I recently stopped by Royal Taj in Southern Pines while driving through a nearby town. This place caught my eye on the Find Me Gluten Free app, and I’m already planning my next visit.

From start to finish, everything we ordered was fresh, fragrant, and thoughtfully seasoned. The Onion Pakoda was just divine and an unexpected available GF option. It was interesting, easy to share with zero of the onion petal pull apart difficulties, or stodgy oversaturated greasy mess that are typical with our more common onion fried appetizers here in America. It was everything a blooming onion should strive to be.

My other had the Garlic Naan and it appeared to be pillowy soft, flecked with a reasonable amount of garlic and butter without being overpowering—perfect for sopping up the Goat Korma.

The Paneer Biryani struck a lovely balance of perfectly cooked rice, cubes of paneer, and just enough warmth from the whole spices.

Prices are extremely reasonable, too, especially for the quality and portion sizes.

Our server, James, was a highlight of the evening—friendly, attentive, intelligent and quick to answer questions and gave spot-on recommendations. As someone with celiac disease, I greatly appreciated the clear options given to us by our knowledgable server James—no guessing, no hoping, no research on my end, no stress.

The dining room itself was clean, comfortable and well decorated, though I’m not one to seek out fine décor or upscale venues. The atmosphere was well beyond my personal requirements; My only expectations are sanitary and somewhat tidy. The dinnerware and cutlery don’t even need to match!

I’ll definitely go back, and next time I’m trying those dosas!

A note on accessibility:

If mobility isn’t a concern for you, you’re all set and no need to read further—this is a great spot worth a stop. Don’t think twice, just go have an exceptional culinary experience.

For wheelchair users and those with limited mobility and strength (contrary to popular belief we do not all have amazing upper body strength), the biggest hurdle isn’t the restaurant itself but the Days Inn parking lot and building it shares. Automatic main entrance doors would be ideal. The ramps by the handicap spaces at the entrance are far too steep for me to self propel and at an angle and pitch, perfect for losing control and being luged right into the driving area of the parking lot. It wasn’t busy during our visit, but has the potential to be dangerous if so. The ramp is made of rough, uneven asphalt, and is easily be blocked by your own vehicle parked which poses a huge challenge for yourself and makes others unable to access it as well. I don’t remember seeing any spots with loading zones to accommodate ramps or allow adequate space between other parked cars, but I probably didn’t pay close enough attention. I feel like the parking lot is adequately sized to add this addition.

The concrete wheel stops sit too close together, forcing you to navigate behind and around cars to reach the ramp—far from ideal if you’re hard to see at wheelchair height.

Inside, the bathroom door was too narrow to squeeze through in my chair (and I’m close to pediatric sized). None of these issues ruined the meal—I had help—but they’re worth knowing especially if you’re planning a visit alone. If you’re staying in the area, you might consider takeout or delivery instead.

Accessibility issues in older buildings are somewhat expected and it isn’t worthy of any missing marks on my opinion or review of the restaurant. I was previously responsible for adding or confirming amenities and features on platforms like Google maps long ago, so I tend to be a bit more observational on these matters than most people need. However, I value this type of heads-up so I can make decisions and wanted to provide the same for someone else.

The food was genuinely good, but I was disappointed with the protein portions. I ordered the Chicken Korma and Chicken Tikka, and while the flavors were good, the amount of chicken in each dish felt pretty sparse. For nearly $20, I expected a more generous serving of protein. I’d love to keep coming back because the taste is there, but improving portion sizes would make the experience feel much more worth the price. There are other restaurants nearby that cover both quantity and quality.

Update: The owner or representative contacted us and apologized for the meal mixup and explained their normal chef was out of town. They kindly offered to recook the meals for us sometime, which was very kind. We have not tried it again at this time but it was very kind of them to reach out.

Ordered take out— people were very nice and ordering process easy but they didn’t get the order correct. Either that or their lamb korma is not creamy at all. Mild spice is still very spicy so my daughter who loves lamb curry had a difficult time. And because we didn’t get the creamy korma, I couldn’t offer that to her. The curries were very oily and the naan bread was rubbery so hard to pull apart and chew. Flavors of curry were good except spice level and excessive oil. Not a bad option but I probably would order from elsewhere next time

My wife and I had lunch at the Royal Taj today, and we were both delighted. She had the buttered lamb with rice, and I had the lamb biryani, with samosas and garlic naan. The atmosphere is distinctly upscale (see photos below). NB: it is easy to miss the turnoff from Morganton Rd, so watch for the sign. The service by “Adara” was prompt and quite knowledgeable. We took home about half of the food! This restaurant is a gem. We will return soon.

First off don’t let the location deter you! It’s inside a Day’s Inn. The food was AMAZING!!!! The waiter James was very nice and helpful with the food recommendations! The flavor was like I said before AMAZING! I got spicy and it had a kick!

We were traveling and saw the google reviews and decided to go 30 minutes off course and it was definitely worth it!

Can’t recommend enough! Will be back next time I’m traveling in the area!

We got the samosa chaat and pakora to share, amazing! So much flavor! Oh and we tried the butter naan, garlic naan, and garlic cheese, my fav was the garlic cheese naan but all were great! I got the chicken tikki masala and probably the best chicken Tikki masala i have ever had!

Best photo I can share really just shows how great it was!

As someone who has never had a good experience with indian food, I was truly blown away by this place! A little hard to find, but totally worth it. The staff is so friendly and helpful on helping guide you on what you would like. I am truly one of the pickiest eaters, and this place has become one of my top choices in moore county now! Awesome atmosphere as well. 10/10 recommend!! Support local businesses!!

Royal Taj is a hidden gem in Southern Pines! The Crispy Fries are perfectly seasoned and addictively crunchy. The Gobi Manchurian delivers sweet, tangy Indo-Chinese flavor in every bite—crispy cauliflower done right. And the Lamb Tikka? Tender, smoky, and packed with spice. The food is always fresh, portions are generous, and the staff treats you like royalty. Easily one of my favorite spots in town!

Kadai Chicken and Chettinad Chicken were lacking in interesting flavor and mostly sauce and chicken. Medium is super spicy so keep that in mind. We only ate about 20%. Chicken was dried out. The Dosa looked wonderful but sadly I wasn’t in a try something different mood. Next time that’s definitely what I’ll go for. Nan, Somosa Chat and Pakora were all fresh and tasty. I would avoid the spicy dishes, not because of spice but because they lack interesting flavor. Service was excellent and I love the atmosphere, despite the fact that its in a motel. A little pricy for the location.
