Hop pot grill is a Jamaican restaurant, I recently visited this restaurant and it was a wonderful experience. I was greeted by the warm aroma of authentic Jamaican cook, food, which made my mouth water in anticipation. As I chat with the cashier and the chef, I couldn’t help but admire the eclectic decor that celebrated our Jamaican culture. The friendly cashier was lovely in every way, it was so difficult to choose just one dish. Overall, the menu offered a delightful array of options, from jerk chicken to curried goat, each promising a burst of flavor. By the time I finished my meal, I knew I would love to returning to Hop Pot Grill for another unforgettable culinary journey.

I wish I could get my money back. I spent well over an hour browsing through Uber Eats, deciding what to order and settled on Hot Pot Grill. Major mistake! The shrimp salad was nothing more than welted shredded lettuce that’s used for subs with a few carrots and cherry tomatoes tossed in. Furthermore, the shrimp was miniature. I also paid for extra pineapple jerk sauce and didn’t receive it. It’s a one and done for me.

As a proud Jamaican, finding authentic Jamaican food that truly hits the spot is rare but Hot Pot Grill not missing a beat! From the moment I walked in, the warm and welcoming atmosphere made me feel right at home. The staff provided top-tier customer service, kid friendly, attentive, and genuinely passionate about making sure every guest leaves satisfied.

Now let’s talk about the food. Every bite was a trip back home. The jerk chicken was perfectly seasoned with that smoky, spicy kick we all know and love. The oxtail was fall-off-the-bone tender, rich in flavor, and served with rice and peas that tasted like Sunday dinner at Granny’s. Even the festival and plantain were fried to golden perfection.

Hot Pot Grill doesn’t just serve food they serve love, culture, and heritage on a plate. If you’re looking for real Jamaican flavor in a welcoming environment, this is the spot. I’ll be back again and again.

Big up to the whole team at Hot Pot Grill unnu a do it big!

I ordered Curry chicken with roti ($8) and unfortunately the roti was HARD and small in portion size. The curry chicken was lacking in flavor and was served with red beans and rice which was dry! Definitely disappointed in the meal.

Original post (02/28/19):
I’ve ordered the curry shrimp roti & curry vegetable roti from this place, both amazing! The shrimp was perfect – tender, juicy and not over cooked like every other place I’ve ordered from, including Iris Cafe (who had rubbery, over cooked shrimp in their roti).

Update: 03/01/19
(All orders thru DoorDash app)
When I first ordered from here on 2/15 I got the curry shrimp roti & requested extra potatoes. Everything was perfect. For my 2nd order on 2/28 I assumed potatoes came with all roti so when I placed my order (veggie roti) I was disappointed to find no potatoes. No big deal b/c I figured I assumed wrong. However today (3/1) I placed a 3rd order for shrimp roti & requested extra potatoes as I did with my first order. I got a call from a guy at the store about 20 minutes after placing my order; he said the order he received did not specify if I chose rice & peas or not for my side. Confused, I said the app didn’t offer any sides, as no roti I’ve gotten from Hot Pot comes with a side. The employee then tells me that I couldn’t choose a side b/c they don’t offer roti (which doesn’t make sense since I had just ordered roti), AND proceeded to tell me that they don’t put potatoes in the roti, just vegetables (again doesn’t make sense as I requested them in my first order & got them with no fuss). I then told him that my email confirmation in fact says curry shrimp roti, and that is had potatoes before. He said I didn’t, but that he’d do it anyway.

All in all, I’ll no longer be spending money here. Order was placed at 12:05 pm w/25 min wait time (I live across the street), according to the ticket on my bag the order was entered at 12:35 pm, and arrived to me at 12:52 pm. First place to not offer potatoes with roti standard & after being told I’d get extra potatoes, I ended up with a total of FIVE SLICED PIECES, not even the equivalent of half a potato. Also not sure why this time they didn’t know I ordered roti. I noticed in DoorDash it doesn’t specify roti after ordering, but in my email it says roti. In UberEats however it DOES specify roti in the name of the item after ordering. Attached plenty of pics with my email confirmation compared to the order confirmation, as well as the difference in DoorDash vs UberEats menus, the food and (lack of) potatoes. (Cropped out my address in various screenshots)

As a Caribbean person from New York, I’m always looking for good and authentic Caribbean food here in the DMV, and this spot has hit it on the nail for me when it comes to Jamaican food. Averagely priced with a good lunch special. I’ve had breakfast lunch and dinner from here

The Caribbean spices fill the air as soon as the door opens, so you know dishes are well seasoned. Great customer service from the cashier to the owner. Will be back to sample other dishes.

My and my daughter’s favorite place to get oxtails and jerk whatever. Not big, just a place with steady traffic and good food. Decent serving sizes. Do expect a little wait for your food as they aren’t keeping things under a heat lamp waiting for customers to pick it up. Call ahead may be the best route for sike folks, but I haven’t minded waiting as the staff are welcoming and place is calm.
