My friend and I had the pleasure of dining at your establishment yesterday evening. We had a wonderful dinner with exceptional service to celebrate my birthday. Thank you for the birthday cake slice, for personally checking in with the patrons, and for a delicious and crispy schnitzel that I finished in one sitting! A first! Thank you for keeping this establishment open and providing wonderful meals and service at a great price. We will be back for sure!

I’m happy that this place reopened because I was sad when the Black Forest Inn was closed.
The decor still look similar, the waitresses still wear the traditional dirndl, which is a good thing as it differentiates from other restaurants, and the menu is still similar.
Main entrée comes with bread and butter (2 slices of bread for one person) and a meatball soup or salad as an appetizer.
The reasons for a 4 stars instead of 5 stars is mainly because the customer service and sauerkraut weren’t as good as back then. Back then, it used to feel warm, welcoming, and the waitresses were very sociable and friendly (I used to have good conversations with the waitresses and they’re happy to talk). On my latest visit, even though the waitress was nice enough, it feels more dismissive as they seem more focused on chatting among themselves than checking on customers, making sure customers are happy and hardly smile (they looked stressed out). When I got the entrée (the black forest plate), the waitress was very dry when she asked if I need anything, almost like she hates her job, and the main waitress didn’t ask how my meal was, which is standard practice for the waiting staff. The sauerkraut tasted very sour (heavy in vinegar), but aside from that, the portions and prices are still good. I skipped dessert as I didn’t feel like it after what happened (lackluster customer service was a turn off).
I would still like to return, but the experience was definitely not as good as back then.
There is paid parking and street parking, in case anyone drive there.

If you aren’t open until 9pm, then why does google say you are.
Came all the way down here and the door was locked at 8:30pm.
I literally get here at 8:31. I called them and tell them this and they’re like all the restaurant is open till nine but the kitchen closes at 8:30. How is the restaurant open until nine if I can’t open the door and the door is locked. This makes no logical sense whatsoever. Also, why are they posting hours at 9 PM and you can clearly see also Then it says 9 PM on their door.

Let me state I’ve been here many times since I moved here, and never had this issue with the far superior previous owners!

My parents, sister and I went to Das Schnitzelhaus and throughly enjoyed our meal. The pretzels and potato pancakes were hot, fresh and loaded with flavour. I got the Hunter’s Chicken Schnitzel – so tasty! My mom and sister opted for the Jaeger Schnitzel and they loved it as well. The potato soup is so good! Everything was delicious. The meals were so large, we all had takeout containers for home. Just as tasty the next day. Top service and atmosphere. My parents, native Germans, give Das Schnitzelhaus 5 stars!

Excellent restaurant with some great traditional German dishes. Really glad the new owners reopened this restaurant and stuck to its tradition. Recommend the Schnitzels and goulash. The German beer on tap is also excellent, try the Dunkel dark wheat beer.
The apps are also worth considering, and cocktails seem creative. Though I would recommend beer first for something great, the White wine Riesling blend is an authentic option.
Service was quite busy but clearly working very hard and very friendly.
I did not try a dessert, but I hope they consider adding one or two more traditional ones such as strudel, pfannkuchen or kaiserschmarm (maybe with unique sauces/syrups).

This is the old Black Forest Inn. Nothing has really changed when ownership changed. Same classic dishes are available. I’ll say the quality has taken a slight hit, but still good. Service was excellent. Staff are very well trained and efficient. Love the atmosphere that hasn’t changed in decades. Great value.

Highly recommended for those seeking the authentic experience. Spaetzel, Schnitzel and the spratzels were absolutely amazing. Also value for money as well because the portion sizes are big. Das Schnitzelhaus has a basic, almost bare-bones feel – like a German Stube, but stripped of the warmth and cozy knick-knacks that usually define such places. I stopped in for a beer, only to find a very limited selection of just three options. The layout features two separate rooms – one for dining and one for drinking – but this rigid division meant I was “parked” in an empty, lifeless area simply because I didn’t order food. It was an odd and unwelcoming experience, making me feel isolated rather than comfortable.
The decor doesn’t help either. Wooden cuckoo clocks line the walls, but they’re covered in dust and none of them show the correct time. They’re either broken or no one bothers to wind them – a detail that perfectly sums up the overall vibe of neglect.
This place could have potential, but it feels like laziness has won here. There’s none of the welcoming atmosphere you’d expect from a real German Stube. Sadly, my experience was pretty disappointing.

Unfortunately I wanted to love this place as I’ve been dying to go back since I was younger and had fond memories of the food and atmosphere.
“Das Schnitzelhaus“ carries none of the spirit, flavour or ambience of what used to be Black Forest Inn. The body of the restaurant is still there but devoid of what made it a Hamilton staple for many growing up and going with their families.
From the start it was lacklustre. Upon arriving two of our party were told they couldn’t be shown to their table until the rest of the party arrived. This is the first time I’ve ever heard of a restaurant doing this, considering the restaurant was fairly empty(it filled up as we were starting our meal) it seemed nonsensical to not let our party sit as the table was ready and it was five minutes past our reservation time when the rest of our party showed up.
The owner or GM, whomever it was, was condescending and irate for us just occupying the two seats he allowed us to sit at while we waited past our reservation time. It gave the impression he had better things to do than have to deal with customers.
We were seated and waited for our server who was well versed with the menu and specials. The only hiccup came when we were brought glasses of wine and she wasn’t sure which was which. A simple taste test between the wine drinkers rectified that situation. Accidents happen and she was playfully admitting her mistake.
The food came and unfortunately that was the bow on the let downs for the evening. The potato pancakes were very greasy and not very seasoned. The rouladen was very dry and lacking flavour from the assortments inside it. Nothing seemed to “pop” food wise. The desserts as others have pointed out seem store bought, save the money and stop at Metro on your way home. It’s probably the same cake there.
Save the time and let down, head to Kitchener/Waterloo for authentic German cuisine.
