I have been coming to this wonderful bakery for many years. The bakery closes for the season on the last weekend of September.
Yesterday I decided to take the 2 hour round trip to go to my favorite bakery and purchase the best crumb buns ever. I took my crumb buns with my coffee to the beach. Couldn’t wait. I took my first bite but wasn’t impressed. I took a second bite only to be disappointed. The crumb bun was average at best. No distinguishing flavor or very large crumbs. I hope this was the exception to the rule. So many businesses take short cuts. Now I have to wait until spring to have my favorite crumb bun again. Hopefully, it is once again my favorite and what I ate yesterday was not the new norm. Last but not least, the buns are noticeably smaller in size.

2024 UPDATE:
Colonial Bakery remains the entire family’s #1 MUST STOP spot in Lavalette! We hit them up the first morning we arrive and crave their cinnamon bread in between visits. Not sure if it’s new but we tried the Chocolate Claw this year. It’s pretty much heaven in a pastry. A croissant cookie with chocolates drizzled on top.

We have yet to meet a pastry here we find to be just okay. It’s all mouthwatering!!

If it’s busy, walk in and grab a ticket and patiently wait to place your order. They move quickly and no matter how long, it’s worth the wait!!

Plan to buy pretty much one of everything!!! We brought home donuts, cinnamon rolls, cinnamon bread, French bread….the French bread was consumed too quickly to snap a pic!! We sampled the Lemon Blueberry pound cake. It all is beyond delicious!!!!! Worth the trip and the wait!!

Best crumb cake in town. Love the ninja turtle cookies and corn muffins. I stop here every time I’m at the shore.

One of the best bakeries by the beach. We’ve been coming here for years and everything is top notch. The ladies who are working are so caring, patient with the crowds and just a joy in the morning.

Recently I made an error in my online ordering for my son’s birthday and Maeve went above and beyond to help me fix it. Love this bakery so much!

Got a Birthday Cake here for my favorite person…it was a smash hit! Everybody loved it and it made the party SO SPECIAL!
Always plenty of nice kids onboard on their summer break to help you and although there is a line it always goes quick due to their efficiency! I always go back there, it makes the summer feel like summer!

We really enjoyed their jelly donuts. Those were fresh.

The chocolate glazed donut was stale, so it’s a kind of a hit or miss in the freshness of the baked goods.

The order system is confusing and there are no written direction on where to go anywhere. I had to walk around asking people where to order until I figured it out. Super old school.

$10 minimum on cards.

Beyond thankful for this place! My mom and I were visiting from Chicago so I had no idea where to go for a surprise birthday cake for her. I took a chance on Colonial Bakery and I’m so glad I did. I ordered online in advance and picked up first thing after eight in the morning. The staff was super friendly and patient during my pick up (as I grabbed some other items too). Not only did the cake turn out beautiful, it tastes amazing! The fudge icing is delicious, the cake was moist and has remained so for days after and the vanilla custard/strawberry filling is divine! Probably one of my most favorite cakes I’ve ever had. We have one piece left and I’m ready to fight for it 🙂 Thanks Colonial Bakery!

I have been going to Colonial Bakery ever since I was a child and now I am bringing my own baby! No matter what you buy it is always perfectly fresh with amazing flavor. Personally, the powdered crumb cake and the crab cookies are the best! 1000% recommend this place!

Staff was great but baked goods were far from impressive. Stay away from ordering a cookie cake. The bakery handled it the right way but nevertheless overcooked dry cake.

Adorable little bakery with such an amazing assortment of baked goods. We got a piece of the crumb cake and it was delicious. There are many different kinds of the crumb desserts too. Would definitely visit again when I’m in Lavallette again.
