I might seem a little harsh with my review but what is a reviews worth if it is not honest!
We visited this local eatery hoping that the historical reviews (4.7) were realistic, accurate & representative, alas they were not.
Let me begin with the ambience, it is unapologetically low key, no false airs or pretense, no exaggerated attempt to create ‘Little Italy’ just simple decor that is comfortable and well lit.
Let me preface my comments relating to the food, to speak to the service, it was attentive and informed, we could not ask for more in this regard.
Unfortunately this is the end of the positivity!
The food…was bland, lacking in any character or depth of flavor, while the portions were more than adequate. The mozzarella was plain and non descript, tomatoes that were not yet ripe ! and a balsamic glaze that lacked nuance or profile, just a thick sticky goop!
The pasta while well prepared was mono syllabic, the initial flavor was all there was to it.
The sauces were heavy and contained too much cream. My veal was so overcooked I thought it was LIVER, both in taste and texture! The brandy that was supposedly used in sauce preparation was MIA, not even a hint of it?
Such a shame, maybe some of the tomato based dishes might have fared better, I guess I will never know as I have no plans of returning.
We spent over $80 for an appetizer and two entrees and a glass of house wine.
We were not impressed!!

A friend of my Mom’s who is Italian recommended Benito’s so we had high hopes going there for dinner tonight before my son returned to school. The outside is cute, the decor is fine, the little bar is sweet but unfortunately, the food was lackluster and the most bland Italian food I have EVER tasted. I had chicken piccata and the chicken was actually boiled not pan-fried chicken in a piccata sauce, which is usually a combination of butter, oil, fresh lemon juice and capers. This boiled chicken’s “sauce” was leftover pasta water, no butter, no lemon juice in the “sauce” but a slice of lemon placed on top of the food to I guess you were supposed to squeeze your own lemon juice on to your food but they did have capers and the salt from the caper was the only flavor to this bland dish, even after adding red pepper flakes from the table. My Mom had Benito’s Tortellini, which was supposed to be cheese-stuffed tortellini pasta with mushrooms and spinach in a cream sauce topped with parmesan and again, absolutely bland and tasteless. My son had the Shrimp Scampi which is normally shrimp sauteed with garlic in a lemon white wine sauce on linguine and STRIKE 3 … BLAND AND ZERO TASTE. Even the cannoli for dessert was a sad representation of the real thing. Cannoli filling is always a sweet, creamy mixture primarily of drained whole milk ricotta cheese and powdered sugar, flavored with vanilla extract, orange/lemon zest, and cinnamon, often with mix-ins like mini chocolate chips, candied fruit, or chopped pistachios, and sometimes enriched with mascarpone or heavy cream for extra richness. This filling was not dense or filled with any of these ingredients and tasted of flour so everything about the meal was poor and so off. The young waitress who very sweet and we believe the owner and his wife came to our table 3 separate times after the meal to ask about the food and find out how much we loved it and we could only say “it was OK.” The owner (man) in particular didn’t have a clue that “OK” means nothing good and kept asking and we had nothing more to add since it was not good. I wish I could write a really good review but I just can’t so save your money and find another place for good Italian food in the Tyler, TX area. If you find one, please let me know!

P.S. The bread before the meal and the serving size of the food was generous if that is all you care about!

P.P.S. It was entertaining to hear the grunts of the kids next door doing karate or some form of martial arts through the wall as we ate dinner!

Wow! The customer service is excellent here and the staff are professional and friendly. The food has an incredible real Italian taste. The portions are huge enough to feed two or three on one meal. Served hot and fresh, no I mean really fresh. This would be a great place to travel to if you’re an individual or family who travels for food like we do. We highly recommend this place and appreciate a business who is clean and services its customers the best!

We have not eaten inside the restaurant yet, but we have ordered takeout twice. Amazing both times!! The orders were ready within 15 minutes of submitting them online. When my husband picked them up, the staff was friendly and welcoming. We had the Bentio pizza and Meat Lovers pizza the first time. We ordered the small and we ate on them for 3 days! The crust is both tender and crispy. The sauce is perfect, well balanced in flavor. The meat lovers pizza has large pieces of meat yet bite-sized. I did delete the jalapeños from the Bentio as I do not eat them, but the pizza was superb without them. This time, my husband wanted the Meat Lovers pizza again. And it was exactly as we expected it would be. I got the sausage calzone with hamburger added. First time for me to try a calzone, and it was wonderful. The bread was soft inside and crispy on the outside. The meat was melted into the mozzarella cheese just right. The marinara dipping sauce was just the right flavor to compliment the calzone. We will definitely order takeout again and try something else from their menu. If you haven’t tried them yet, please do. You won’t be disappointed!

Bullard, listen up—Benito’s is that girl. ✨

I had the Woodsmen Penne and it was rustic, rich, and tasted like it knew what it was doing. Hubby went with the crawfish ravioli (bold choice, zero regrets), and our daughter crushed the cheese ravioli like a tiny Italian nonna in training.

Let’s talk about the bread for a second because WOW. Warm, perfect, dangerous. Paired with their dipping oil? I would’ve happily skipped the entrée and lived there.

The owner was genuinely kind—the kind of nice that makes you want to come back even hungrier.

Benito’s is a true hidden gem in our little town. Come hungry. Leave happy. Possibly loosen your jeans. Worth it. ❤️

If you’re looking for a place that delivers both flavor and atmosphere, this is it. The Benito’s pizza is absolutely amazing—packed with flavor, perfectly cooked, and hands down one of the best pizzas I’ve had in a long time. On top of that, the atmosphere is just as impressive: warm, relaxing, and welcoming. It’s the kind of spot you can enjoy whether you’re out with friends or just looking to unwind. Highly recommend!

I ate here Saturday, January 3, 2026 with friends. Until this meal, I have always loved the food. I had the pasta trio, my favorite many times. It was not anything like it was in the past. What has been done to the recipes? Please go back to the way your pasta used to be. There was hardly any tomato sauce and the sauce used to be delicious. It was over cooked and dried out. Way too much cheese and the cheese seemed so oily. My friend blotted the oil with napkins. I’ll go back one more time as I really hope this restaurant will survive. All 3 of us felt like the food quality had declined significantly.

Objectively the best Italian food in the area (including Tyler), with easily the best prices. My favorite pizza in Tyler as well. I adore this gem of a restaurant!!

I drive twenty minutes every Saturday to try one of their pizza’s I haven’t sample yet. I have yet to be underwhelmed.

2025 update:
THERES still SO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM!!!
Prices are NOT higher and the portions are still huge!!! But if they did, they would still be perfect.

Now let’s talk about that fried zucchini. Let me start by saying I am not a zucchini fan. But this zucchini is fried and battered to perfection. Sickly sliced so I was concerned at first but Tinder to the bite. The dinner bread is incredible so pace yourself with it. And underneath all of his cheese and sauce is a eggplant Parmesan and spaghetti the perfect place to break a Yum Kipo fast I could only eat a third of everything that was brought. You will never be disappointed, and if you are, it will not be with the food or the service
THERES SO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM!!! You will definitely find several things to love!!! Now, this is bittersweet- I love mushrooms but I do NOT like ! And I got the stuff mushroom and it was all over the plate. So I think crab lovers would enjoy it far better than me! The sauce and the mushrooms were fabulous though! The sauce has an extraordinary taste and flavor, sure to make your taste buds sing so it’s 5✨⭐️ all on its own.
NOW, for my chicken pasta dish… it was a new experience for me! I will order eggplant, Parmesan, or eggplant Primavera 99% of the time, however, this time there was such a wide variety to choose from on the menu I decided to step off of my traditional road most traveled! Lol and I tried something completely different !
Let me say that the pasta was neither overcooked nor undercooked, it was absolutely perfect! I am a huge fan of mushrooms and capers, and this particular dish had a little kick in spice with some red and green bell peppers and onion, and was very unique! Most of the time, I am very disappointed whenever I order something new, and I’ve never had it before. HOWEVER, this was not the case. I am committed to trying a new dish every time I come to visit. The vegetables were well cooked and the chicken was tender to the cut with my fork.

I am a huge fan of Italian and Mediterranean foods, and I must admit this has been the best Italian restaurant in East Texas thus far. And has been bumped up to my number three all-time favorite Italian restaurant. In order to take my number one favorite spot. I have to try the eggplant Primavera/Parmesan, or whatever the eggplant dish is.

There was a line, but it is definitely worth the wait. The sweet tea is sweet like family reunion sweet tea so I may just have to get water next time lol

And the olive oil with the herbs in it is incredible and the bread you will definitely have to fight over with your friends and family if they only bring you one piece, it literally melts in your mouth!

I am very happy and pleased with this quaint spot off Hwy 69 and if I was hungry in Lufkin or Dallas, I’d wait to eat at Benito’s in Bullard!!!
