We were in Old Town Alexandria and had heard good things about Bollywood Masala so we decided to give it a try. There were 3 of us and we ordered 3 entrees and an appetizer. That was sufficient but I was tempted to order more. The kale pakoda was fresh and crunchy and the entrees were on the money as well. I love spicy food and asked for my entree to pack a punch (that it did), while still being able to taste the food. The paneer was soft and the dal Bukhara was excellent. Overall a great experience and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend if if you’re in and around the area.

Friendly welcome but slow service. Not a cosy or atmospheric place. Took a while for the meal to be served after ordering and we didn’t feel that the chicken was cooked fresh. The black lentil dish was tasty. Naan bread was very greasy as was the roti. The vindaloo was very vinegary at the expense of flavour. When asked what spice level we wanted their range seemed to be too extreme. 1 to 30. How is the chef supposed to regulate the seasoning. Don’t think we will be making a return visit.

Yum, people! Really comfortable seats and a cute Old Town location. Grilled Tikka paneer was excellent, hubs and I shared this with our mains. I got a spicy lamb dish at spice level 15 and it was great, very spicy but not so much to make me uncomfortable and I am a pepperhead. Rice was super flavorful. Also enjoyed the garlic naan, I will definitely be back

Bollywood masala was an amazing dining experience for my Fiancé and I. The hospitality was unmatched. The servers all worked together to take orders and deliver food and drinks.

We started with the chicken pakora – 5/5

She had the butter masala with chicken (pictured) and loved it.

I had the tiki masala with chicken (pictured). It was fantastic! We also each had an order of garlic naan – delicious!

I really wanted to like Bollywood Masala, but the experience was a letdown from start to finish.

The food just didn’t hit. The flavors were flat, the dishes lacked depth, and there was a noticeable “not fresh” taste to several items that made it hard to enjoy the meal. Indian food should feel vibrant and aromatic — this felt dull and tired instead. Nothing stood out, and everything tasted kind of muted and forgettable.

Portions were another issue. The servings were surprisingly small for the price, and we honestly left still hungry, which is not something you expect after an Indian meal. It felt more like careful plating than actual value.

Service made the experience uncomfortable. The servers kept standing at a distance and watching instead of checking in or interacting, which felt awkward rather than attentive and created a weird vibe at the table.

After reading through other reviews, it’s clear we weren’t the only ones who had a bad experience — a lot of people mention the same issues with food quality, portions, and service. That made it even more disappointing because it doesn’t seem like an isolated incident.

What bothered me even more was learning that tips reportedly aren’t given to the servers, which is a huge red flag. If that’s true, it says a lot about how the place is run and how staff are treated.

If you know good Indian food, this place just doesn’t measure up. The quality, freshness, value, and overall experience all missed the mark. I don’t understand the 5-star reviews, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for authentic, well-made Indian cuisine.

Response to owner: For clarity: I’m a real customer, I paid for my own meal, and no one “hired” me to write anything — that accusation alone says more than my review ever could.

I didn’t think I needed to provide a full receipt breakdown to justify a dining experience. Reviews are based on how a customer feels about food quality, service, atmosphere, and value — not a forensic report of timestamps and itemized orders.

As for portions: we ordered full dishes, not just appetizers. The portions were small. That’s a valid observation, not confusion.

Regarding service: both things can be true — uncomfortable hovering and poor engagement. That’s not a contradiction, it’s an experience.

And if multiple customers are saying similar things across reviews, maybe the issue isn’t “fake reviewers” — maybe it’s a pattern worth reflecting on.

I’m always open to constructive dialogue, but dismissing criticism by accusing customers of being paid trolls isn’t accountability — it’s deflection.

We were three girls dining on New Year’s Eve, and the experience was fantastic. We ordered tofu makhni, chicken tikka masala, and another dish based on our server’s recommendation—and every dish was flavorful and absolutely delicious.

What really impressed us was the service. We noticed that our server was also handling bartending duties, yet he was incredibly patient, attentive, and kind throughout the evening. Even with the heavy New Year’s Eve rush, he took the time to help us choose dishes, answered our questions, and offered great recommendations. He never made us feel rushed and made sure we were enjoying everything.

Balancing both roles so smoothly while still providing such excellent service truly stood out. Great food and outstanding service made our night memorable. Highly recommended—we’ll definitely be back!

We made a reservation at Bollywood Masala, and everything exceeded our expectations. The food and service were both excellent. We ordered the butter chicken, lentils, chickpeas, vegetable samosas, and garlic naan—everything was honestly delicious.

Our servers were attentive, genuine, and had a great sense of humor, which made the experience even more enjoyable. For drinks, we had the Bollywood Lemonade and a Bellini—both had a perfect balance of alcohol and flavor.

Overall, we had a fantastic time and are definitely looking forward to coming back!

The very best Indian in the DMV! Big fan of their La Plata location, but was very excited that one opened up closer to home. Have tried so many things over the years and they’re all wonderful, but the Lasooni Gobi and Bollywood Special are constant showstoppers.

Bollywood Masala on King Street in Old Town Alexandria is a true gem for anyone who appreciates authentic Indian cuisine. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a vibrant atmosphere that sets the stage for a memorable dining experience.

The food is absolutely flavorful, showcasing a wonderful array of spices and traditional recipes that bring each dish to life. I particularly enjoyed the Biryani which was rich, aromatic, and perfectly cooked. The attention to detail in every dish is evident, making it clear that the chefs are passionate about their craft.

The service was equally commendable, with friendly staff who were knowledgeable about the menu and eager to offer recommendations. They made sure our dining experience was seamless from start to finish.

If you’re looking for a place that delivers on flavor, atmosphere, and service, Bollywood Masala is a must-visit.

Everything about our visit was amazing. The staff greeted us like old friends when we arrived. We had tikka masala, the Bollywood special, garlic naan, and Taj beers. All fantastic. I have been to Old Town several times and don’t know how I missed this place before! It is definitely a new favorite.
