Everything we’ve tried at The Bait & Hook so far is excellent, including the rock shrimp tempura, Nashville fish sando, crab cakes, miso soup, nigiri, hosomaki, and maki rolls. Perfect texture, seasoning, temperature, everything. No notes. I maaay have told the sushi chef that his salmon nigiri is life changing.
I also tried the red snapper collar on our third visit, which was my first time having a fish collar. It was some of the best fish I’ve ever had, and that’s saying something having lived in FL my whole life. It was paired with perfectly cooked rice and some heavenly chimichurri. Added a miso soup on the side because why not. Silky, salty, umami heaven.
Even beyond the food, this is a place that’s easy to love. The staff is super friendly, helpful, and accommodating. When my husband explained he was trying a low FODMAP diet, they offered us tamari to avoid gluten and swapped out seasonings to avoid garlic. Plus, they have a no-waste, sustainability focus that I absolutely love. Their plates seem to be compostable, too. Super reasonable prices, especially for such high quality seafood.
Honestly I’m already planning a time to go back because writing this has me craving the salmon nigiri again!
We both ordered the Fish Sando, made with freshly caught Florida Lane Snapper. Mine was panko-coated and fried and it was perfectly crisp and golden, topped with Carolina-style coleslaw on a toasted potato bun. My wife had hers blackened, with lettuce, tomato, onion, tartar sauce, fries, and a house pickle spear. She upgraded to Nashville Fries with blue cheese and a spicy sauce which she thought was definitely worth it. My seasoned fries were thick, crisp, and delicious.
They take food allergies seriously, with gluten-free options clearly marked. You order, give your number, and they text when it’s ready. We grabbed beers from The Basin and played cribbage while waiting.
Friendly people, great food, and an awesome addition to the Depot. Highly recommend!
Would have thrown in a few extra stars if the service was even halfway decent. No greeting. Ordered on a screen. Took over 20 minutes.
Saw that Bait & Hook had a roll pay homage to dharma southern kitchen
(Which was once located in the same spot of Henry’s Depot years ago), and I had to get it.. seeing as how I worked there, at that time.
Anyway, the roll is delicious, and the perfect combinations of flavor!! Mike Evans is great at his skill, and was excited to see a vegan option I could partake in.
Also, the seaweed salad … also delicious!
