We’ve been here a few times and the food, service, and atmosphere is always exceptional. The sushi is well made with fresh ingredients and feels light. We always top it off with the steak ramen, which has the perfect level of spice and leaves us satisfied without feeling full.

Lovely place with great food! Their Valentine’s Day decorations were very cute and they had a few themed specials. The miso soup, Black Dragon roll, and Black Pearl rolls were all very good. Cute atmosphere and the service was fast although perhaps felt a little rushed. Would love to return for a delicious and quick bite to eat!

By far our favorite Japanese restaurant. They have a ton of sushi options but they also have a lot of non-sushi options so there is definitely something for everyone. The food is always delicious, and the hospitality is great! It appears to be family/locally owned, and our usual waiter Alex always provides us with a great experience.

Located in a seemingly random suburban strip mall, one could easily overlook this place. Its service was attentive without being intrusive and its holiday decorations were festive. The food was mostly good except several pieces of sashimi were still frozen inside, which, for a Japanese restaurant, is not acceptable. Aside from one minor issue, ramen, maki rolls, and miso soup were all delicious. Definitely recommended.

In two visits to this restaurant, they never brought out an appetizer ordered but charged both times. The way their staff handle these mistakes makes the customer feel as though they’re they are trying to pull a fast one. Really not cool.

Kyoto Garden is a serene and charming spot that blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with a warm, inviting atmosphere. From the moment you walk in, the tranquil décor—soft lighting, natural wood tones, and subtle floral accents—creates a relaxing escape from the bustle outside. The staff are attentive without being intrusive, offering helpful suggestions and maintaining a pleasant, efficient flow throughout the meal.

The food is where Kyoto Garden really shines. The sushi is fresh and skillfully prepared, with clean flavors and beautiful presentation. The tempura arrives perfectly crisp without being greasy, and the miso soup has a rich, comforting depth. While a few dishes could use a touch more seasoning or creativity to push them into five-star territory, the overall experience is consistently satisfying and memorable. Kyoto Garden is absolutely worth a visit for anyone craving high-quality Japanese cuisine in a peaceful setting.

This was a pretty decent Japanese restaurant. Quality and prices aren’t the best but they have nice decor and the portion sizes are very generous. I guarantee you won’t go starving if you order entrees and sushi rolls. I think they try to add some “fancy items” but they should just focus on keeping it more simple. This is far from being fine dining. I got the tonkatsu entree, green turtle speciality roll, and a scallop sake shooter. Tonkatsu was a little dry but still edible. They probably shouldn’t have cooked it too long. Green turtle specialty roll was good. It’s shrimp over bbq freshwater eel and it does contain some wasabi mayo. Everything was balanced, not too much rice. The scallop sake shooter was a bit of a letdown. Maybe the oyster would have gone down easier. The scallop took a bit to slide down from the glass to your mouth. It does have a bit of spice to it. Overall, a 3. Service was okay, they could be more attentive like refilling waters and asking if we need anything.

Tonkatsu – 3.5
Green turtle – 5
Scallop sake shooter – 2

PLEASE do not make the same mistake that I did and eat at this restaurant due to these outlandish positive 5 star reviews.

My mom and I originally planned to dine at a Local Thai place but it was closed so we decided to check out this spot nearby.

Inside decor was nice & spacious and one male server was working the main dining area, but that’s as good as it gets when it comes to pros. We have no grievance or complaints with the server as he did a good job of taking our orders and checking in.

The food was appalling to the point where my mom & I were stunned by what they were serving. Even for the American diners that are used to “Asian fusion,” this was nowhere close to being edible in the way that it was presented or tasted.

*APPETIZER- Chicken karaage
“A popular Japanese fried chicken dish made with bite-sized chicken pieces marinated in a soy and ginger sauce and coated in a crispy potato starch batter”

* They butchered this Japanese classic chicken appetizer. They didn’t do the chicken from Harrison poultry service by coating it in some light tempura batter that didn’t stick to the meat & fell apart upon arrival. It had none of that delicious caramel color coated batter on the outside. Please refer to the pics- that’s all the proof you need

*SPICY TUNA, RAINBOW ROLL & MISO
*we ordered our go-to rolls as it was a good way to gauge how fresh the fish is, the rice texture, and overall taste

*KYOTO, how could you send out the rolls looking like this ? You had plenty of sushi chefs on deck, it wasn’t that busy of a night & yet, the presentation was beyond subpar.
Upon arrival, my mom & I could tell the fish was not fresh- the color of the salmon, shrimp, tuna were muted and had no shine or flavor, the sushi rice was cold and rubbery, and the rolls were poorly made. Photo for reference.
Also, how could you mess up the miso soup out of all the food items ?
On both of our soups, there was one sad tiny tofu, there was no green onions in there, it was served luke warm & it tasted worse than “ready made” miso packets that they serve at the Asian store.

If you’re looking for a hot tea to go with your meal, don’t bother with their $2 green tea that they serve in a tiny mug on its own without a hot pot of water.

The server noticed how we were not enjoying our meal and ended up asking if everything was alright at the end of our meal. We discussed our complaints & stated it was not due to his service but rather the quality of the food.
The manager or other staff members did not come by to follow up or inquire about our meal.

Ugh, this place was an utter disappointment. There’s not a lot of great sushi places in the suburbs, but this place is a big NO. Save yourself the hassle and go to Renga Tei in Lincolnwood where you’ll find good quality of sushi, appetizers, and real matcha tea.

My mom and l left hungry and disappointed, and ended up having some food and hot tea at home.

Kyoto, this was a huge let down. We saw the male manager who was helping clean tables, but there was zero customer service from him. Other diners deserve to know what type of food is being served at this so called Asian restaurant.

This has become my favorite Japanese restaurant ever! It used to be called skipjack, but now it’s Kyoto garden and has a new owner and staff after the pandemic (I know it’s not quite over). The rolls are unique and delicious, I’ve never seen quite a few of them before. The service was excellent despite probably being staffed less than they would like. They have incredible steak which I will definitely be ordering again. I spoke to the owners and apparently they have a stacked bench of very experienced sushi chefs. They’re definitely showing their creativity and experience through the menu! I’m selfishly hoping this place doesn’t blow up so I won’t have to wait for a table…
