paneling, plus fireplaces. The bar is dark and comfortable to enjoy a leisure relaxing drink and a supper.

Bummer first time experience. Sunday, 3/1/26 dinner service. Ordered a Little Gem salad and iced tea to start. Iced tea was quality, freshly brewed, flavorful. Appreciated the paper straw. After several minutes we were told the Little Gem was not available. A few minutes later my date picked a specialty cocktail off the menu. Server came back several minutes later to inform us they were out of that particular cocktail. She then ordered The Butterfly Effect as an alternate drink. It took too long to get this replacement cocktail. We both agreed there was something really off about The Butterfly Effect. Was it a missing ingredient? A ton of sour mix as a cover up? Definitely something. Tasted like someone threw it together at a busy sports bar that serves burgers. We mentioned this to the server but got no real response. Got a “Caesar” instead of the “Little Gem,” which was perfect. For a main we shared the “Steak and Fries,” and the “Brussel Sprouts.” The steak we ordered (we weren’t informed of the cut when we placed the order- I just wanted steak and didn’t really care what cut came out- I was curious to see what arrived) was a sliced sirloin served lukewarm with steak fries and ketchup. The beef was almost cold to the touch, definitely had sat too long, while the fries were so hot they needed to cool a bit. Steak flavor was fine, however, we weren’t told this was a sliced steak. The steak fries were crispy and flavorful. The side of Brussel Sprouts were tasty, but literally drowning in sauce and overpowering in sweetness- just too much. (We chose not finish them). Disappointed, no dessert, we paid the check. My date and I have both worked years in high-end hospitality, so I figured I’d let management know they were slipping with a phone call. Heard back from F&B manager Madison, who politely apologized and offered a free dessert on our next visit. I felt insulted but said thank you. Once off the phone, I did the “math” in my head:
Our service and dining experience was amateurish and significantly flawed. A single dessert was offered in exchange for this bad overall experience with the following costs: Steak and Fries $38, Brussel Sprouts $12, Butterfly Effect cocktail $16, service experience-flawed (priceless?), dining experience-flawed (priceless?). Feel like this place owed me a solid if they wanted a return guest, more of an “Exceed the guest’s expectations” deal vs. “Insult the guest with the bare minimum phone call and cheapskate offer.” I don’t particularly enjoy paying for a restaurant’s mistakes, as there are too many other restaurants out there which don’t drop the ball. So..

**Know your 86 list beforehand- for food and drinks, so you can properly inform guests BEFORE they order something you’re out of!

**Serve these items correctly or not at all.

**Inform guests which cut of beef you’re serving as part of your opening conversation, and whether or not it is sliced (instead of never bringing it up)

**Pick up the pace on service all around (although the restaurant was quiet, we felt like we waited too long for several things, mainly drinks because of the 86 issues- but also food because of the 86’d salad issue). Slow service became much slower with the above thrown in the mix…

**Finally, and probably most importantly, don’t be a cheapskate company! Place had such a magical atmosphere, we were excited to be there, but instead I felt Iike I wasted $135 including tip. We could have had a better meal at a dozen other nearby places. Our choices for the evening were: The Barn, The Burl, or Homestead. We chose you folks and were really disappointed. Maybe a fully-staffed busy brunch is a different story here. As an industry pro I get slow, understaffed evenings on a Sunday night, when GM’s and the chef are off, when inventory is typically at it’s lowest, but still, there’s a way to be on top of that in order to operate at the highest level possible. No excuses!

Dec 24th, dinner. My wife and I took her dad out for dinner on 24th, our kitchen is getting remodelled. The homestead room provides a nostalgic atmosphere, somewhat darker style, reminds me of New England. We had a reservation but easily found a booth and enjoyed a quiet meal. It was fairly quiet despite a few guests and that made it even more pleasant. We started with Soft Pretzels and Mushroom Toasts, for entrees I had Steak Fries, my wife had a white Market Fish and her dad had Burger Sliders. The fries were rotary sliced and crisp, the medium meat was medium as ordered and I liked it. My wife’s white fish was tender flaky as it should be. The food came nicely paced and gave us plenty of time to enjoy ourselves without the usual stress when everything comes at once. The waitress did a great job. For desert I got an espresso and we shared a Warm Apple Crisp. We liked it.

Came here for dinner. We arrived early so the dinner service hadn’t started yet. Had a couple of drinks in their bar area which was nice and cozy. We eventually made our way to the dining area. Sat in a booth by the fire. Service was very good, friendly. Food was filling, although I would’ve liked it to be more flavorful. Overall, a neat spot to visit, but would’ve liked more from the food.

I had such a great experience and was pleasantly surprised by this quaint little restaurant in a quaint hotel during my daughters’ accepted student visit in northwestern. Their brussel sprouts and chicken were amazing. The chicken was pretty tender. The burger was pretty good too but just tasted like a regular burger. I definitely recommend the chicken and brussel sprouts. Their cocktails are also amazing.

The Homestead is a dining area from breakfast to evening and then turns into a quaint cocktail lounge with specialty drinks and beers. Our mixologist was skilled and created several wonderful concoctions. The evening’s were lively and we met some new friends to hang out with for the evening. We will return for more!! Our two favorite breakfasts were the Avocado Toast and the Brioche French Toast. Super tasty, but they do come with the standard Chicago city price. All in all, a wonderful place to stay and spend a holiday weekend.

What a hidden gem. The food was outstanding – the flavors were well balanced, perfect portion sizes, and detail was apparent from everything from texture to plating. The ambiance is beautiful, perfect for a classy evening out. Highly recommend the Chicken Roulade – it blew me out of this world, but everything my table had: Gem Lettuce Salad, Crab Cakes, Cocktails, Mushroom Entree, Farro and Root Salad, Potato Puree, and Chocolate Berry Mousse was fantastic. I’m ecstatic Evanston finally has a wonderful restaurant – I will be returning eagerly!

While I stayed the graduate hotel for 17 days, one of the most satisfying features was the quality of breakfasts from here.
All menu was great. Especially my favorite were the Buttermilk pancakes and the Avocado toasts. I hope to visit here again.

If you’re looking for a fine dining experience rooted in high-quality, seasonal dishes with a heavy dose of masculine nostalgia, this place is for you! The befittingly named Graduate Homestead serves up a fusion of classic and contemporary American cuisine in a very high end yet cozy atmosphere. The balance of salt, fat, acid and heat of the chicken roulade was expertly executed. The burger was medium well crafted with such care it retained its moisture and was topped with the least gamey thick cut bacon I’ve tasted. Reservations aren’t difficult to come by, valet and street parking are available, seating is prompt, service is attentive without being overbearing, plus the kitchen sets a nice pace so you can be comfortably coursed out all the way to desert. The location is perfectly nestled inside Evanston’s, The Graduate Hotel, on a beautiful and quiet section of Hinman Avenue. This place lives up to the hype and goes beyond it. Graduate Homestead won’t disappoint whether you’re already accustomed to American fine dining or looking for somewhere to begin your culinary adventures. Many compliments to the entire team!
