Honestly, mixed bag here. Service was top-notch—friendly staff, quick refills, all that good stuff. But the food? Let’s talk chicken katsu first: it fell flat, literally substandard. The chicken felt like it was from the bargain bin—tough texture, barely seasoned, not the juicy, crispy kind you’d expect in Hawaiian spots. They could’ve used better quality meat to make it worth it. Then, the real kicker: I ordered Portuguese sausage, craving that smoky, garlicky vibe, and got three measly pieces of spam instead. Straight-up swap without a heads-up? Felt like a prank. And get this—it rang up at the same price as buying three cans of spam off the shelf myself. Save your cash next time, folks. Overall, skip unless you’re just there for some me thing you know is quality food. Did I mention the staff was awesome?!

Came here late on a Tuesday night. Empty, quiet, and clean. Thank you, cashier Veronica, for being so friendly and sweet! She gave me a water cup! (Also, look how much spam they put in my Musubi hahaha). 🙂

Been coming for years. Great tasting Hawaiian BBQ and macaroni salad. Can be very busy peak hours, so order ahead or come an hour early/later like 4pm. Prices going up, so now $18 for a BBQ plate, $10 for a basic bowl. Don’t expect a culinary miracle if you order anything else like a hamburger or katsu – there’s better on Harbor for those items.

Great service, amazing portions prepared fresh. So glad to have a local L&L. Keep it big. Thanks for cooking for us tonight. Photo was after ten minutes of munching, barely made a dent. Chicken katsu combo. Yum!

It was one of those nights that it was too late to make something for dinner so we decided to stop at L&L. We’re very familiar with L&L and have enjoyed it here on the mainland and and in Hawaii. Their Chicken Katsu is always delish and I have only had the kalua pork while in Hawaii.

I spotted that they had an Ohana Meal Deal – which came with two meat choices, rice and Mac salad. We selected Chicken Katsu and Kalua Pork with Cabbage. The Chicken was really good and the serving was very generous. The kalua pork on the other hand wasn’t good at all. I don’t know what the flavor was – maybe too much liquid smoke or something – but definitely not the flavor I’m used to. The taste was so off that it was difficult to eat – I didn’t enjoy it at all – and definitely wouldn’t order that again.

I also ordered a hamburger steak which was pretty sad. The patties were dry, the gravy was ok and it didn’t have any grilled onions. It pretty much was a sad loco moco without the egg.

The meal also came with white rice that was ok, and mac salad which was also just ok.

If you’re wondering what to order, I would definitely recommend the chicken katsu. That’s all I can recommend at this point.

I added an extra star for the staff that were friendly.

The Kahlua pork bowl and Kahlua plate were awesome!
Can’t wait to try the BBQ beef & chicken! Takes you back to the islands! It’s basically a takeout place but very clean and perfectly comfortable to dine in and the staff was very helpful, kind and full of Aloha!!!

I am just comparing this location with the one in Irvine. I said this is 10x better. Friendlier staff. Cleaner place. And way more generous portions. The only problem I have with our order is the chicken katsu was really hard. Double fried can save a lot of time during rush and to assure crispiness. But when the store only has 2 tables seated I would expect a fresh piece of fried chicken.

L&L Hawaiian BBQ in Costa Mesa is a slice of paradise… if paradise includes mountains of rice and crispy chicken. The food is ridiculously tasty, and they don’t mess around with portion sizes—expect to roll out of there in a food coma. The BBQ chicken is like a sweet, smoky hug for your taste buds, and the loco moco? Let’s just say it’s a dish that might cause some serious commitment issues with other meals. The only downside is that your wallet might cry a little, but it’s worth the splurge. The service is quick, and the staff is friendly, even when you’re sweating from trying to finish that gigantic plate. 4 stars—because if I could eat here every day, I’d probably need a nap on the way home!
