I was starving on my way home from a long shift, right before 9pm on a Sunday through Lowell.
Everyone was already closed, or had their kitchen closed, but this restaurant!!
They were super sweet and hospitable, even though I was there right at close, and the food was delicious!!!
Great food, fair prices and experienced staff. The building is a newly renovated historical building. The interior is clean and attractive.
During the summer you can sit on the decking that hangs from the outside of the restaurant over the Flat River and watch the ducks, fish and summer concerts on the Lowell showboat. You really want to check this place out!
For our first visit we came on a wednesday evening. They were not busy. The decor is beautiful with hand painted wall murals. Our server was very nice and prompt to take our order. The freshly made chips and salsa were brought out immediately. They have the best salsa, fresh and mild. I was happy to see the menu had some new specialty dishes to try and all the classic dishes you would expect (enchilladas, burritos, fajitas, etc.). We ordered the Pollo Pina (chicken breast topped with pinapple and cheese sauce), Burrito Loco (big burrito with steak, chicken, and shrimp fajitas and grilled peppers and onion) and I ordered my favorite the Tilapia big mix plate (grilled tilapia with sprimp and scallops). The food came out in no time at all. Everything was delicious!
The second visit we came on a Saturday during their busy lunch rush. I called ahead since we had a big party and they had a table waiting for us. Even though it was busy, our server was friendly, quick and attentive. Our orders came out fast and hot. We ordered the enchiladas plate and the Texas style Fajitas double platter (a huge sizzling hot portion of beef, chicken, and shrimp with two plates of rice beans and salad enough to feed 3 – 4 people). We topped it off with a plate of warm Churros covered in whipped cream and chocolate syrup. So delicious!!
I’m originally from Texas so I have high standards for Mexican food. Los Portales did not disappoint. It’s now one of my new favorite resturants. I love the food, the decor, and the service is top notch. You won’t be disappointed. I can’t wait to go in the spring when the patio over looking the river will be nice to sit and sip margaritas.
