Having eaten in many nice places around the world, I can say that this place would not seem out of place in a big city like New York or Toronto. Everything was extremely high quality and cooked to perfection, the service was friendly and the cocktail I had was very unique and delicious. Prices were also very reasonable, with an appetiser, a large steak, dessert, and two drinks coming out at around $100+ tip.
A random Sunday night dinner in a small town turned into one of the best meals I’ve ever had. 10/10 exceptional and an absolute gem.
The menu is one page – but has many options. There are five courses to choose items from in any way you desire.
We started out with Shrimp Bisque and popovers. The Shrimp Bisque is a must-have. It’s got a slight spice to it that hits perfectly. The popovers were good, we enjoyed one dip over the other.
Second course was Beets and goat cheese. Don’t let this simple description fool you – I’m convinced that even if you’re not a beet person – you’d love these. They were awesome.
Third course was a wild mushroom “risotto”. Wow. This dish was phenomenal and was only second to the bisque for us.
For our main course, my partner chose the steak, and I chose the chicken. We were later informed that they were out of the steak due to a miscount. My partner’s second choice was halibut, which they were also out of. When he asked about the braised beef – sadly that was also out – so he settled on the pork chop.
Out of all of the courses, this course was the one that was a bit of a miss for us. My dish was chicken breast, mushroom sauce, a parsnip, and some crispy parsnip on top. The dish wasn’t bad – but it felt as though it could have done more. After the insanely flavorful courses we had preceding the main course, this was a bit of a let down. My partner said his pork chop was decent – but there were bites that were too salty.
We didn’t opt for dessert (SO FULL!) but we did enjoy a glass of wine and two cocktails. They were all good, but the high water pants/jeans (we can’t agree on the name ) was AMAZING.
The biggest takeaway for us was the impeccable attention to detail we experienced. Our server and the other serving team members (bringing water, clearing plates, etc) made us feel very pampered and well cared for.
There is a speakeasy in the basement – but they had a jazz concert and there was a cover charge so we missed out on seeing it.
Perfect date night spot. High end without being pretentious. Our bill was less than $200.00, which felt appropriate for the service we experienced and food served.
For dinner, we were seated beneath a stunning piece of art. Our server was wonderful; she shared that the piece was by a local artist who also designed The Pines’ logo, and she showed us a few more of his works throughout the building.
The food itself was the highlight: we sampled a variety of dishes, and the entire meal unfolded spectacularly. Impeccable service and a memorable environment made this a flawless night. Highly recommend!!
We didn’t have a reservation, but decided to try our luck and see if we could walk in. The main floor dining area was full, but they still made room for us at the bar. Matt, the bartender, was incredibly friendly, skilled, and knowledgeable about both drinks and food. Max (server) and Amanda (owner) were super friendly and helpful as well!
We split 4 dishes: the lox, the Bryndlewood tomato, the wild rice risotto and the goat cheese ravioli. Matt made sure that each dish came out at just the right time when we finished the dish before. Each was incredibly creative, delicious, fun and fresh. Portion sizes are really good (especially for a fine dining restaurant). My favorite was the tomato, but each was super yummy and unique.
We’re not usually dessert people, but hearing Matt talk about the chocolate cake with dehydrated peanut butter crumble that rehydrates in your mouth, we knew we had to try it. It was everything he said it would be. We even debated having a second dessert because it was so good and interesting.
We also visited The Understory (the basement bar). It had a super-cool speakeasy style vibe and wonderful service. I had the “Cosmonaut” which was very cool with different components (one inside the hollow ice) that mixed together as I enjoyed.
We will definitely be back!
And those popovers!
