I went to San Jose Mexican Restaurant in Valparaiso the other night, and I’ve got to say—it was a great experience overall. The place has a warm, colorful vibe that feels welcoming the second you walk in. It’s casual but still clean and comfortable, the kind of spot where you can relax and enjoy a good meal without any rush.

I started off with chips and salsa, which came out fresh and crisp. The salsa had a nice kick without being too spicy—definitely better than most. For my main dish, I ordered the fajitas, and they came out sizzling hot. The meat was tender, well-seasoned, and the portion size was huge. Everything tasted fresh, and you could tell it was made right there, not sitting under a heat lamp.

The service really stood out, too. Our server was friendly, quick to check in, and made sure drinks were always full. The food came out in good time even though the place was pretty busy. Prices were very reasonable for the amount of food you get—definitely a solid value.

If I had one small critique, it would be that the margarita I ordered was just okay—not bad, but not amazing either. And I did notice a small credit card fee at the end of the bill, which would’ve been nice to know upfront. But honestly, those are minor things compared to how good the overall experience was.

All in all, I’d absolutely go back to San Jose. The food’s flavorful, the staff’s friendly, and it just has that laid-back, authentic feel that makes you want to come back again. It’s easily one of the better spots in Valpo for Mexican food.

First time & went there earlier on Friday evening and were promptly seated.

The positives –
Service was respectful, adequate, not stellar, and perhaps bit slow.
Prices were really good.

The negatives –
Food to table time was a bit long, given that they didn’t seem too terribly busy.
Portions were on the small side, made the low price point make sense.
Food quality was very average, nothing to shout out, “I’m coming back for more!” Not horrible, just meh…

Overall, our experience was not a standout, especially based on many of the reviews. The flavors and overall quantity of the food were just a bit disappointing when compared to the plethora of Mexican restaurants in the area.

This was our first time at San Jose. What a wonderful restaurant. Had lunch with my wife and our aunt. Everything we had there was amazing. At first I was worried because the menu was so big with so many choices. But everything we had was wonderful. They were even happy to make something for me off menu.
I love Cecina meat and not many Mexican restaurants have it. They made an entree for me and it was excellente!
Out Server Mia was super friendly and helpful. I look forward to visiting again soon. Great family atmosphere, they also have a private party room and a separate bar area that looks very cozy

The camera usually eats first…but not this time! We started off with a tres leches for an appetizer, I highly recommend it was fresh and delicious and very big for the size and cost. Then I got a bean dip, I couldn’t help it because the chips were so fresh and hot. Then for our meals we got the enchiladas and chili cheese steak tacos that were on special. I had one slight issue with my enchiladas but it’s personal preference, I like mine a little bit more saucier than what was on it, but considering they actually made the sauce not dumped something from a can on here, I was very satisfied. As for the tacos, they were flavorful, tender not dry or over cooked. Lastly I got a to go order of tacos de lengua to which their review was, “that was the best food I’ve had from a Mexican restaurant around here!” I can’t wait to come back when I can sample the bar!

San Jose has a truly authentic atmosphere—the smell, the décor, and the overall vibe genuinely brought my culture to life. I really enjoyed the food, and the service itself was attentive and warm.

When we arrived, our server brought two waters and a pink lemonade for my niece and said, “I knew you’d want this,” as he set it down. It felt like a kind, thoughtful gesture—almost like a small gift for the table. He then asked what I’d like to drink, mentioning he didn’t have enough hands to carry four drinks at once. Normally, we don’t order soft drinks, but we allowed it since it seemed complimentary.

He also took the time to make my niece a flower out of a paper napkin, which absolutely made her day. She was amazed, and it was a very fun, memorable experience for her.

However, when the bill came, I was surprised to see a $3 charge for the soft drink we never ordered and would not have accepted had we known there was a charge. While I’m glad my niece enjoyed the experience, I don’t feel comfortable being charged for items that weren’t requested or clearly explained. Transparency matters, and situations like that don’t feel like good business practice.

I paid my bill, tipped my server, and left—but I’m sharing this so other families might ask the question I didn’t: “Is this a gift, or is there a charge?”

Took the picture after I had mixed it together. But this burrito bowl was huge! The flavor of the chicken was very tasty! The wait staff are very pleasant, even on Mothers Day, which was our first time here! They are very attentive. Definitely our new go to place!

San Jose Mexican Restaurant in Valparaiso, IN, offers a clean dining environment and friendly service, which made a positive first impression. I ordered a trio of tacos: chicken, pork, and steak. The chicken taco stood out for its seasoning and hint of spice, but unfortunately, the meat was overly dry. The pork taco didn’t fare much better in terms of texture or flavor, and the steak taco was underwhelming, with small, almost unnoticeable pieces of meat. While the staff was attentive and the atmosphere pleasant, the food fell short of expectations, and I won’t be returning.

UPDATE: 01/2025

San Jose Mexican Restaurant in Valparaiso, IN, is worth a second look. My first visit left me unimpressed, but this time, I ordered the shrimp fajitas, and they were a game-changer! The portion was generous, with plenty of plump shrimp and fresh veggies sizzling on the hot plate. The accompanying sides of rice, beans, guacamole, and salsa were equally delicious. Speaking of salsa, it was the star of the show – we couldn’t get enough of it!

The service was friendly and efficient, with our server promptly taking our order and attending to our needs throughout the meal. The restaurant has a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, perfect for a casual dinner with friends or family.

Stopped by for dinner with the family today, no wait for seating- plenty of parking- a little wait for food but not unreasonable. My burrito was delicious and big enough for leftovers too! I especially loved the green sauce. Our waiter did a fantastic job keeping us filled on drinks and making sure we were alright. Overall a good experience, but it did seem a little claustrophobic and was a bit louder than I expected.

Was very pleased with my first visit here. In my opinion Valpo has very few good Mexican restaurants. This is by far one of the best if not most likely the best Mexican in Valpo. Our server was a 10/10 and the food was also very good. The service definitely stood out as he made the experience better than it already was. Will be back and highly recommend trying this place.

This is the new spot. The food is fantastic as always like their location in Crown Point called Fat Burrito not affiliated with the one in Chesterton. The service is great everyone is very attentive. The inside is really nice as well. They have a lot of amazing food here. I’ve tried a lot on their menu from the years of going to the other location also don’t forget to get the tres leches cake. you won’t regret it at all.
