We appreciate small startup restaurants with no TVs to distract you from conversation. We had the place to ourselves, but the staff was friendly and attentive. There was a lot of food for what we ordered also. Fajitas were not overly flavored but still very good. Everything was fresh. There was enough for two of us to eat and still take food home for another meal.
There are a lot of mixed reviews but I feel like from our experience the naysayers are expecting something unrealistic. The store was very clean and well decorated, and the food was very good and the volume to price was very good. We would certainly come again.

We enjoyed the food and drinks. The chimichanga and beef taco were great. The burria tacos are awesome and my son gets them every time. My wife loves the queso. Everything is very affordable.

We got drinks too. The wife said the margarita was delicious. On Fridays all bottled beer is $3.50.

El TECATE Mexican Restaurant is hands down one of our favorite spots! From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is upbeat, fun, and welcoming. It has that perfect lively vibe without feeling overwhelming — great for family dinners or grabbing food with friends.

The service is outstanding. The staff is friendly, attentive, and always makes sure drinks stay full and everything comes out quickly. You can tell they genuinely care about their customers and take pride in what they do.

The food is always fresh and full of flavor. Everything tastes like it’s made to order — hot, seasoned perfectly, and beautifully presented. Whether it’s the tacos, fajitas, or their homemade salsa and chips, you can’t go wrong.

If you’re looking for great Mexican food, awesome service, and a fun environment, El TECATE is definitely the place to go. We’ll absolutely be back!

This was the first in my review of Mexican restaurants in the Charlotte (NC) area. Stopped in for lunch after dropping a package at the adjoining UPS store. The restaurant was brightly decorated and well lit with plenty of of natural sunlight. It was very clean. It is a small location in a strip mall featuring about ten tables and booths. My server confessed she did not understand or speak much English. A manager took over to resolve an incorrect food order. I ordered a taco combination. Disappointing result. Two miniature corn patties the size of my palm laying flat on the plate. One with a small amount of chicken ‘crumbles’. The other with ground beef that required no chewing. Each came with a dab of avocado and some pico. The rice and beans were like those you would expect in a high school cafeteria, formulaic and bland. The meal was about $15.00. Completely forgettable. Adios El Tecate!

Went in to eat dinner 2-8-26. Restsrant was empty around 6:30/7:00 pm. A lady came up from the back and greeted us pleasantly. I asked if they were open just to confirm, and she said yes. I ask if their food was good and she paused and got quiet for a couple of seconds. Then she replied that they get “mixed reviews ” on the food. I was fully thinking she would say “yes, it’s good/great” or similar. Reading some of the reviews afterwards,I guess there is something to be said for her being honest. We left and went to EL Rey down the road.

The food is amazing, especially the “torta asada” that is a 20/10 if you haven’t tried it then you don’t have good taste, also it depends on how you order the food. If you know how to order then you will get what you asked for, well done, medium rare or rare just depends on how you order. But I would recommend this place 100% and the waitress Yareli did a phenomenal job.

Very disappointed in this one. The only thing good about this experience, was leaving .

The man that greeted me seemed friendly enough. He took my order, it was a combo platter and a beer.

I smiled, ordered, and said sin “cebollas, por favor,” which means no onions in Spanish,

He nodded his head, and said OK amigo. And left.

A short while later, he returned with the beer, and I asked for a glass. again, he acknowledged me, and left.

Time passed, no meal, no glass. I flagged the man down, and asked for a glass, and he finally brought it to me.

Sometime later, the underwhelming meal arrived. The taco had onions in it, and lots of them! More onions than the small portion of meat.

I flagged to the man down again, and told him that there were onions in my taco. He responded by asking me why I did not ask for no onions, and said that I could take them off if I wanted to, or he could go in the back and take them out for me.

I looked at the man and told him to forget it. He walked away, and I took the taco off my plate and set it on the table. I had no intention of eating a taco with onions, when I don’t like onions.

About a minute later, he came back and he said, “amigo, let me fix it for you,” and took away the taco.

He was true to his word, he brought back the same taco, and pulled the onions out with his hands, but missed some.

I left the taco on the table, and finished my beer.

When I was done, I looked over, and the man was playing on his phone at the bar. After about five minutes, I went over and asked if he could please ring me out.

When he handed me the bill to sign, he hoveredover me, seeing what I wrote for a tip. I made it a point, very poetically and slow slowly, and clearly, to write a 0 on the tip line.

If you are looking for an example of virtually everything wrong with a bad restaurant, this would be it!
