My husband and I have been on 2 dates here and I see many more in our future. The vibes are cozy and warm, the food is DELICIOUS and the service is quick and attentive. I personally am not a huge fan of mobile ordering from the table- which they were at least using for our New Years meal- but it kept things running smoothly and we were checked on several times. 🙂 this is a great local spot with an elevated feel!

Gatewood House continues to be one of those places that quietly does everything right. It’s back after being only open for special events for a couple of years post-covid.

We tried several of the specials and left impressed across the board. The mulligatawny soup was especially memorable — deeply flavorful, warming, and clearly house-made.

The deviled eggs were elevated without being overworked. Creamy filling, tender brisket on top, and just enough pickled red onion to cut through the richness — balanced, clean, and genuinely delicious.

The Gatewood chili wings were another standout. Perfectly cooked, great smoke, and the chili honey lime sauce hit that ideal sweet-heat note without overpowering the wings themselves. Crisp, sticky, and very more-ish.

For an entrée, the mushroom & Swiss burger delivered exactly what you want from a pub-style burger — juicy patty, savory mushrooms, melted Swiss, caramelized onions, and garlic aioli that pulled everything together. It felt indulgent but still well-constructed, not sloppy or overly heavy.

Between the food, the relaxed but polished atmosphere, and the sense that care goes into the menu, Gatewood House remains a reliable go-to in Hillsborough.

A great spot for both comfort food lovers and people who appreciate subtle, well-executed twists on classics.
Highly recommend.

First timers. A true hidden gem in the Hillsborough area. We ordered the chili lime wings, fried catfish plate, chicken gumbo, smoked gouda mac & cheese, bacon fat garlic green beans…and beignets for dessert. Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection, in addition to enjoyable service from all staff. Thank you all for taking care of us during our visit, you haven’t seen the last of us.

I’m not one to typically do reviews but after my family’s experience tonight I felt that it was necessary. In short terms the owner of this restaurant needs to work on some customer service.

This evening my wife’s family and I went to Farmhouse restaurant which is a steakhouse we have been to several times for several years with consistent service and food. Unfortunately Farmhouse was very busy and with the young kids we had, we needed to find some food and landed on going to Gatewood.

The atmosphere is pretty neat, they have an open seated bar along with several room in an older model house with tables all around. You order your food on your phone with little to no server attending to your table. I’m not usually one with issues of ordering on an app but at times with an expensive menu I prefer to have a server assigned for the money you are planning to spend.

We started with drinks that took roughly 20 minutes but we were okay with due to the amount of people that were there at the time. I orders a NY Strip and my wife ordered a filet. My wife ordered medium temperature and I ordered medium rare. Both steaks were overcooked (Happens and we get it). My wife went and found someone working and wanted to address that the steak was overcooked. A little background on my wife is that she had worked in several restaurants over the years and complaints on food are expected and are normally fixed without much issue.

This evening when my wife had made mention of her overcooked steak the owner came to our table and said that he could see pink in the steak meaning it was cooked to medium. My wife requested another steak to be cooked to a temperature less than what was present and the owner/chef was willing to cook another but kept making mention that they originally cooked it the way she asked.

After 40 minutes of waiting on the next steak the Owner/Chef showed up with the steak after everyone was done eating and my wife just asked for a box.l due to the time it took. The owner asked “Have you ever worked in a restaurant” and complained about having to box the steak but ultimately did after some being disgruntled about the situation.

We paid for our meal on the app and on the way out of the door, the owner was overheard talking about my wife and said she was “bitching” about her food to his employees who were also standing by the door.

We made mention of not coming back after overhearing their conversation and left without trying to make the situation worse. As I said I am not one to do reviews but take this as you wish. This establishment has had issues with hours, staff and staying afloat asa venue and a restaurant. As for a customer, we won’t be going back at all due to quality of “service” we had this evening with the owner.

It was my first time going. I heard great things about it, so we finally checked It out. So glad we did. I loved the atmosphere, love the set-up, the food was very delicious, and great customer service from beginning to end . This will definitely be a regular place for us to come and enjoy.

Had poor cell phone service , so you could not scan the menu and the staff. What’s so lazy? Are so above trying to take your order. The old-fashioned way with pen and paper.
Incredibly rude. Think it was actually a manager short older lady, as our party of 6 was leaving, another table was walking out as well.
Went there a couple of years ago? Could have not got any better when there. This time around, and I don’t know. How it would have gotten any worse

It’s a beautiful and cozy place! The cocktails (old fashion, espresso martini) were delicious, and the salmon was cooked perfect with excellent flavor. The bartender was very attentive. Lovely night out.

A bad experience; I won’t return. I waited in line for 55 minutes before placing my order and observed many people leave because the line wasn’t moving. Flys were buzzing all over kitchen and eating area, and I wasn’t sure I should have eaten here. No child high chairs available at all. It was extremely noisy inside. Workers didn’t appear to be in a good mood, looked frustrated, and the order taker wasn’t efficient. Now the food review; pull pork and red eye grits tasted great and serving sizes were good, but that was it. Really oversalted fries, and the mac and cheese wasn’t our cup of tea. We sampled a few our friends sides and those all tasted pretty mediocre.
