We stopped here as a treat to ourselves on a random Thursday and what a treat it was.
We ordered drinks that were delicious.
We had the best truffle fries we’ve experienced in the area.
She had rack of lamb which is 1) hard to find around here and 2) perfection at this restaurant.
He had the filet mignon with the crusted blue cheese that was prepared perfectly to order. He grew up raising beef and is hard to impress with a steak – and he was tonight.
The garlic bordelaise is to die for – she even used some on her lamb.
Blood orange cheesecake… We didn’t know what to expect, but we were blown away. We said we would come for just dessert and drinks sometime.

The hostess greeted us immediately, was nice, and accommodated our seating request of a booth. Jess was our server. She was professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. His water glass was never empty; filled by someone else equally as friendly. The bartender (Jacob) even stopped by to check to make sure we were satisfied.
We found out that we were lucky enough that the Executive Chef prepared at least one of our meals and he did not disappoint.

We’re going back for brunch on Saturday.

Jacob was our server and bartender this morning for brunch.
While wearing both hats he served a large party of 8, another party of 4, and us (2) with only minimal help from the kitchen. We didn’t feel ignored at all. Despite us being clear that we completely understood how understaffed he probably felt, he was gracious regarding our patience.
It’s hard to say which was better this morning: the service, the drinks, or the food.
We tried all of the brunch cocktails and none of them were disappointing. The pineapple and Malibu drink that comes in a mule mug was by far the best though.
She ordered the brulee French toast. We can’t even describe how amazing this dish was. There’s a lot of ingredients and flavors, but they all compliment each other perfectly. You get enough French toast for two people.
He had the smothered hangover burger. Again… so many flavors that all hit differently but go together better than we can describe.
The quality in ingredients for both of these dishes (and other meals we’ve enjoyed) shines through in the final product.
The wait staff take pride in their service.
The kitchen staff obviously puts everything into each plate that goes out the door.
For a nice dinner out or a quality fancy brunch, CHAR Grillhouse is now local our go-to.

We came down for breakfast and found ourselves alone in this beautiful restaurant. Jess was in duty, and took great care of us. I had the buttermilk chicken and cheddar waffles with potatoes, and my husband enjoyed the creme brule french toast. He said it was phenomenal, and mentioned it several times during the rest of the day. It is always a pleasure to get food made by a chef and team who love what they do. You can taste the difference.

I was excited to try this place out, after staying in the hotel a few times and never having the chance.

Initial impressions:
The menu, a piece of printer paper, had an assortment of options that sounded decent, but most of the entrees had too much going on, like the chef is trying too hard to be experimental. The chef’s name was the largest part of the menu.

Food:
I ordered the short rib, and it was honestly quite bad. The cut of meat didnt seem like actual short rib, more like chuck. It had no actual flavor, other than the glaze on it, which was really tangy. It completely masked the meat. I think if it was cooked in it, rather than slathered on top, it would’ve been better. The grits were a soupy, flavorless slop. My favorite part was the carrots, which were still drenched in oil.

We had the poached pear flatbread, and didn’t find any actual pear on it – rather a few pieces of crispy prosciutto and a lot of gorgonzola with a glaze.

My partner had the mushroom risotto. It had a nice chunk of lions mane on it, but other than that no real mushroom flavor or chunks of mushrooms in the risotto. On top of that, it was super salty and he couldn’t finish it.

Service:
The server was great. Easily the most redeeming part of the whole thing, although everything took awhile to come out.

Atmosphere:
We were sat in the extra room. It was super quiet in there, as it seems there’s no speakers for the music to pipe in there. It made it feel a little awkward. It was nicely decorated, and great smells from the kitchen.

Overall:
The food wouldn’t be nearly as insulting and this review would look a lot different if it was more appropriately priced. If you’re going to charge steep prices, then at least use a thicker menu paper or put it on a clipboard. It overall felt like a cash-grab. I honestly wish I would’ve went somewhere else. I have no problem paying for a good meal, but this wasn’t that.

Easter Brunch at Char Grillhouse

This year we opted to do a brunch after church with just the two of us and noticed Char had a four course meal! We started off with a Bloody Mary and blackberry bramble for drinks. Definitely an excellent Bloody Mary. We shared the focaccia bread basket to start. The bread was a little gooey and dense but the garlic butter was delicious. For our second course we both got Caesar salads which were good but the crutons were a bit too hard. The main course for me was the Denver omelette with Parmesan potatoes and Tyler got the steak and eggs. The omelette had this amazing smoked pulled pork and it was awesome! The steak was good too. Finally, we had the lemon curd and carrot cake trifle for dessert. Both were good and unique.

Overall, a good brunch! Char usually is a hit and miss every time with a few standout dishes and a few flops. Our waitress was very sweet even though the kitchen messed up two of our dishes but it was worth experiencing and we would certainly go back

We are so happy to have CHAR in town. This has become our go to restaurant and it never disappoints. Everything we’ve gotten has been phenomenal. The French onion soup is so good that it would be on my husband’s last meal list, which says something. The service is great and they are always attentive. Keep crushing it!!

FYI: One note is that the food coming out can take a bit longer, so your overall dinner service will take 1.5 hours or so.

The food was just what we were looking for: a chef created menu with local ingredients that shine due to how the flavors are used together. The pear and goat cheese flatbread was phenomenal, as well as the brussels sprouts with orange miso vinaigrette, slab bacon, and rutabaga. Jess took great care of us, anticipating our needs, and other staff helped as well. Highly recommend for a date night.

Our server Jess was excellent, however we were pretty disappointed in the rest of the experience. We both ordered medium well steaks and they came RARE, and the steak prices on the menu did not reflect the prices on the bill which were a bit higher ($60 vs $68, and $48 vs $54). My fiancée also ordered a side of asparagus which ended up being an underwhelming 3 pieces. I wouldn’t mind paying more for higher quality, and the food was good, however the quality was not in my opinion worth the higher cost.

I was excited to try this place out for the first time despite the prices on the menu. It was girls’ night out at the Grand Theater and we agreed to dine close by before heading over. Disappointed is an understatement.

There were barely any guests, so we did get our food quickly. Although our server was a nice, young kid, he had the memory of a goldfish. He came to our table twice to as us: how are the first few bites? As he approached to fill my friend’s water glass, I took my last few sips to have him fill mine too. He cluelessly just walked away. He didn’t know what types of vodka were available or what types of juice. I’ve made better drinks at home. I will admit, my girlfriends were pleased with their meals (one had the NY Strip and the other Ale-Braised Beef Short Rib). And the presentation of all dishes was exceptional. But my Scallop Wild Mushroom Risotto was gross. The risotto tasted old and the mushrooms were slimy (reminded me of the texture of boiled okra). Compared to the same dish at Ciao, this dish left much to be desired.

Lastly, for such a classy place, I’d expect the host to acknowledge not only the guests coming in, but those leaving as well. This lad was perched on a stool behind the stand surfing his phone. He didn’t even look up as the group in front of us, or my girlfriends and I exited the front door.

As a server for many years myself, I tend to be critical of service… especially when the price of an entree is reaching $50. It was frustrating to tip 15% for what I consider bad service on a $200 bill. Other reviews cited long wait times for food and bad service. Perhaps this is the reason there were only 4 tables occupied and one patron at the bar on a Friday night.
