It may have been the last thing we expected to find in the middle of the UP, but we’re so glad we stumbled into Manistique and to the Taj Taste of India!

Restaurant is now closed, there was a sign posted about the owner catering at an unknown location through the next couple of seasons till they open a new restaurant in a new “mystery” location.

As someone who was momentarily involved with the opening of the restaurant and knowing the owner I can say a few things here. A very nice family was helping the owner start the business and get it up and running but then the owner turned on them and is now having some conflict with them. I won’t divulge more than that as that’s legal business but does show his character and maybe why his business was not up to par.

I know that starting out the owner had a vendors license which is why the owner had to cook in a tent out back and could only use frozen foods. I believe at some point the owner had mostly moved to preparing things in the back of the restaurant although I’m quite certain that the owner still retained a vendors license. The owner mostly cooked in slow cookers, rice cookers, and, the like though with electric burners for the frying. I can also say that others helping the business had witnessed the owner portion rice with his bare hands which is….interesting.

I could never personally eat the food as I have dietary restrictions but from others close to me going there and seeing the food myself I can definitely say it was not traditional Indian cuisine nor very good. Mostly soggy with below average tastes, probably due to the frozen food used instead of fresh ingredients.

The waits for food were long and food was sometimes missing. There were Up charges for items you may not have been told were up charges. The food was served in styrofoam containers so definitely not a dine in kind of place, aimed more for take out.

Overall, the restaurant lasted part of spring and through the summer with many bad reviews and gossip. Food was below average, waits were long, missing food with surprising up charges, take out aimed, and well, not the best things happening behind the scenes. Not glad the restaurant moved in, glad it’s gone.

It may have been the last thing we expected to find in the middle of the UP, but we’re so glad we stumbled into Manistique and to the Taj Taste of India! We were greeted warmly, provided friendly recommendations and explanations, and delivered delectable goods including: soup, naan, and two separate entrees of chickpea and chicken. We loved the unique and fragrant flavors, as well as the variety of spices available. We’re putting this on the map to ensure we come back next time we’re in the UP! Worth the trek!

If you’re an Indian then just RUN away, we didn’t find any “Taste of India” here. If you’re a non Indian then don’t judge the Indian food by it whether you like it or not. You’ll be in for a surprise when you actually get a chance to taste the real Indian food. Sadly this is the only Indian(so called) restaurant in entire Upper Peninsula.

Don’t let them take your order for you, fill out the order form. In my experience the guy offered up-charges without making it clear they were up-charges. The food I got didn’t have what it was supposed to. For instance, I got the meals which were supposed to come with Naan. He upcharged me for garlic naan, but then didn’t also give the naan which was supposed to come with the meal. The saag paneer didn’t seem to have paneer in it.

If this place was your first experience with Indian food, you might come away from it thinking you don’t like Indian food, because the flavor was off. This is a shame because Indian food is great!

We had a really delicious meal, we ordered takeout at Raj. The mains and side dishes were so good! We’re also happy they have really good vegetarian options for some of our family and friends. We highly recommend this place.

Really enjoyed this nice new addition to Manistique! Good food with huge portions. The owner is soooo kind and friendly. Took my parents who had never had Indian food before here and they enjoyed it! Will be back for sure!

Food took over 2 hours to come out, and when it did it was lukewarm at best. His hands looked like he had been scooping mud when he brought it to us finally lmao. They literally got into an argument with me on a random Instagram video over something not even food related. Strange way to build a positive brand name. First time I’ve been to restaurant and instantly decided to never come back

The food is ok. But served in to go styrofoam containers. So it’s really geared towards take out. I wouldn’t recommend it for date night

Ordered our food an hour ahead and still was 40 minutes late. And to top it off the food was not good. I do not recommend this place.
