Was walking along and wanted to grab a quick bite so stepped into this place. Ordered the roast beef mushroom Swiss sandwich and came with a side of roast pepper soup that was quite good. Service was friendly, prices were reasonable and typical bar atmosphere. I appreciated the responsible bartender telling one of the patron he had enough to drink and wouldn’t serve him anymore. Only catch is they only take cash.

Listen. I walked into John’s expecting “small-town dive bar vibes” and instead found what can only be described as the spiritual headquarters of good decisions turning into GREAT stories. The drinks? So reasonably priced I double-checked the menu to make sure it wasn’t printed in 2003. The bartenders? Absolute legends. They somehow remember your name, your drink, and probably your childhood pet by round two. Suspicious. Impressive. Terrifying.

You might feel like an outsider for just a moment, but that quickly fades. This place hums with the spirit of a Prohibition-era bar, where the staff greet you like old friends and know their craft inside out. I’ve heard stories about John, the original owner who passed in the 1980s, and it’s clear the current owner carries on his legacy. The crowd leans older, though you’ll spot some younger faces mingling in. There’s a sense of community here, with regulars exchanging nods and laughter. Drinks pack a punch and are worth every penny. The food surprises you with its quality, and the live music always feels handpicked for true music lovers. I suspect someone on staff is a musician, given the thoughtful selections. Every visit leaves me feeling right at home, and I can’t wait to return.

Was there for the private Stolpa’s wedding reception…service was great considering the folks that attended. Such great music provided to all of us. Was amazing! Congratulations to the Stolpa’s once again! And thankyou Johns Bar for allowing this wonderful Stolpa fest!

One of the bartenders is a crotchety old guy, but damn if that doesn’t make it feel like a good old fashione dive! ❤️

Why would the bartender be using a stall with a patron and leaving the stall while wiping his nose and clearing his throat. I can tell you they were only in there for a minute or so. Then the same patron engages into a convo with my wife and was creepy and wide eyed. This place needs to clean it up. That patron was quick to “alert” others about the fact that he asked me what I did for a living ……I’m in law enforcement. they all seemed really interested to stare. made the joint a bit nervous I’d say. and let you bar tender know that the drink rail is there for a reason. A glass being mixed by a bartender should never leave sight of a patron.

Stopped her for a few drinks when staying in la crosse, was a great night and the bar man gave us a drinks token which was really nice. And as I’m from Scotland we felt very welcomed here.
