Reviews
I recently dined at Mesquitery with high hopes, and while there were definite highlights, the execution on some of the main dishes held the experience back from being truly great. I’m giving it three stars—good enough to try again, but with room for significant improvement.
The experience started strong with great service from the staff. To focus on the positives, the pierogies were good, and since I’d never had them before, they were a pleasant and successful surprise! The dessert and drinks were also excellent: the cheesecake was amazing—and being homemade really showed—and the Old Fashioned was expertly made.
However, the main courses were a bit inconsistent:
I really wanted to love the steak, and it certainly had good seasoning, but the medium-rare preparation was significantly undercooked and needed a slightly harder sear to achieve that perfect crust.
The shrimp were also a letdown, being under-seasoned and needing more cook time to be properly cooked through.
The accompanying baked potato was just okay.
Finally, since the grill is clearly a focal point of the restaurant, I noticed the grill area could use better lighting to enhance that visual element and make it more appealing.
I am willing to try Mesquitery again in the future, hoping the kitchen addresses these execution issues. The potential is definitely there!
Pros:
Pierogies were Amazing! Best this on the menu.
Good Food selection.
Cons: Took over an hour for us to get our food. Our server never once came and checked on us while we were waiting for our food. When our food finally came out half of the dishes were ice cold. When we flagged down our server to tell her She immediately hit us with “well what do you want me to to”. We ended up opting for them to just heat it up because we didn’t want to wait another hour. Never offered any kind of discount.
I was really excited to try this place but it was kind of a bust.
The Red Snapper, which I ordered with clam chowder (not pictured), was very disappointing, and I would not recommend it. The Iron Steak was alright, but the portion was too small.
Overall, I felt it wasn’t a good value due to the small portions and the underwhelming taste of the red snapper.
The French dip sandwich is excellent, though the au jus could benefit from reduced sodium. The baked beans are adequate but unremarkable, resembling standard canned varieties. The house salad is similarly basic, consisting primarily of chopped lettuce. In contrast, the chicken fettuccine Alfredo is exceptional-among the best we have had. However, we cannot recommend the shrimp fettuccine Alfredo, as the shrimp appeared to be previously frozen and reheated, possibly in a microwave, and may not have been the advertised Rock Shrimp variety.
The chicken skewers deliver excellent smoky flavor, though they are not actually served on skewers—nor does the chicken show evidence of skewer preparation. The dish features sesame oil and is garnished with both black and toasted sesame seeds, which enhance both the flavor profile and presentation. The ribs are tender, well-smoked, and consistently delicious.
Even though some options may be disappointing, we plan to return.
We watched the kitchen operations from our table directly by the front door. The cook handling the meat also handled fresh tomatoes, lettuce, and sandwich buns; all without gloves. The meat was also appeared to be pre-cooked and pre-packaged in styrofoam trays and covered in seran wrap. They microwaved the packages, and then unwrapped them and placed them on the grill plate that can be seen from the front. This was neither appealing nor appropriate. We canceled our order and left, paying for the bread and one Arnold Palmer drink.
I don’t believe the owner ate aware of what they are doing, but for the $30-40 per person price tag, I would expect better.
I would not recommend this location to anyone.
