My wife and I were looking for somewhere special to celebrate our anniversary, and Barbacoa absolutely delivered. From the second we stepped inside the cozy spot on Troost, we knew we’d picked the right place. The vibe is intimate and warm, perfect for a date night that feels elevated but still totally relaxed.
The service was outstanding. Our server was friendly and attentive. She made great recommendations and checked on us just the right amount, never rushed, never hovering. It made the whole evening feel effortless and special.
We started with cocktails, and they were fantastic. Creative, well-balanced, and the perfect way to kick things off. Then came the food, and every single dish was excellent. The flavors are bold, the portions are generous, and everything is cooked with such obvious care. We were both blown away by how delicious it all was.
We left smiling, full, and already talking about when we can come back. Barbacoa is now firmly on our “must-return” list in Kansas City. If you’re looking for a memorable meal (especially for a special occasion), do yourself a favor and book a table. You won’t regret it. I recommend getting a reservation, but it was also a busy weekend.

cocktails—out of this world, food—satisfied everything I was wanting and more and I will be dreaming of the tortillas for months. to top it all off service was absolutely incredible. Barbacoa is one of KC’s absolute best hidden gems. We were truly blown away by the authenticity of the flavors and the sophisticated cocktail pairings, elegant plating, and ambiance. We ordered the queso fundido (a can’t miss), the papas machas (if you like salsa macha, do it!), the smokey carnitas, the Mojo de Ajo Shrimp, and the Tres Leches (yes, we went big). The smokey carnitas were incredible: a true KC twist on a Mexican classic. The shrimp were swimming in the most delicious and complex sauce served with toasted French bread for dipping. Divine execution in all their dishes and in their hospitality, we met the owners and chef and were greeted with both humility and appreciation. My husband is from California and misses the diversity in upscale Mexican offerings in KC, so he was truly over the moon. We were delighted to experience Barbacoa for the first time tonight, but it certainly won’t be our last. Don’t hesitate. Bring your friends. It won’t disappoint.

Absolutely flawless “authentic” Mexican crossover. The mole is light in both color and taste, the chicken and beef succulent. The staff is attentive and friendly, and the bar; well stocked and imaginative. Broke our general 2 adult rule and brought a friend and 2 x 10 year old kids and they loved it as well. Highly recommended! If you are looking for higher spice levels, ask or bring your own sauce cause I doubt the staff or owner would mind. Thank you Guapo, this place is ‘fire’ as the kids would say.

3 visits in and I’m still so impressed with the flavor, quality and consistency of the menu at Barbacoa. A total gem in Kansas City. Everything has been amazing from the cocktails to the apps to the mains to dessert every time.
My only small note is I don’t love the squat wine glasses- a bit difficult to manage and doesn’t feel right for wine.

This place is a hit. Check my past reviews on other places, I’m a rough reviewer. The food here is amazing, extremely fresh ingredients and chef inspired flare to every dish that really makes you feel like you are receiving way more than what you paid for. Everything me and my wife got pretty much knocked our socks off, the chicken was some of the best I’ve ever had, the suadero was also high ranked. I just moved from Texas so that says something. The deserts are to die for and the service was awesome. 100% would recommend this to anyone I know and look forward to trying more items on the menu.

Barbacoa is a wonderful restaurant with absolutely delicious food. We took our daughter and son-in-law there for his birthday. He had read a lot of reviews and researched beforehand but none of us had ever been there. It was such a great experience. We look forward to going back.
