I visited Cha Baa Thai (26 Crane Lake Dr, Halifax) for the first time and had a really good overall experience! The food was excellent, the service was quick, and the portions were generous — exactly what you’d hope for from a Thai restaurant.
I arrived around 7:40 PM and was initially asked if I was ordering takeout. When I mentioned I wanted to dine in, the staff seemed a little surprised and explained that since they close at 8:30 PM, they didn’t want me to feel rushed. I reassured them I’m a quick eater, and they seated me without issue.
My order was taken by 7:45 PM, and impressively, the food arrived in about five minutes — fresh, hot, and full of flavor! I ordered the Garlic Beef, which was perfectly crispy and flavorful, and the Chicken Pad Thai, which had a great balance of texture and taste, with the peanuts served on the side. Both dishes were excellent and well worth the price.
The server also did a quick quality check shortly after I began eating, which I appreciated.
There were a few small quirks during my visit:
The parking lot is fairly limited given the size of the dining area.
I was initially served warm water, which I later learned might be normal in some Thai restaurants — when I asked, the server kindly brought me a new glass with ice.
I noticed a couple of guests who arrived shortly after me were told the restaurant was closing soon and encouraged to order takeout — they appeared to leave without ordering.
A second group arrived about 30 minutes before the posted closing time and was told the restaurant was already closed, despite the sign and online info stating they close at 8:30 PM. That could definitely be disappointing, especially for someone traveling out of their way to eat here.
That said, the dining atmosphere was nice, with relaxing background music, and the food was top-notch. I’d definitely return — just a bit earlier next time!
The restaurant itself, including the washrooms, were immaculate. All accoutrements, cutlery, chinaware, etc, were more upscale than usual. Service was quite good although the waitress struggled with English. When we ate close to noon the restaurant was less than a quarter full yet the small car park outside was overflowing, people parking on the street up the road.
It was clear this restaurant works hard to earn their business. We are inclined to return in the future.
The atmosphere is beautifully decorated in a very authentic Thai style with luxurious booths and tables as well. The restaurant is spotlessly clean.
The menu offers a large variety of traditional Thai dishes, and I had a hard time deciding what to try my first time, so I ordered a few yummy dishes . I had the coconut soup, the fried noodles, and a spring roll. I’m not much of a soup person, but oh my goodness, this soup knocked it out of the ball park!! A mix of sweet and savory… it was delicious! I chose to have mine with chicken, and if chicken is not your thing, they have other options, and to be honest, without any meat or fish, it’s perfect on its own as a vegetarian soup. The spring roll was deep fried to perfection, and I loved the fried noodles as well. This dish offers an interesting texture that was unexpected but delightful. The plating and presentation of their dishes are exceptional ! Sooo pretty!! Who doesn’t love eating luxerious food at an amazing cost…. my wallet loved this, too. I included our receipt, and you can see we ate well with plenty of food to take home!
The speed with which the food was prepared was a very happy surprise!
The service was great as well, and servers checked on us frequently and answered questions we had. Very friendly and kind.
I really can’t wait to go again!! It’s definitely worth our drive!!
Well done, Cha Baii Thai!!
Ordered a number of dishes.
Fresh spring rolls were nice, but limited amount of fresh herbs (mint, basil)
Mango salad wasn’t really a salad – just large pieces of mango and one large chunk of red onion, barely any fresh herbs.
Enjoyed the Eggplant Basil, I would up the amount of basil and sauce.
Lemongrass chicken was flavorful but not esthetically pleasing – just looked like a heap of boiled chicken breast. Again, lacked fresh herbs.
Pad Thai, nice flavor, loved the noodles, but the beef was a bit overcooked and chewy.
Steamed jasmine rice was nice.
Please spend less time on those beautiful garnishes and more time on those amazing fresh flavors Thai cuisine is famous for!!!
Overall, good experience and yes, we will give it another chance.
Seriously the best Thai food. I’ve tried most of the menu and haven’t found a single bad dish yet.
My go-tos are always the squid ring fries and pad thai but the fried rice is so good too.
The Thai chilli fish is also a must. The sauce is next level.
Honestly, everything here is good. You have to try it. Sometimes they are too busy to serve foods fast enough but worth it
