Reviews
I started off with chips and salsa, which came out fresh and crisp. The salsa had a nice kick without being too spicy—definitely better than most. For my main dish, I ordered the fajitas, and they came out sizzling hot. The meat was tender, well-seasoned, and the portion size was huge. Everything tasted fresh, and you could tell it was made right there, not sitting under a heat lamp.
The service really stood out, too. Our server was friendly, quick to check in, and made sure drinks were always full. The food came out in good time even though the place was pretty busy. Prices were very reasonable for the amount of food you get—definitely a solid value.
If I had one small critique, it would be that the margarita I ordered was just okay—not bad, but not amazing either. And I did notice a small credit card fee at the end of the bill, which would’ve been nice to know upfront. But honestly, those are minor things compared to how good the overall experience was.
All in all, I’d absolutely go back to San Jose. The food’s flavorful, the staff’s friendly, and it just has that laid-back, authentic feel that makes you want to come back again. It’s easily one of the better spots in Valpo for Mexican food.
The positives –
Service was respectful, adequate, not stellar, and perhaps bit slow.
Prices were really good.
The negatives –
Food to table time was a bit long, given that they didn’t seem too terribly busy.
Portions were on the small side, made the low price point make sense.
Food quality was very average, nothing to shout out, “I’m coming back for more!” Not horrible, just meh…
Overall, our experience was not a standout, especially based on many of the reviews. The flavors and overall quantity of the food were just a bit disappointing when compared to the plethora of Mexican restaurants in the area.
I love Cecina meat and not many Mexican restaurants have it. They made an entree for me and it was excellente!
Out Server Mia was super friendly and helpful. I look forward to visiting again soon. Great family atmosphere, they also have a private party room and a separate bar area that looks very cozy
When we arrived, our server brought two waters and a pink lemonade for my niece and said, “I knew you’d want this,” as he set it down. It felt like a kind, thoughtful gesture—almost like a small gift for the table. He then asked what I’d like to drink, mentioning he didn’t have enough hands to carry four drinks at once. Normally, we don’t order soft drinks, but we allowed it since it seemed complimentary.
He also took the time to make my niece a flower out of a paper napkin, which absolutely made her day. She was amazed, and it was a very fun, memorable experience for her.
However, when the bill came, I was surprised to see a $3 charge for the soft drink we never ordered and would not have accepted had we known there was a charge. While I’m glad my niece enjoyed the experience, I don’t feel comfortable being charged for items that weren’t requested or clearly explained. Transparency matters, and situations like that don’t feel like good business practice.
I paid my bill, tipped my server, and left—but I’m sharing this so other families might ask the question I didn’t: “Is this a gift, or is there a charge?”
UPDATE: 01/2025
San Jose Mexican Restaurant in Valparaiso, IN, is worth a second look. My first visit left me unimpressed, but this time, I ordered the shrimp fajitas, and they were a game-changer! The portion was generous, with plenty of plump shrimp and fresh veggies sizzling on the hot plate. The accompanying sides of rice, beans, guacamole, and salsa were equally delicious. Speaking of salsa, it was the star of the show – we couldn’t get enough of it!
The service was friendly and efficient, with our server promptly taking our order and attending to our needs throughout the meal. The restaurant has a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, perfect for a casual dinner with friends or family.
