Have you ever had food so authentic it actually made you homesick for a place that wasn’t even your home? That’s exactly what happened when I first walked into Shahi Catering Bellerose, NY 11426.
I was craving something that would remind me of my time living in Hyderabad, where my Indian friends would invite me to their homes for those soul-warming, grandma-cooked meals that no restaurant could replicate. Or so I thought—until I discovered this hidden gem.
Walking in, I was skeptical. Could any place in Long Island really capture those flavors? The cafeteria-style setup looked promising—exactly like the local spots I frequented in India. But the real test would be in the taste.
I ordered the 3-item lunch combo plate: paneer tikka masala, mixed veg, and lentil soup with Tandoori roti/naan . The moment they handed me that steaming plate, the aroma of perfectly balanced spices hit me, and suddenly I wasn’t in Long Island anymore—I was back in India.
Although, I must confess… My favorite items on the menu are the Shahi Paneer, Veg mix , palak paneer and Yellow Dal transport me back to those family dinners halfway across the world. And don’t get me started on their Tandoori roti/naan—I gladly pay extra for it every time!
What sets Shahi’s apart isn’t just the food—it’s the Didi Sarabjit and her son Dilraj Paag (owners) Chef Makhan pagg who treat you like extended family, taking time to chat as if you’re sitting in their home kitchen. They cook everything fresh, meaning they can adjust the spice level to your preference (though I always ask for mine authentically spicy). Ask for mint and tamarind chutney, these will elevate your taste buds experience.
Pro tip: If you’re in a hurry, use their convenient pickup window—you don’t even have to leave your car! But honestly, you’ll want to come inside just for the warm welcome.
In a city with plenty of Indian restaurants, Shahi’s is where you go when you want to taste what Indian families actually eat at home. Sometimes the most authentic experiences are found in the most unassuming places!
The quality of the food, generous portions, and friendly service make this place a must-visit. If you’re craving authentic and delicious Indian food, look no further. Highly recommend!
Service here is top as well. Takes short time to have food on the table. The owner here is quite a nice guy!
I ordered goat curry and garlic naan, but what I received was half-cooked goat, bland curry, and plain naan instead of garlic naan. On top of that, they overcharged me for the full price of garlic naan and properly cooked goat curry. Completely unacceptable quality and service. I won’t be ordering from here again and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
AYCE lunch buffet with my dad and it was sooooo worth it. The goat curry was sooooo good. We need to support our local restaurants! They keep our community alive
especialy non-veg lovers
