When your order is taken, they allow you to say how hot or mild you’d like each dish. I appreciate this – and it is an indicator that the food is made fresh and to order.
We ordered two of the daily specials: Mongolian beef lo mein, and curry chicken. Each came with soup (egg drop or hot and sour), wontons, egg roll, and rice.
The meal was old-school Chinese-American, the sort of Chinese food you might have had in Chicago in the mid-60s. This is not a bad thing; in fact I really enjoyed the trip down memory lane, thinking back to small-town Chinese restaurants that I ate in during the 70s and early 80s before Chinese restaranteurs began to realize that there was a big market for regionalized “authentic” Chinese food. All the components were present: the paper place mat with the Chinese zodiac (Year of the Horse: you are attractive to the opposite sex, but don’t marry a Rat); forks and spoons at each place setting – not a chopstick in sight; fluorescent red sweet and sour sauce; even a bowl of crispy chow mein noodles to go with the soup. Do you remember those? I remember Chun King Crispy Chow Mein Noodles, that came in a can, and when you pulled the ring on the lid it went whoosh, and were delicious and addictive.
My curry chicken was disappointing. Everything was cooked perfectly – each vegetable had exactly the correct amount of crispiness. But the sauce was really not good, as though the spices had been thrown in dry near the end instead of being allowed to fully hydrate either in oil or water, depending, prior to being added to the sauce. The result was a fairly harsh flavor. Not terrible by any means, but very far from being a good curry sauce.
The lo mein had a good flavor, and there was plenty of beef. My wife thought the noodles should have been cooked softer; I thought they were just right. The sauce was tasty, even at the mild setting.
I’m glad we went. The sheer unintentional retro feel was kind of great. But to be completely frank, the food was just OK. I think the restaurant has been there for a long time, with the same owners, and I’m glad it”s there, but the whole experience felt just a bit stale.
But look: if you’re in town for a while, check it out. If you’re a local, you either already eat there or you don’t, and nothing in this review should change your mind about which camp you are in. I hope the restaurant continues to be a going concern for as long as the owners want it to be, because the owner seems like a really nice and considerate person.
Ive talked to the owners and they don’t use any pre-processed foods or sauces like other places do. Its nice you can order some Chinese beer there too. The wonton soup had a nice flavor, and it they didn’t skimp on the wonton’s like most places.
