Food was surprisingly delicious. Me and my family just wanted to have a quick bite to eat before heading off to NYC. Being Filipinos, we were drawn to New Nelly’s because of the rice in their menu. We honestly had zero expectations, but man! It was a treat! Their Onions and Steak with their fried rice was heaven for my 7-year old. It had some familiar flavors similar to Filipino dishes but with a very unique twist to it. We definitely recommend trying out New Nelly’s on your next trip to Poughkeepsie.

Wow. I’m not sure what that was that I just ate but not Dominican food. I am spoiled and live in Brooklyn, so this was disappointing. I paid $15 for mushy and dry goat that was cut into huge hunks. Taste was just ok. Overall, I was left disappointed. I like to support small restaurants, but only with merit. What bothered me most was that when I ordered, she asked,’Do you want beans?’ I replied ‘of course’ because any self-respecting Latin restaurant INCLUDES beans as well as the rice and main item. In NYC, they also include a couple of slices of fried plantain. Not only did I end up paying 1$ more for the beans without being warned of the extra cost, but the plantains were $5 on the menu. I would have received an amazing rice goat & plantains for $12.99 max in the big expensive city, and it would include a drink. At some point, it’s not really worth stating open.

we ordered a pickup meal to be ready at 6:05pm and they were late with their pickup time had to wait an additional 15 minutes for 4 empanadas. then our whole order was wrong and the chicken was so gross and had so much tendons you couldn’t eat it. i called the lady who rang us up asking for a refund and she said no and to come back in 5 minutes for new food. we went back in and asked for a refund again and the lady said we needed to tell her sooner even though we asked on the phone and was told no. AND she made us wait an additional 10 minutes in the store again waiting for food. she was rude to us and didn’t care about everything being wrong just didn’t want to lose money. will never come back to this place to eat again and i recommend going to twisted soul across the street.

This Nelly’s is not affiliated with the one on Main St in City of Poughkeepsie or the Newburgh one on Plank Rd. It is the same owner as the New Paltz location. There is usually two ppl here, one in kitchen and one serving. The steam table is clean and shielded with glass. The service isn’t the friendliest. The food is kinda bland and sometimes too salty. The rice needs more seasonings, and all the protein needs less salt. The pasteles were extremely bland. She did make me fresh maduros (sweet plantains) though. The cooler that holds the drinks is on the highest temperature so all the drinks were frozen. I stopped elsewhere for my drink. A small tin is $10. You get your choice of bland rice with one meat (ox tails, goat, chicken, steak, or pernil). Bananas are extra. Rice has no olives, potatoes, or salsicha. It’s either white rice or yellow rice with gandules. No yuca either. They also participate in GrubHub. Definitely not the flavors of a Puerto Rican cuchifrito.

Yo, it ain’t bad! if you want fast Dominican food, this spot holds it down. Food’s got flavor, but everything’s a little too salty, like someone’s mad in the kitchen.

My main issue? They pile on the rice like it’s a rice donation drive, but the meat? Forget it. Tiny portions—especially with oxtail or goat. You end up digging through gravy and bones like you’re on a treasure hunt.

And the prices? Yeah, I get it!! it’s probably ’cause the college is right there. But charging like you’re dining at a luxury spot for a takeout plate? Nah.

Don’t hit me with all that rice like I came here for a starch coma.

New Nelly’s is my go-to spot when I’m in a bind. Great food quality all the time. If I ever have had an issue, I’ve addressed it and management was helpful and chill about it. The hostess is very cool and a great conversationalist.

The food was delicious, the service was ok. The person behind the counter was attentive, but gave me the feeling like he wanted me to hurry up and order my food. He was friendly and he didn’t rush me. He was sitting at a table when we came in, on his phone. And I think he wanted to go back to what he was watching on his phone, and he did when he finished taking our order. The place needs updating a fresh coat of paint or something. The other person there was washing the floors while we were eating and that was kinda like not good. I don’t want to see or smell a dirty mop while I’m eating. The price seemed a little high for what we ordered. Normally a plate of food at a take out place for two, use to be under $25.00 -$40.00 so when he said $40.00. I had to look at the menu to make sure. The lunch prices were slightly less. But it was after 1:00 pm so he charged like it was dinner price. I wasn’t bad. I just wasn’t expecting to go to lunch with the helper and pay $40.00. I would recommend this place to people, but I will let them know it’s not a average lunch spot price.
