Reviews
When we arrived (around 5pm), there were open tables, but we were told we had to be finished by 7pm due to pending reservations which was completely fine. In total, we ordered four drinks, two pizzas, olives, and a Caesar salad.
The Caesar salad was excellent fresh and flavorful and the drinks were also very good. The olives were okay. The pizza, however, was a bit underwhelming compared to our expectations.
Unfortunately, the service was the key part of our experience. While other staff members were friendly, our server seemed noticeably hostile toward us. He bumped into my small tote three times and slammed items onto the table more than once without saying “excuse me” or apologizing. As dinner went on, his tone seemed increasingly frustrated. We ended up leaving around a bit past 6pm.
I really wanted to love this place since it’s a new addition to a neighborhood I care about, and I hope this was just an off night.
We showed up a little early, before the doors opened, and got to watch the kind of quiet choreography that tells you a place takes its craft seriously. Fresh ingredients laid out with care. Stations wiped down until they shined. Someone even came outside to polish the windows, as if preparing a stage before the lights come up. You can’t teach that sort of devotion, it comes from pride.
Our reservation had been booked well in advance, and for good reason. Martha Dear is tiny, intimate, the sort of neighborhood spot where each plate feels personal.
We started with the Broccoli + Bagna Càuda, mini broccoli bathed in anchovy and butter, topped with a garlic crisp that hits like a soft crash of Mediterranean sea air and warmth. Simple ingredients, big soul.
Then the pizzas came out, each one a different hymn.
Halloumi, Spinach + Squash
Mozzarella, halloumi, spinach, garlic, squash purée, parmesan. A white pie that eats like autumn comfort wrapped in Greek sunshine. Silky, savory, and bright.
Pepperoni + Peppers
Tomato, mozzarella, onions, peppers, pepperoni, parmesan, basil. Their take on a classic, fiery, tangy, and honest. You taste the craft in every blister of the crust.
’Nduja + Cremini Crema
Mozzarella, cremini crema, ’nduja, mushroom, pickled Fresno, parmesan. Rich, smoky, spicy, earthy. We substituted red sauce base for crema. The kind of pie that lingers, the one you think about on the drive home and again the next morning.
Each dish felt like a conversation between Greece and the Mid-Atlantic, between technique and instinct, between comfort and curiosity. And every bite confirmed why people line up, why reservations vanish, and why locals call this a treasure in Mt. Pleasant.
Martha Dear isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a pilgrimage to flavor, lovingly tended by people who treat dough like an art form and service like a promise.
We’ll be back. And next time, we’re bringing more friends.
