Kaapicat Cafe is a Ventura-based restaurant that offers a unique blend of American brunch and South Indian tiffin, lunch, and dinner. Their signature items include kaapi (a type of Indian coffee), masala dosa, and idli. All of their recipes are family blends and techniques that they are excited to share with the neighborhood.

We pulled up a little late, so the kitchen was already closed… tragic timing on our part. But the lassi? Slaps. Smooth, refreshing, exactly what it needed to be.
The coffee, on the other hand… not great. Like, confusingly bad in a space that feels like it should take coffee seriously.
That said, it’s a cute spot with genuinely great staff. Warm, welcoming, good energy. I’d come back earlier next time — skip the coffee, grab the lassi, and actually catch the kitchen while it’s open.

One of my favorite places to chill on an weekend morning. The staff here is really friendly — over time top friendly sometimes. I’m part of a book club where we convene at various places to discuss our books. We were treated to a plate of finger foods from the cafe, on the house — it was a total surprise. And the food was good. We’ve been coming here for book club a lot more often — not that we were expecting more free food, but it’s the occasional nice touch and good coffee that has us coming back.

When I’m strolling downtown and want small bites + a coffee buzz (and a place to charge my phone), Kaapicat is my go-to.
Their samosas are exactly what you want for a light snack: three crispy samosas served with tamarind date chutney and mint chutney, perfectly balanced and satisfying without being heavy. They also offer mango lassi and specialty drinks, but I stick to what I love: the iced vanilla latte, which never misses.
The flavors lean authentically South Indian while still feeling right at home in a contemporary café setting. The space is relaxed and welcoming. You’ll see locals, beachgoers, tourists, remote workers, meetup groups, and solo readers all sharing the space comfortably. The staff is efficient and genuinely kind, which makes it an easy place to pop into or hang out for a bit.

Bonus points for being nestled in walkable Downtown Ventura and offering online ordering for easy grab-and-go days.
Low-key, cozy, and thoughtfully done. A solid downtown stop when you want something simple that still hits.

Would give this place 10 stars if I could. Everything about this place is perfect! Starting with the friendly staff, and the flavorful food that just hits the right spot. Seldom outside of India would you find a casual, unassuming and surprisingly authentic tapas/cafe style Indian snacks. We are so glad we made a pitstop here on our way from Santa Barbara to universal studios, we were drawn here due to its unique name (kaapi means coffee in Tamil, specifically, their filter coffee) and the super interesting menu items. We would have ordered everything if we could have (we almost did). The cashew paneer dosa was just heavenly, just the right amount of crisp and the creamy yet aromatically spicy paneer is hard to find! The chef has perfected his recipes to the T. the chicken and waffles was a surprisingly authentic twist on the traditional fried chicken, I was so excited to find something like this outside of the south, and was mouthwateringly yummy. The chana puri was even better than the ones I find at South Indian joints – hands down one of the top three places for Indian inspired food in the country (living in the states for over a decade). Wish them all the best on their culinary journey, a true true gem indeed!

The mini puri balls are like an open face samosa where the sauce is already included. I’ve never seen those on a menu and I’m a fan! 5 balls for $11.
Iced Matcha latte with vanilla was really good. Great airy setting to work from. A few others with their laptops/having group meetings.

If you’re looking for coffee, tea, brunch, snack or a lunch, this is the perfect spot. Kaapicat has great customer service and tasty treats. The iced roasted marshmallow kaapi hit my coffee spot. Yummy! My son absolutely enjoyed the rose kaapi! Oh let me not forget the dosa. Tasty! The music is comforting and lively. You can work, hang-out or sit alone. Kaapicat soothes all needs. If I were a local, I’d be here regularly.

Wow wow wow. New favorite brunch spot in Ventura. Delicious flavorful southern Indian food that’s delicious and not heavy on the stomach. All good is made it order and fresh at purchase. Some food does have a little kick so if you are sensitive to spicy food make sure to ask first. Lots of vegan and some gluten free options too. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. We LOVED of latte. I highly recommend a visit. 2 meals, an appetizer of samosas, and two coffees was around $35 after tip. Worth every penny. Check this place out for breakfast, brunch, or just a coffee stop!!

Lovely little cafe with unique menu. I had the chicken with waffles which was impressive.
Very tasty moist chicken breast.
Waffles were so light they could’ve flown off my plate.
The mocha coffee was fabulous.
And beautifully done.
All in all, just perfect.
Table service great too.
I’ll be back!

I’m glad I gave this place a chance! The employees were friendly and the food/coffee was great. I really like that they have an option for small plates – perfect for when you want something quick but wholesome.
I tried their iced Kaapi coffee and it was perfect. I would recommend this place just for the coffee alone, but the food is great too. The samosas were delicious, especially with the tamarind chutney. Everything came out fresh and made with care.

The best coffee shop in Ventura. The cardamon chai is delicious and full of flavor. The breakfast sandwich is hands down the best food on the menu. Rose matcha tastes like they milked a rose of its essence and put it into a drink. Literally insane.
