Our party of 3 attended afternoon tea for the first time. The Townsend Hotel is beautiful, welcoming and clean. The holiday decor and fireplaces provide a warm and romantic ambience.
I had high hopes for the experience given the Townsends reputation and the 65$ price tag however I don’t intend to return nor would I recommend to others.
While the experience sounded lovely the execution is quite lacking. Afternoon Tea seems like an afterthought. It is set up just outside the main lobby in a space that also feels like it was designed to be a lobby. During our experience there was quite a bit of foot traffic coming thru so get to event spaces or other parts of the building via a back elevator. There were 2 staff members tending to the needs of the tables and therefore no one available to greet you. I had to approach one of the two employees to figure out the seating situation (I watched as several other parties were equally confused on where to go/what to do). Once sat the two attendants tended to us promptly and ensured our tea and water glasses were full. Lastly the food tray was mediocre but I did leave full.

It was not a great experience. They only offer one type of vegetarian sandwich. Food was mediocre and the bread was stale. Tea was Luke warm and they only offered earl gray, English breakfast and raspberry.

Service was awful. Our young server did not know the menu or options and the the cook came from the kitchen to demand to know if I had an allergy or simply didn’t like meat?!?

If you’ve gone to an upscale tea like the Drake Hotel in chicago, don’t expect the same here!

Not at all worth the price. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend it even if it was half the price, it simply wasn’t a great or pleasant experience

The service was good, and while I did like it overall I did not feel it was worth the $65 price tag. The tea was not held in a restaurant but in an offshoot of their lobby by the elevators, that they refer to as a tea lobby, so hotel guests not attending occasionally passed by. I don’t mind paying for high quality experiences. I just didn’t find this one particularly great.

Fantastic service. From the moment you enter The Townsend you feel like you are the only guest. Helpful, friendly staff. Gorgeous lobby leading into a spectacular ballroom. Attended a fundraiser and the ballroom setup was amazing.

Got the “high tea” to go. It was absolutely lovely and delicious. Several sandwiches, far more than enough. Pretty little desserts, large fluffy scones and all the accoutrements were included. Unfortunately, I dropped it, taking it out of my car. So a few little sweets got broken, but they were still yummy. Unfortunately, I only had the unopened pic.

Really disappointing experience for the price. Food was fine, but nothing special. Service was mediocre. Atmosphere was surprisingly unpleasant. Seated in a side room at a table up against the wall by the kitchen, so close to other tables that when people were seated at them, we couldn’t get up to leave without them having to get up to let us out. I was expecting so much more with it being The Townsend.

Townsend used to be a staple for afternoon tea in mid-west. I am an avid fan of afternoon tea and used to go Townsend regularly. Over time, the experience started to decline. First they got rid of their tea director, then changed the furnishings which really affected the experience, then during Covid they really declined on presentation and quality of care, stale scones, dried up lemon curd, store bought jams in their store bought mini jars, waiters who had no clue on how to serve afternoon tea … but the service (respect and care) and accommodation was at least still good until their latest changes starting April 2024. They now no longer even accommodate vegetarians?! For $65/person?!! I mean, all they did and still need to do is to give vegetarians more of the veggie sandwiches instead of the meat ones. The price is still the same and there are no special preparations. In short, it makes great business sense with no additional effort but they rather chose to exclude many of their previous and any new vegetarian customers. I tried to work with the Rugby Grille restaurant manager, tried to convince them to go back to the old quality of care and accommodations and although the manager there agreed with me that the decision to not accommodate vegetarians for afternoon tea makes no sense, she said that the chef no longer wants to accommodate “special diets”?!! Why is the chef even the decision maker here specially when he/she is not really doing anything different or special for vegetarians ? I was even promised by the restaurant director in March that the changes coming in April will be definitely for the better, and I did mention to him that I was a pescatarian, however even if they improved on some things (yet to be assessed ), by excluding vegetarians, they ruined it for many including myself. I am very sorry as Townsend was a staple for me. It is sad to see horrible business decisions ruin a great experience and place. Those afternoon teas also made Townsend a lot more recognized as a boutique hotel so the more they go cheap and restrictive on that, the more it reflects on the hotel. I hope the owner reads this. I only write this out of care for a great location in metro Detroit.

The service was good, food was ok, price was too high. The atmosphere was awful! A janitor walks by with a bag of garbage, guests are coming off the elevator (the tea room was basically an elevator lobby), a film crew coming by every 5 minutes with their equipment. It was NOT the relaxing, refined environment we were hoping for. It was busy with staff, crew and hotel guests coming and going.

Service was great, food not so much. I would have liked to have a pot of tea at the table instead of having to wait for the staff to come bring it to us every time. I would have liked to be able to pick which sandwiches I wanted as I didn’t care for all of the sandwiches they served. Would have liked to pick my desserts. The ones served were ok but not what I was expecting. Probably won’t be going back.

If you said I would have afternoon tea I would tell you ‘no way”. If you said I would also love it, I would think you were dropped on your head. But I did. Awesome treatment. Delicious tea. Fine china cuos, tea pot, … they check on you and pour… I will be back (omg, I just admitted that!!)
