I wanted to love this real bad, I’ve heard nothing but great things—aside from them being a bit pricey—but our experience was less than pleasant. We order the gumbo, side of queso, ground beef queso birria, mangorita, corona, 2 don julio shots and of course you get the chips and salsa.

The chips tasted stale but the salsa was chefs kiss—loved it! Queso birria tacos were excellent, I’ve never had them with ground beef but they were flavored beautifully. The gumbo was the beginning of my experience changing. It took my by surprise to see these tiny morsels of meat but I was truly taken aback when I took a bit into the unseasoned chicken and shrimp, I’m not sure if 3 shrimp is the standard but that’s what I got. I mentioned this to our server and she said well I know the steak is seasoned because I eat that all the time, I can have them make you some more chicken but it’s gonna be a while—we only have 1 cook for the entire restaurant. I empathize as a human but as a patron, you having one cook is not my business—I’m paying for a service and good food. Her response was not what I was expecting but I waited…she brought me back a few strips of chicken this time.
I was surprised there was only one type of hot sauce in the restaurant when I asked for Cholula but not a deal breaker. So then my partner ordered a mangorita and the waitress brought back this large very orange drink—we looked and just decided to keep it and try to enjoy it but it was truly too orange flavored so we left over half a glass. He then ordered to Don Julio shots and she asked if he wanted salt on the rims, he said yes and then looked at me to make sure and I said sure. There were no water refills and I found out during us taking the shot my rim had sugar, his had salt —that was awful. I mentioned it to the server and she said, I thought you said sugar? I was perplexed how she thought that when I wasn’t even the one who placed the order. At this point we were both over it and left.

The staff were nice and friendly, the restaurant seemed to have a good vibe over all, maybe it’s a good place for drinks but as far as food goes. Sadly it’s a worse Mexican restaurant I’ve been to. food had no flavor, salsa was stale and their spicy sauce tasted like it was made with old water. Definitely a good place for those with a more delicate pallet, NOTHING was spicy 🙁

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Loco Lupes, a fantastic Mexican restaurant. From the moment I walked in, the vibrant and cozy ambiance set the tone for an unforgettable experience.

The menu offered a delightful array of Mexican dishes, and I couldn’t resist starting with their homemade guacamole and salsa, which were bursting with fresh flavors. For my main course, I ordered the Quesobarria Tacos, and it was a true masterpiece. The combination of spices and ingredients created a symphony of flavors that danced on my taste buds.

What truly impressed me was the attentive and friendly staff. They provided excellent recommendations and ensured that my dining experience was top-notch. The margaritas were also exceptional and perfectly complemented the meal.

I can’t wait to return to Loco Lupes to explore more of their menu. If you’re looking for authentic Mexican cuisine served with a warm atmosphere and outstanding service, I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try. It’s a true gem in the world of Mexican dining.

The food and drinks here are PHENOMENAL! Dave and Jose are the owners and they really make you feel comfortable and welcomed. The Bartenders are excellent and they really go out of their way to make sure you are satisfied. One of the best kept secrets in Tuscaloosa and I cannot wait to visit this restaurant again!❤️❤️❤️

The food here is beyond mid. Birria is barely birria and everything is very unseasoned for a Mexican restaurant. Presentation is really bad and not great. It’s weird because I expected this to be a Mexican place but it’s weirdly in between like they have not decided what they want to serve.
There are much better options for Mexican food in Tuscaloosa and Tex-mex if that is your thing. I’d give it a try if you are curious but do not expect to fall in love with the food.

My wife told me not to go to these American Mexican spots lol I should’ve listened smh.. ordered 2 fish and 2 shrimp tacos but ended up with 3 shrimp tacos. Lady told me I ordered 2 tacos and they didn’t have fish, i told her i ordered 2 of each (fish and shrimp), she then read the receipt saying i only ordered 2. me not having my phone to verify my order said it was cool to get 2 shrimp. They gave me 3 shrimp tacos probably because they were out of the fish. Got to my car to verify my order only to find out I in fact did order 4 tacos went back in for the other taco. Now I have 4 shrimp tacos and I only wanted 2. To make it worse, when ordering the shrimp tacos, it says they come with 4 shrimp but yep you guessed it, it was 3 shrimp per taco. Smh
By living on the west coast, I have different expectation of mexican food. The chimichunga is not what I expected. It fits in the palm of my hands, I must say I was not expecting it to be so small for 13 bucks. Was not a good experience and the food is OK. Definitely won’t be getting Mexican food in Alabama anymore. 57 dollars and barley got anything. Socal is much different for a cheaper price. DONT GET THE CHIMICHUNGAS, you’ll be very disappointed

Food brought out wasn’t what we ordered on three of the four plates. The proportions were small on the street tacos. Drink refills were nonexistent. Ordered queso to eat chips with and never got it. Haven’t gotten the bill yet but imagine we’re going to be overcharged since they brought what we didn’t order or received. Not even busy maybe 1/3 of the tables were full if that, and nobody sitting at the bar, but didn’t help tables with refills since not doing anything. Dishes weren’t cleared from the table as they were emptied.

Oh and half of the soft shell taco shells were stale.

Manager once aware was super sweet and helpful

I had the pleasure of dining at Loco Lupe’s in Tuscaloosa, AL, and it was an absolute delight! From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in for a fantastic experience.

First off, I had the pleasure of being served by Trent, the bartender. Not only was he a friendly face, but he was also a local who had a wealth of knowledge about the city. He shared some fascinating historic anecdotes while mixing up the perfect margarita for me. Trent’s recommendations truly added to the enjoyment of my visit to Tuscaloosa.

The owner of Loco Lupe’s deserves a special shoutout. I was thoroughly impressed by his dedication and hard work. He was everywhere, from crafting drinks to running food orders and ensuring his team was performing at their best. It’s clear that he takes pride in his establishment, and it shows in every aspect of the dining experience.

Location-wise, Loco Lupe’s couldn’t be better situated. Nestled in a brand-new area of town, it’s conveniently close to some of the nicest hotels and boasts a beautiful waterfront view. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a meal or drinks while taking in the surroundings.

Speaking of drinks, the margarita I had was nothing short of excellent, and the shot of liquor I ordered was well priced. The menu offered a delicious variety of options, and I indulged in a quesadilla and enchilada. The salsa was incredibly tasty, and the green sauce added that extra zing to my meal.

In conclusion, Loco Lupe’s is a hidden gem in Tuscaloosa that I wholeheartedly recommend. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this restaurant is a must-visit. The combination of friendly staff, fantastic drinks, delicious food, and a great location makes it a top-notch choice for any occasion. Don’t miss out on the chance to experience the magic of Loco Lupe’s for yourself!

I visited on 9/19/23 while in town for work. I hope I’m able to return again sometime soon! Peyton was my waitress and she was so friendly and efficient. The owner came around to speak and recommended the Birria tacos. Omg, they were so good!! Definitely some of the best tacos and margaritas I’ve ever had. They use fresh fruit and it makes a HUGE difference. I also ordered the chorizo dip. Everything was so good that I forgot to take pictures first. The only thing about my experience that gave me a slight pause was that there was a small dog inside the restaurant. However, he or she was very quiet and sweet. You hardly noticed. I highly recommend this place and have my fingers crossed that I’m able to return soon!
