Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s French Asian steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, Chef Tara reimagines classic French dishes through an Asian American lens—layering brightness, umami, and spice into every plate. The menu is grounded in fresh ingredients from local waters and farmers markets, with unexpected riffs that celebrate Tara’s upbringing.

The service was exceptional. At one point Pinay Chef Tara Monsod herself came out to serve it, and that was incredible. She was super nice, and even took the time to get a picture with us. The restaurant was beautiful, in a refurbished old car dealership. Wish we had one of the booths with more space, as our table was very tight right next to tables next to us – that part I did not like.
Overall we enjoyed our anniversary night and would go back here again. I highly recommend checking this place out.
Dinner was DELISH and Caleb was the best server! We had a friend that didn’t drink, but he brought her a very small glass of light champagne for her to sip on.
After dinner, we moved over to the bar for some cocktails and closed the place down.
Would definitely recommend this restaurant; food and cocktails were really good. The severs, bust boy, bartender and hosts were also very nice.
The food was truly incredible. Our favorite are the mussels, celery salad, steak and tuna tartare. I’ve tried most of their cocktails before but first time trying out their “Cha” (Japanese whisky+ green tea and calamansi) So, so good! I ordered 2! Service was absolutely impeccable. Le Coq is probably one the most beautiful restaurants in San Diego. Owner, Brian Malarkey stopping by our table totally topped the night! Can’t wait to come back!
The chicken liver mousse is silky and deeply flavorful, while the prawns are beautifully cooked with just the right balance of sweetness and char. The dry-aged ribeye is a showstopper — tender, deeply seasoned, and incredible with the sides of mushrooms & onions, creamed spinach, and pomme purée. It comes with a choice of one sauce, but honestly, just pay the extra $15 to get all five of the sauces to try.
End the meal with the chocolate mousse (was a nice birthday surprise for my mom and brother from the kitchen!) — it’s light, airy, and decadent all at once. While I think I would prefer to drive farther down to go to Animae, Le Coq delivers a dining experience that feels both special and effortless — an easy recommendation for anyone who loves great food and attention to craft.
The menu is impressive. We started with a the Chicken Liver Mousse, which was smooth and perfectly paired with grilled bread.
The Duck Confit was a standout: crispy skin, and flavorful meat.
I started off with a Steak Tartare and really enjoyed it. The cornichons were a great flavor component mixing with the steak. For my entrée I chose the Steak Frites and really enjoyed it. I especially like Au Poivre sauce and thought the steak was cooked perfectly. I also was a huge fan of their iced tea and was happy to see it comes with multiple refills. Overall, I would recommend this place especially for a date, but it is also great for friends or family.
Service was on the slower side (they were slammed that night), but the staff stayed friendly and professional. If you’re not in a rush, this is the perfect spot to sip some wine and enjoy a top-notch French meal. That filet? Chef’s kiss.
The food itself was good especially the lamb chop and branzino but it took over 30 minutes just to get our drinks. The cleanliness and overall vibe also didn’t feel festive or comfortable for a Thanksgiving celebration. I’m a big fan of Mont Blanc, but unfortunately the dessert was one of the worst versions I’ve ever had.
I chose this restaurant knowing it’s the sister restaurant of Animae, but this Thanksgiving experience was not what I had hoped for.
