We had a wonderful dinner at San Mezcal tonight! The food was some of the best we had at San Miguel. I had the burger and it was so good – soft toasted bread, juicy and made by hand. My husband is a big fan of Mezcal and Julio gave my husband a tasting of a few of his favorites . Great service and ambience – a bit of a hidden gem but the local expat community seems well aware of it – the small restaurant was fully booked! Try the tamale chocolate corn dessert – so good!

Had an amazing time at San Mezcal. We were lucky to sit at the bar and be served by owner Julio whom took time to talk to us and explain the mezcal’s in our flights. The food was all delicious, service great, and ambience perfect. Truly one of the best nights in SMA! Thanks to Julio for being a great bartender and host!

Just excellent, the drinks, the food, the service. We went to San Mezcal twice during our 4-day stay in SMdA, mid February. Highly recommended.

How we missed this amazing place is beyond me. But so glad we found it. We tried some amazing mezcales reposados from Zacatecas and tried the flight. Must try the Robalo ceviche and the tamale dessert/postre!!! Been coming here for 7 yrs and we missed it but now we know where to come.

San Mezcal, located at Recreo 88 in the heart of San Miguel de Allende’s Centro, is a mezcal lover’s dream, boasting an impressive selection of over 150 mezcals. While the majority hail from Oaxaca — as any aficionado might expect — I was drawn to the distinctive local offerings from Guanajuato and San Luis Potosí. If you visit, be sure to try one made from the region’s signature agave, *A. salmiana*, which delivers a unique and expressive flavor profile. The bar itself is clean, inviting, and run by friendly, knowledgeable staff who make exploring the menu a pleasure. While San Mezcal also offers food, my visit focused solely on savoring the spirit, making it an ideal spot for a dedicated mezcal tasting journey. For anyone seeking to experience the depth and diversity of Mexico’s agave heritage, San Mezcal should be at the top of your list.

Had reviewed this two years ago … but had never tried their food. The cocktails were amazing and the food delicious. It’s a small but intimate space with delightful staff. When the shepherds pie arrived I thought it was going to be to small – but the lamb was rich and dense in flavor. I left happy and full. The stout at 9% was great.
The cocktails with Mezcal and activated carbon were fabulous.

This place rocks. Food portions are a bit small but the drinks make up for it.
