Amanda and Kyle (owners) and Katie were amazing. The food is first class. Kyle is an extraordinary chef. The menu was really interesting and his culinary talent is one of the best I have experienced around the country. Small town restaurant NO WAY. I loved the three floors. Lower level cozy cocktail happy hour lounge with friends or a date. Main floor dining and bar. 2nd floor had a very nice eating area. The old building architecture was charming and the owners build out was modern and edgy. We can’t wait to go back and make this a monthly ritual. We are blessed to have such an upscale restaurant in Grand Rapids! Wow!

I travel frequently for work and found myself in Grand Rapids on a Sunday evening. I found this place and gave it a try, and it was so exceptional I felt I needed to leave a review.

Having eaten in many nice places around the world, I can say that this place would not seem out of place in a big city like New York or Toronto. Everything was extremely high quality and cooked to perfection, the service was friendly and the cocktail I had was very unique and delicious. Prices were also very reasonable, with an appetiser, a large steak, dessert, and two drinks coming out at around $100+ tip.

A random Sunday night dinner in a small town turned into one of the best meals I’ve ever had. 10/10 exceptional and an absolute gem.

What an awesome evening! We started with fabulous drinks, we shared one an item from each of the courses. We can’t decide what was our favorite! Staff were extremely friendly, helpful and nice. Food was incredible. Highly recommend drinks and dinner at The Pines!

If there happens to be an open reservation at The Pines Restaurant take it! Every little detail is so meticulously thought out and planned – from the quality of the ingredients, to the imaginative cocktails, and the beautiful ambience! It is elevated fine dining at its best, yet unpretentious. The service has always been so friendly and attentive. I love that many of the ingredients are locally sourced and that the menu changes regularly to use whatever produce is freshest. Also, most of the dishes are gluten free. Dining at The Pines Restaurant is unlike any other dining experience in the area, and we are so lucky to have such a place in our community! I cannot wait to go back and see what new dishes will be on the menu next time!

We chose to dine at The Pines based on a recommendation from a couple staying at the same bed and breakfast we were.

The menu is one page – but has many options. There are five courses to choose items from in any way you desire.

We started out with Shrimp Bisque and popovers. The Shrimp Bisque is a must-have. It’s got a slight spice to it that hits perfectly. The popovers were good, we enjoyed one dip over the other.

Second course was Beets and goat cheese. Don’t let this simple description fool you – I’m convinced that even if you’re not a beet person – you’d love these. They were awesome.

Third course was a wild mushroom “risotto”. Wow. This dish was phenomenal and was only second to the bisque for us.

For our main course, my partner chose the steak, and I chose the chicken. We were later informed that they were out of the steak due to a miscount. My partner’s second choice was halibut, which they were also out of. When he asked about the braised beef – sadly that was also out – so he settled on the pork chop.

Out of all of the courses, this course was the one that was a bit of a miss for us. My dish was chicken breast, mushroom sauce, a parsnip, and some crispy parsnip on top. The dish wasn’t bad – but it felt as though it could have done more. After the insanely flavorful courses we had preceding the main course, this was a bit of a let down. My partner said his pork chop was decent – but there were bites that were too salty.

We didn’t opt for dessert (SO FULL!) but we did enjoy a glass of wine and two cocktails. They were all good, but the high water pants/jeans (we can’t agree on the name ) was AMAZING.

The biggest takeaway for us was the impeccable attention to detail we experienced. Our server and the other serving team members (bringing water, clearing plates, etc) made us feel very pampered and well cared for.

There is a speakeasy in the basement – but they had a jazz concert and there was a cover charge so we missed out on seeing it.

Perfect date night spot. High end without being pretentious. Our bill was less than $200.00, which felt appropriate for the service we experienced and food served.

Our dinner at The Pines was magical from start to finish. We started the evening in The Understory, their bar area, where we enjoyed Prohibition-era cocktails—smooth, perfectly crafted, and complemented by a fantastic, immersive ambiance. We got a glimpse of the historic safe turned wine cooler.

For dinner, we were seated beneath a stunning piece of art. Our server was wonderful; she shared that the piece was by a local artist who also designed The Pines’ logo, and she showed us a few more of his works throughout the building.
The food itself was the highlight: we sampled a variety of dishes, and the entire meal unfolded spectacularly. Impeccable service and a memorable environment made this a flawless night. Highly recommend!!

Such a lovely place. Nicole was our server and she did great, but all of the servers were very attentive and helpful. The atmosphere was relaxed and casual but felt upscale and food/prices reflect that elevated vibe.

I cannot tell you how impressed we were with The Pines. We have eaten at nearly every restaurant in Grand Rapids and there is nothing else like it.

We didn’t have a reservation, but decided to try our luck and see if we could walk in. The main floor dining area was full, but they still made room for us at the bar. Matt, the bartender, was incredibly friendly, skilled, and knowledgeable about both drinks and food. Max (server) and Amanda (owner) were super friendly and helpful as well!

We split 4 dishes: the lox, the Bryndlewood tomato, the wild rice risotto and the goat cheese ravioli. Matt made sure that each dish came out at just the right time when we finished the dish before. Each was incredibly creative, delicious, fun and fresh. Portion sizes are really good (especially for a fine dining restaurant). My favorite was the tomato, but each was super yummy and unique.

We’re not usually dessert people, but hearing Matt talk about the chocolate cake with dehydrated peanut butter crumble that rehydrates in your mouth, we knew we had to try it. It was everything he said it would be. We even debated having a second dessert because it was so good and interesting.

We also visited The Understory (the basement bar). It had a super-cool speakeasy style vibe and wonderful service. I had the “Cosmonaut” which was very cool with different components (one inside the hollow ice) that mixed together as I enjoyed.

We will definitely be back!

Sat up upstairs- was great. Chill down tempo vibes for music. Wait staff was great- we haven’t received our 4th course yet and I’m already making a review- the Pork Belly was by far the best pork I have ever had in my life. Great job.

And those popovers!

First off, arrived early to have a drink in the speakeasy. Great atmosphere and a good drink. Then upstairs for dinner. Had popovers which were unfortunately burnt! Followed by risotto, which was very good! Also had Cauliflower which was OK. I cannot speak for the 5 other people, but I ordered the Steak. It arrived not warm, but cold. Tasted very bland also, not impressed. Should have sent it back, but was afraid it would take another 45 min to receive. Overall I’d say it was MEH, but will give another chance in the future. When a meal is over $200+ for two, the food should be great. Service only goes so far. BTW, the service was very good.
