Fading red stucco walls on the sleepier side of Fairfield Station hide a restaurant that has been serving up Lao and Isan Thai cuisine for two decades. Open the screen door into Song Fang Khong and you’ll find a small but cheerful restaurant. Decor is minimal, mostly dish photographs which push Thai prawn cakes hard. A brick archway between dining room and kitchen suggests the space started its run as Italian.
The first thing to land is a plate of seasonal greens—cabbage, mint, and water spinach—closely followed by a basket of sticky rice ($5). Most everything is eaten with a pinch of sticky rice, and some salad greens. Barbeque is a big part of Laotian street food, and here the grilled pork neck ($17) is particularly good. Lao sausage ($16) is different at every restaurant. Here it’s an enjoyable, rice-dense pork sausage with a bright spike of lemongrass.
A plate of market price pipis ($25) stir-fried with Thai basil arrived steaming hot in an otherwise indistinct savoury brown sauce. Not one bivalve had left its shell, and none of the casings were shattered. They forgot our beef salad, but the portions were generous enough to mean we were happy for them to simply to take it off the bill. Prices were very reasonable: lunch for two with two coconut waters ($7/each) came to fewer than eighty bucks.

Song Fang Khong – Authentic Lao Flavors Beside Fairfield Station
I’ve been coming to Song Fang Khong in Fairfield since 2016, and it has never once let me down. This long-standing traditional Lao restaurant, located right next to Fairfield Station, has become my go-to spot whenever I crave something spicy, flavorful, and comforting.
The food here is consistently excellent — rich, bold, and full of authentic Lao taste. One of my absolute favorites is their Lao sausage . It’s beautifully grilled — crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, with a wonderful aroma of lemongrass, garlic, and herbs. It’s always served with a generous plate of fresh vegetables and herbs, which balance out the richness perfectly.
There are also many types of Lao salads that are truly special — from the classic papaya salad bursting with chili and lime, to more unique combinations that blend spicy, sour, and savory flavors in a way only Lao cuisine can. Every bite feels vibrant and full of life.
Over the years, nothing about this place has changed — the food remains delicious, authentic, and affordable. If you love spicy, traditional Lao dishes, Song Fang Khong is a must-visit spot in Fairfield. It’s one of those rare gems that never loses its soul.

The food is amazing. I love the Goi Tom Song (raw prawn salad). The space is tight but they have extra seating upstairs. The food is unapologetic. Hot, spicy, umami packed with Lao Thai flavours. Staff are great but it took awhile to serve the lemon iced tea we ordered which is house made. We had to remind them a few times. We dined a little bit after 12pm on a Saturday but got seats immediately.

Let me start by saying this is my new go to Laos joint in the area. I ordered takeaway via phone and was ready in 10mins. The food is very tasty and delicious and great value – much better pricing than next door to be honest.
The quail was crispy and not dry. The ox tongue was very tender! Paw paw salad was CRUNCHY! Sticky rice was SOFT and not hard! Lao sausage was not too fatty, just the right amount.

The food is authentic from Thai-Lao. Some food like sausage is so unique and can’t find anywhere else. My family have been eating here for 10+ years and the food remains the same quality and taste. Also the price is not too high, as I notice they didn’t put the price up too much in the past few years.
The service is like you visit the home made kitchen. All staffs are friendly, the chef sometimes came to serve the food and had a little chat for feedback.
The shop get busy in the afternoon. They got around 7-8 tables so it can be limited seats during peak hours.

I remember this place was nice years ago. I went today with my partner and was very disappointed. We ordered 4 dishes. The pad Thai was too sweet and soggy. The crunchy fried rice was too hard when it was supposed to be crunchy. The ox tongue was too smelly, it had a strong raw beef odour. The Tom yum combination soup was nothing special either. Overall, not very nice.

Tasty and delicious Laotian dishes. Definitely worth the trip to Fairfield. Food comes out fast as well. The Thai Style Paw Paw Salad (mild) was too overly spicy for my liking, but it was still delicious.

Good was nice, but not as great as I thought it’d be. Perhaps it’s just been too long since I’ve had Loas in the area, but the crunchy fried rice was more hard than crunchy and the Thai salad lacks freshness about it. Interior definitely has that old school dirty Asian ‘charm’ about the place.

We were so happy to eat here. The flavours were great and everything was perfectly cooked. Service was friendly and charming. We ordered extra to take home as it was quite far, but worth it. The interior is very plain, but who cares when the food is so good.
